OU Stadium Renovations to be on Board of Regents Agenda Next Week.
by Ryan Aber
Renovations to Oklahoma Memorial Stadium are on the agenda for the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents meeting that begins Monday in Ardmore, according to the preliminary agenda posted Thursday.
While no specifics are listed on the agenda—including anticipated cost—the posting says “certain significant student athlete, team, operation and stadium improvement projects have been identified that will combine new state of the art features and elements to create an enhanced experience for OU’s athletic teams, students, student-athletes, alumni, fans, and visitors.”
Renovations aren’t expected to stretch the capacity of the stadium much beyond its current capacity of 82,112. The plan is likely to include new suites on the stadium’s west side, a new press box and additional chairback seating.
The board will be asked to include the stadium master plan updates on the Campus Master Plan of Capital Improvements Projects, approve the “further development of projects consistent” with the stadium master plan process and authorize the administration to negotiate terms of an agreement for architectural services with the Kansas City firm that developed the plan, Populous, Inc. The specific projects will require additional approval by the board.
Also, space in the north end zone will be renovated to be utilized for academic reasons by the school.
The board will likely be asked in its September meeting to approve a recommendation for a construction management firm.
The agenda says “funding for architectural services and further project development have been identified are are available” from athletic department funds.
The meeting begins at 3:30 p.m. Monday and will be continued at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Other items on the agenda that involve athletics:
- Authorization of a contract for charter air travel for the football team for the 2014 season with the option to renew for four more one-year periods.
The football team will travel by air to four away games this season.
The four-person evaluation committee—three from the athletic department— recommends the board select the bid by United Airlines. United’s bid wasn’t the lowest of the six submitted but based on the reliability of the carrier, the committee chose United.
United bid $469,706 for the service. Other bids that met the aircraft size requirements were for $331,500 and $383,370. The other three bids were for aircraft that did not meet the minimum seating requirements for the team.
- Annual review of compensation and contracts of Athletic Director Joe Castiglione and coaches in all sports, including Bob Stoops and his assistants.
- Security services for athletic venues. Security personnel costs for the upcoming fiscal year are anticipated to be $900,000.
