Brady Manek

I have cautious optimism with both Manek and Young but especially Manek for this year. They are both frosh but Manek played small high school basketball and I just think at some point he's going to hit a wall. Maybe not, maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am but I like what I've seen so far. I just don't want to put too heavy of expectations on him.

Reeves at OSU, Roberts at OSU, and Minor at OU were all small school basketball players and had excellent freshman seasons (Minor didn't play much at first but exploded on the scene late in the year; probably should have played more). So, it's not out of the realm of possibility that both have great seasons but I'm just not expecting it. :oldwt356:

Harrah is 4A and they played 5A and I think 6A schools the past couple of years. Nothing like Minor and Reeves playing Class B (Harmon I believe did play in the TOC when the Minor brothers were there, but they weren't playing any of the "big" schools by them). And didn't Mabel play AAU?

I believe he did play AAU against some elite talent, no?

I think if he would have been an out of state player OU fans would have loved him. Instead we were all focused on Trae. We all are fired up by our 2018 commit who averaged 7 ppg in EYBL while Manek avereged over 13 ppg in the same league.

TBH I was impressed with the entire team. But I'm tempering my emotions because it was a foreign trip and I don't want to set expectations too high. This team looks like they could be very good.

I agree with this. The team looks like it has depth and talent, yet I tend to temper my win-loss expectations for the upcoming season since the best players on the team are underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores).

Don't get me wrong, as I think the 2017-18 season will be loads of fun to watch, but this team still has a lot of growing up to do. So many basketball games come down to experience, effort and execution in the last 2 minutes. To have a super season, a team must win the close games.

I think 2017-18 will be a fun season, while 2018-19 could be a super season.

Regarding Brady Manek, I think he was a 4-Star rated national recruit. If so, he was not overlooked on the national scene.

I have seen quotes from both players and Coach K that a big weakness last year was performance in the last part of games. I think Kruger is well aware of that and will stress performance at the end of games. That and the effect of good defense in the championship game will be an emphasis I hope. I think our offense has the skills to compete. It's the defense in the last few minutes that will win the games.

OK...i wasn't aware Harrah is now 4A. When I was in high school we had wrestling tournaments at Harrah and it was 2A or maybe 3A.

To me, 4A still isn't that big though. That's the same size as my old high school Chickasha. The talent differential in 4A night in and night out is not the same as 6A in Oklahoma and definitely not the same as 6A in states with larger populations. But, you are right 4A is much different than Gans and Hammon which are very small towns with small high schools.

Not sure who is "Mabel"? Did you mean Chianti Roberts?

He committed early and was skinny but LK offered him very early believing he was a good talent. The kid is athletic which can be surprising because of skin color. He also knows how to play the game.

He is the starter at this moment and has a realistic chance to keep it. The staff absolutely loves him. He is only going to get bigger and stronger which will really help him.

A quick check of Harrah's schedule the last couple years shows they played Tulsa Union and Midwest City as well as the top 3 teams in 5A last year Tulsa Memorial, Carl Albert and El Reno.

Over Doolittle?

Manek was autocorrected to Mabel...LOL.

Yes, 4A isn't as good as 6A overall.

FWIW, unless something changed recently, Chickasha has been 5A for decades.

Yes. Doolittle played the least minutes of anybody on the trip. He certainly can earn his time and starting position back but right now he isn't.

Unreal. I just saw your post in the other thread about the doghouse. Seeing Doolittle's attitude last year it's really hard to fathom(he has a good attitude, I thought). How in the world after performing so well as a freshman could you get in the doghouse? It's just been the offseason? Hope he can get it turned around. Is it because he's been outperformed by Manek?

I just assumed it was because there were reports that Doolittle was hurt in the off season? That's why I figured his minutes were low because they are exhibition games so why should he, an established starter and Big 12 performer from a year ago, push it too hard for meaningless games?

I understand but VBDAD is saying he's in the doghouse. Injury does not equal doghouse.

2 years ago they were pushed back to 4A. Now they are in the same district as Newcastle, Elk City, Elgin (I think), Clinton, and Weatherford.

When I played (late 80's) we were 4A before they added a 6A. Then we moved to 5A (with the addition of 6A) but were always the smallest 5A school by a good margin. Our district then was Duncan, Ardmore, Altus, Lawton Mac, and the OKC schools, all of which were much bigger (student wise) than Chickasha. Though the OKC schools (Capital Hill, US Grant, Southeast, Star Spencer, Douglass) didn't have as many players on their football teams (I was going to use athletes but the OKC schools had athletes).

For some players on the roster, the amount of playing time garnered will be a function of the score and the foul situation.

Okay, knew if Chickasha was 4A it was recent. When I was high school in the early 90s to mid 90s, we were the smallest school in 5A (Woodward). Woodward has been going back and forth between 4A and 5A the past 18 years (Chickasha went down and Woodward went back up in the last round of realignments...LOL).

Both are heavily affected by the oil/gas industry. However, with the boom of the last 10 years, Chickasha didn't see the rise in population like it did in the early 80's. I've been told all the oilfield workers this time around live(d) in travel trailers. Maybe Woodward had more workers put roots down or something...

I always thought Woodward was bigger than Chickasha. When I drove thru it a few years ago I was convinced it's bigger.
