Buddy on Sportscenter

"It's marked on the calendar" - Buddy on the Kansas game in Norman.

I loved that he said we have to take care of the games before the KU game, but that the rematch was marked on the calendar. Buddy (and his teammates) are all business about winning that Big 12 title.

When asked what his favorite game was he said "Our 18 wins."

Here's a pretty accurate transcript for those who missed it:

SVP: There is nobody in America--in college basketball--that is playing any better than the man who joins us now, Buddy Hield from Oklahoma. And Buddy, thanks first of all for taking the time.

You play with a smile on your face, and there's so much joy -- where does that come from, man?

BH: It comes from my back-home habits, comes from my mom, and always keeping a smile on our face when we were little. And just being around a bunch of fun people.

SVP: When's the last time you were nervous on the court, man? Because it seems to me the bigger the moment, the better you play.

BH: I can't remember the last time, but it's just been fun, being on the court, never having a dull moment, being nervous, because you can enjoy every bit of it because I only have four years of it in college, so I've just got to enjoy them, all of it.

SVP: Is there one performance, one game thus far that stands out above all the others? Because you've had so many great ones, but so far, what is it?

BH: Probably all the wins, the 18 wins that me and my teammates share so far. Just winning and competing in the Big 12 night in, night out has been special.

SVP: You came on SportsCenter with us after the Phog Allen performance. You got a standing ovation from the people that stayed. And then the other day against LSU, I mean, you're out of your mind in that one. Am I wrong? Is one of those moments at least a little bit more memorable than the others?

BH: Sharing those victories with my teammates -- especially because it's my last year of college, my senior year, so just being around my teammates and enjoying and soaking up the last couple of games I have with them has been fun, so I'm enjoying every bit of it.

SVP: How much attention do you pay to, like, draft boards and projections where people say you're going to go?

BH: I never do. I can't worry about that. I just gotta handle my work on the court and it'll all handle itself afterwards.

SVP: What I'm getting at is why you chose to stay. Because you could have left, but you came back and as a college basketball fan, I thank you for doing that, because I get to enjoy you again in college, but I'm just curious what you thought you had to work on.

BH: Just work on being more efficient, taking smart shots. Being a better leader for my teammates, polishing my game all around, so if I was able to play in the NBA one day, I can be ready.

SVP: I wrote down "2/13." February 13th. You know what happens on February 13th?

BH: We play Kansas?

SVP: Uh huh. How much do you look forward to that game, given how good the last one was in Phog Allen?

BH: It's marked on the calendar. But we've got to take care of these games before the Kansas game. We can't worry about that. But it's marked.

SVP: What do you have to do to say, "I'm glad I came back to Norman for my final year"?

BH: When making my decision, I just trusted my mom, trusted God, and I really trusted myself, and I trusted myself that I would get better, because I put in a lot of work. So once I put in a lot of work, nobody can take that away from me, so I just trusted my work ethic that I put in, and I just moved on from that.

SVP: Well, all the work shows every time you go out there, Buddy, because you're playing at an incredibly high level, and whether it's the LSU game that you won or the Kansas game that you didn't, anybody that loves the sport -- and I do -- gets a great deal of joy out of watching you play with that smile on your face, and I appreciate you taking a little bit of time to visit with me. I wish you well the remainder of this season. Enjoy that last year in Norman, y'hear?

BH: Yes sir. Hey, one more thing: I gotta make a shout-out to everybody in the Bahamas. They're always watching back home, so I gotta make sure I (represent for) the Bahamas.

SVP: Everybody in the Bahamas, Buddy has love for you. And they've got love for you too, I'm sure, Buddy. Be good, all right? You take it easy.

BH: Thank you so much. You too.

Wow. Did you put that together Skyvue? If that's not word for word correct it's darn close.

I did it, yes. I'm a pretty quick transcriber (have done a few interviews over the years).

Thank you, SV! Great read for somebody that missed his appearance like I did.

Thanks, but you're giving me too much credit. I didn't transcribe it live -- well sort of, but I relied on my DVR's buffer. I'm no court reporter, able to type up a conversation as it happens.

Me too!

In his day, Waymon lit up the LNC with his bright personality and his wonderful game. Today, Buddy is doing much the same, in his own way.

Re: Buddy Hield interview with Scott Van Pelt

As a HS kid, Hollis Price was my favorite, but Buddy may be pulling ahead very soon.

Impressive transcript.
As Lon has said, Buddy's contributions at OU will last a long time.

Price was the same way...big smile and ice in his veins.

It's like last night...you can be a d-bag like Gathers and take cheap shots, be all blown up....or play with a smile and really frustrate your opponent. Like Buddy...

focus and intensity can be either way.

My pleasure. I figured the video would probably get posted somewhere, but I didn't know how soon.
