California

Vivi's playing lately leaves a lot to be desired.
On balance TT is a liability.
Our defense wont win many games , but the lack of will lose several. It has never been a priority with Sherri.

I stopped watching after the 3rd quarter, so while most of you have the benefit of seeing us finally wake up in the 4th quarter, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. Those first 3 quarters were PAINFUL.

Several times already this season, I have heard Coach Coale praise OU's ability to "not be rattled" whenever the opposing team goes on a run, we have a poor start, etc. But how often does that have to happen? Why do we have to keep digging ourselves out of holes or let teams go on insane runs? Shouldn't experience be an asset of this team at this point?

Maybe part of it has to do with personnel. It takes us too long to find the lineup that matches up best with our opponent. Maybe it's the coaching staff's fault, or maybe it's just a matter of a group of 5 girls deciding to lock in, I'm not sure. We were substituting RAPIDLY in the first half, hoping something would click, and each group of 5 was just as rattled as the last.

In the first half, it felt like someone decided to put the team on their shoulders but that just resulted in an out-of-control drive to the basket leading to a turnover or an airball. The only person who wasn't attempting to lead the team offensively was Maddie. Yes, we needed Maddie on the floor and she was doing things defensively, but we needed her to step up and make baskets and stop the bleeding. Again, I didn't watch the 4th quarter, and it sounds like she finally starting shooting with conviction and led us back in the game. But WHY did he take her 30 minutes to do that? We need her always. As everyone knows -- as Maddie goes, we go. When the defense has to honor Maddie, it also almost always allows Peyton more room to score, as well.

We also kept trying to force the ball inside to Vivi in the first half, which is normally a great strategy for us, but man, Vivi simply could not assert herself against Anigwe (who, to be fair, is elite).

I feel for Gioya. She's a good kid and I can't imagine the pressure she feels. But she simply did very very few positive things last night. I want nothing more for things to start clicking for her again, but maybe she'd be able to be more effective if she could watch the game from the bench for a few minutes before entering.

I don't even whoever kept track of the stats last night. Crediting turnovers was nearly an impossible task. There were SO MANY so fast.

I would agree that it would be beneficial if Maddie were to come out firing. That really wasn't the original intent when we recruited her. She was, supposedly, a tall point. But, when Maddie does get off to a strong start, we usually win, even if she quiets down.

I don't exactly know what Sherri is doing right now. From earlier comments, I thought Morgan Rich would be on the floor already. Wonder if she passed or has an injury? But, I think it has become obvious that there is no solution to any question that involves Gioya. She might be a sixth man if she would take decent shots. She can't dribble, pass, or play defense. Is she any better than she was as a freshman?

I think the past few games have singled Peyton and Maddie out. They can be effective with different styles. But, Vivi and EJ must learn when they can go to the rim, and when they can't. Vivi can't play point guard, and she lost it every time she put it on the floor. If there is no shot, there should be someone open. Get it back out in a hurry. Don't spend any time trying to find a way to the rim. You are either there, or you aren't. Keep the ball moving. Maddie, Peyton, and Gabbi are pretty good at ten to fifteen feet. If we have to score inside, do it with Nancy. Let Vivi play defense and rebound. Take the shot only if it is there.

I think we are watching a Peyton-Maddie-Chelsea-Gabbi unit emerge. TT and LaNesia have their moments in an open floor. I'd rather use Penzo than Gioya unless Gioya begins to make sense. EJ, Vivi, and Nancy can rotate, depending on need. Nancy is beginning to separate herself as someone they can't stop. She just has difficulty rebounding. Derica isn't doing much right, but she also isn't doing much wrong.

Right now, Gioya would have to show me that she is a senior to get back on the floor. I think we have ten doing better than she is.

S.C. was trying to get Anigwe in foul trouble..which did not work..Cali had the better talent and coaching at least in that game was about the same..so talent wins out

Is she any better than she was as a freshman?

I think this is a valid question for the direction of the program as a whole. The coaching staff used to consistently produce players that showed SIGNIFICANT improvement all the time. The group of Abi, Amanda, and Nyeshia all finished way better than they started. Ashley Paris' growth was tremendous. But, alarmingly, Joanna Macfarland and Sharane are the only people I can think of in the past 5 years whose skills, effort, stats, and maturity improved significantly from freshman to senior year.

There's been certain areas of slight improvement, sure. For example, Derica is a better shooter now than she was as a freshman, but her minutes are now down to freshman Derica minutes, for whatever reason, so she isn't able to have improved contributions. T'Ona has improved her shooting (slowly) and ability to use her speed over the years, but her decision making and ability to find teammates is still freshman-level baffling most of the time.

Just food for thought.

In my opinion, Anigwe is one of the top three post players in the country (along with A'ja Wilson and Alaina Coates). They are all light years ahead of Brianna Turner. Vivi looked absolutely awful against her all night. She's too unathletic to match up with the likes of Anigwe. I felt EJ did the best of all the post players, but she's still raw. Nancy had some good moments.

This team struggled a bunch, but we have to trust the process. Sherri Coale knows what she's doing, right? None of us have the knowledge and experience that SC does. I agree that Gioya played terribly, but clearly she's doing something right for :sherri175_jpg_xs: to continue playing her. She did make two consecutive stops on the defensive end after her two turnovers.

Give it some time. They will be on fire when Big 12 play begins. :)

Ortiz is a little out of control at times... she really took an ill advised 3 I think when we were down by 2 points, and picking up that T at the end didn't help...

I noticed Sherri was claim, cool, and collected all the way to the end. We have a pretty laid back coaching staff and the players have seem to take on that personality... I still think Manning will remain the 6th person, she seems to have been playing well, and maybe its because shes coming in off the bench.
