I stopped watching after the 3rd quarter, so while most of you have the benefit of seeing us finally wake up in the 4th quarter, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. Those first 3 quarters were PAINFUL.
Several times already this season, I have heard Coach Coale praise OU's ability to "not be rattled" whenever the opposing team goes on a run, we have a poor start, etc. But how often does that have to happen? Why do we have to keep digging ourselves out of holes or let teams go on insane runs? Shouldn't experience be an asset of this team at this point?
Maybe part of it has to do with personnel. It takes us too long to find the lineup that matches up best with our opponent. Maybe it's the coaching staff's fault, or maybe it's just a matter of a group of 5 girls deciding to lock in, I'm not sure. We were substituting RAPIDLY in the first half, hoping something would click, and each group of 5 was just as rattled as the last.
In the first half, it felt like someone decided to put the team on their shoulders but that just resulted in an out-of-control drive to the basket leading to a turnover or an airball. The only person who wasn't attempting to lead the team offensively was Maddie. Yes, we needed Maddie on the floor and she was doing things defensively, but we needed her to step up and make baskets and stop the bleeding. Again, I didn't watch the 4th quarter, and it sounds like she finally starting shooting with conviction and led us back in the game. But WHY did he take her 30 minutes to do that? We need her always. As everyone knows -- as Maddie goes, we go. When the defense has to honor Maddie, it also almost always allows Peyton more room to score, as well.
We also kept trying to force the ball inside to Vivi in the first half, which is normally a great strategy for us, but man, Vivi simply could not assert herself against Anigwe (who, to be fair, is elite).
I feel for Gioya. She's a good kid and I can't imagine the pressure she feels. But she simply did very very few positive things last night. I want nothing more for things to start clicking for her again, but maybe she'd be able to be more effective if she could watch the game from the bench for a few minutes before entering.
I don't even whoever kept track of the stats last night. Crediting turnovers was nearly an impossible task. There were SO MANY so fast.
