Capel and recruting ability.

okc I don't totally disagree with you and that is part of the major problem with college basketball. The real issue, to me, is the fact that AAU coaches don't spend nearly enough time with players in the environments that are the most important in college....the CLASSROOM being one of the main ones. AAU coaches are with players part time....that is like one of your bosses being from a temp agency and doing your evaluation and selling you to the next company you are going to. They would know SOME of your strong points and weaknesses but not enough....and AAU guys are often in it for themselves and NOT the player.

But it is what it is. You are right about that...but I am actually glad Capel and AAU might be distancing themselves from guys like that.....the Tiny situation is a glaring example of what AAU-type guys can get you.

Of course this is all my opinion and means absolutely nothing.

Well, what HAS he done without Blake?

Other than post a losing record.

I was referring to the OP's insinuation that landing WW, TMG and Tiny was all due to Blake Griffin. I really think that's a stretch. This is one of those arguments that is silly because it is impossible to prove/disprove. How can we prove it to be true or false either way?

Everyone knows WW was a huge key in getting TMG and Tiny. See below, straight from WW about why he came to Oklahoma. Why is it so far stretched to say BG would not go to OU if Taylor was not there. *How hard was it for Capel to convince BG to stay in state with his brother?

Face it, Capels success early was nothing more than right place right time. Any poster on this board could have convinced BG to play with his brother.

"Blake Griffin was one of the main things that made me want to go to Oklahoma," five-star guard Willie Warren said. "I told coach Oronde Taliaferro that I wanted to play with a big man.

The fact that Oklahoma has picked up one of the top players in the country is surely a shock to some but for Oklahoma's burgeoning recruiting star, Taliaferro, it was nothing short of a sure thing from the day he took the job according to Warren.

"I told him when he left Arkansas, my words to him were that I was going to follow him wherever he goes," he said. "He was kind of leaning to Miami for a while which I wasn't real happy about, that was a little too far for me.

One reminder for me about the type of recruiter Jeff Capel is was when Terrance Jones was announcing his decision and he went through the reasons he liked each of his final schools. For Kentucky, Washington and the other schools he mentioned things like their tradition or their facilities. For OU he only mentioned Jeff Capel and his relationship with Capel.

This seems to be common theme for recruits. The ONLY reason some of them give as to why they are interested in OU is their relationship with Jeff Capel.

If we lose that, we could really be screwed.

I'm confused, did we sign Terrence Jones?

Oh, no we didn't. So, in the end, it wouldn't have mattered if Jeff Capel was coaching our team or Casta Thomas (old Chickasha bball coach). He didn't sign the stud. But, I'm sure he's still sending him text messages of encouragement, though.

Is this how far we have fallen as OU basketball fans? We want to keep a losing coach because he almost signs highly ranked recruits?

The question I have is, who did we miss out on that could help us but we were instead recruiting Terrence Jones, or Harrison Barnes, or Jai Lucas, etc.

Just like when John Blake wasted all that time on the QB who signed with aTm on signing day then went to MLB. We ended up signing John Columbus or whatever his name was and he never played one single down at QB. He did play about 5 downs in 4 years as a DB, though.

I guess those guys like both Jeff and Jay Z but not enough to come and play for either. What good does it do to come in 2nd place for a recruit.

If we lose what? A coach that develops relationships with highly ranked recruits but can't get them to sign on the dotted line?

Guess what, neither of the previous 3 coaches were great at getting big name recruits, but they still signed good players that won games, won conference championships, won conference tournaments, won NCAA games, advanced to the Sweet 16, advanced to the Final 4, etc.

I don't get how you can say "we may be screwed" if we lose Capel? I think we are screwed right now. In fact, this quote from Christmas Vacation immediately comes to mind:

"Worse? How can it get any worse? Take a look around you Ellen - we're at the threshold of Hell!"

So for me clapping on what some one else has to say you attack me, interesting. The difference here is that was John Blake and over 12 years, catch the over. Was it John Connor? And how many players switch postions in football. Comparing football to basketball is like comparing apples to oranges, yeah they both are round, but they aren't the same.

Once again thank you, Jai Lucas wasn't part of the 2010 class or even transfering last year, so fail on that part.

The only reason OU had a shot at those kids were because Capel worked on it and bulit a realationship with the kids. If you are thinking Sampson would have had a shot in hell at these kids you are wrong.

Really bring up sending encouraging text messages to kids that you have grown a realationship with, you bash him on that, wow. Just because he didn't come to OU doesn't mean you act like you don't know the kid. That shows Capel cares about players he interacts with, it shows class, and shows other recruits that he will have you back when your down and everyone is against you. Who cares who he texts that his business not mine. I know if some one I know is not happy or feeling down, or something bad has happen to them. I am right there sending an encouraging message to them and also checking up on them.

A losing coach? He has one losing season and those other years when he was winning doesn't count? Epic fail.

Please, please get facts right when you bring them to the table. It' sad, when I, who am rebutting you has to correct you facts. Also take a lesson from Capel about class and don't attack some one for clapping about what another poster had to say.

I never said Lucas was part of the 2010 class. I was listing burger boys that Capel placed all his eggs in one basket to recruit and when we didn't sign the player we were left with table scraps. John Roberson is a player we could have signed instead of wasting time on Lucas and I'm pretty sure he'd be a big upgrade over what we have now at PG.

Capel is about to have his 2nd losing season this year, and if he comes back next year will be his 3rd.

So, do we get some type of consolation prize because Capel had a shot to sign them? What do we get? A set of steak knives? Members of the jelly of the month club? Oh, we get nothing? So, you mean having a shot at them and not getting them is the same thing? I get it now.

Sampson recruited highly ranked prospects and came very close to signing them. I can remember a kid out of Missouri, John something, white boy, who chose Mizzou over OU as his final choice. Hinrich chose KU over OU and loved Sampson during recruiting. Langford chose KU over OU and he liked Sampson, too. Kelvin recruited good prospects, but when he missed out he found guys like Nolan Johnson and Terrell Everett who came in and won games. Capel can't seem to do this.

As I've said a few days ago, I was fine with Sampson and his level of success. Advance to post season play every year, make the Final 4 every 10-15 years, sweet 16 every 3-5 years, 2nd or 3rd in conference with the occasional championship, I was fine with that. I wasn't one of the fans on this board complaining about Sampson or the job he was doing because I know the level he and Tubbs had our program at is about as high as it's going to get. I was fine with that. I'd rather have that than have a coach who gets us there 2 times out of 5 seasons and be the doormat of the conference.

I would never be satisfied with a coach who had no shot at winning a national championship.

We had a shot at winning it all in 02-03 if Quannas doesn't sprain his ankle. We only really had a shot at winning it all one year under Tubbs. And we've not yet really come close under Capel. We don't even have a shot at a winning record right now.

You talk about 2 guys from the 2010 class and one from the 2007 class. I am pretty sure he doesn't just recruit one or two players a class and place all his eggs in that basket. That's hybris to even say, but my thing is why not try for those kids. You want to have bring championships to a team you bring in the best players. Last year there was a lot of lies going on about the program at OU making kids question coming here. Also when you talk about some guy would you please take some time and look it up the name on the internet, its not that hard.

I guess you are fine with one and done games in the tourney that Sampson had. Maybe it's because his name is not Jeff Capel.

I didn't know the season end at the end of December. I thought this was bowl season not tourney time. Do you know where I can get the bracket so I can fill one out?:facepalm You are assuming that this year is lost and we are only 12 games in. It may be a rough year, but the season isn't over. Then you go on to say next year will be a losing season also, wow. I am glad you write off a season before it's even close to starting. Have a little faith in your team. SMH, don't come back and say you do have faith in the team and hope they do well, but it will be hard with lack of coaching because what you say contradicts that and I don't want to hear it.

I am not ever going to jump in boat with you about that OU basketball has reached its highest level it can. I believe that to be so wrong.

When is Capel actually going to start landing some top talent? Nobody remembers who finishes second for a recruit.

I think we need to start close to home. Try and get the best player in the state every year. Last year got one of the best in Neal and we'll see how that works out. I would have liked to have seen us get his teammate that went to TCU also. But if we had gotten a Rontei Clarke a few years back we would have a big time three point shooter right now.
