Capel on the Animal

Only caught the very tail end....

Anyone catch it? Could you give us a recap? Thanks.

Capel on the animal with Al interview

Here are some rapid fire notes on the interview

- Just got in Arkansas, about to do a shoot around.

- would do scheduling different due to amoutn of early games away from LNC. Not good for anytime, really bad for young team. Have to make the most of it.

- Good things about Maui

Played well in spurts (kentucky),

Need to focus and concentrate every possession.

Only Cade was shooting well.

Ill-advised shots, guys trying to do too much.

Perimeter defense wasn't bad, not great.

Put everything into Kentucky game,

Cade took an ill-advised shot vs Kentucky when down 6.

Our guys were sub consciously weren't ready to play again so quickly vs Virginia. Young team not ready for back to back.

Too much praise after Kentucky, some satisfaction after game.

"we didn't come here to be close, we came here to win"

Got to change mind set

Goff - very good, 6'9 225, very athletic, run, skill, positive impact on team. Defensive end, board, block shots. Run, run.

Not a very athletic team this year but addition of Osby and Goff changes things, more athletic.

Impossible to replace TMG and Tiny at such short notice. werent prepared to lose TMG and Tiny.

Hard to replace guys late, elite guys are gone. We had stop recruiting those spots due to Tommy alreayd being on roster.

Not easy as some may think

Re: Capel on the animal with Al interview

Those last few statements worry me. I think most of us thought it was pretty obvious my midseason we weren't going to have TMG back then the Tiny rumors came around right around that time and it looked like he might have been nearly kicked off the team because of the money he took. He was suspended for a couple of games right around the start of Big 12 play and there were rumors about him getting money all the rest of the year. I don't see how you can use that as an excuse if you are Jeff Capel.

Here is a recap.

Tough for a young team to play so many games on the road. 5 of next 8 on the road. Especially in Maui three games back to back. Thought the team played well in spurts, played well against UK, saw some good things but took a bad shot with 2 minutes left leading to a beak away basket after UK had not scored for a while. Did not play well against UVA, every one including him was too satisfied with their effort against UK. Perimiter defense was good overall, interior was not. Chaminade 4 man got career high. Trying to get team to realize they have to bring it every game. Working on getting the team to put together the good things for 40 minutes.

Really high on Goff. Wishes he had him right now. Instant impact player. Very athletic and can run. Could stop saying how much Goff can run. A guy they can throw the ball to in the post and make playes and draw fouls. Playes above the rim. Big jump next year with Goff and Osby.

Always knew Willie was going to go pro after soph year. Was not prepared to lose tiny and tmg. Stopped recruiting those positions because they though those two guys would be coming back. That really set the team back.

That was it, it was a really short interview. Team just walked into the Arkansas gym and was going to do some shooting to get acquainted with the gym.

Thanks for the recap fellas.

Nick,

I tend to agree. But in Capel's defense, it had to be next to impossible to recruit kids when Gary Parish is writing that your program is going to get the death penalty.

My bet is that we would have been able to get Aziz and Carter...maybe Poland too (Goff's teammate).

Carter sucks, when I saw him in the Juco championships in Hutchinson he didn't do anything to show he could play in the big 12. I'm still happy he went to Gonzaga.

Tired of hearing the excuse OU is young. Jeff didn't land any solid players because his best recruiting assistant got fired for the Tiny situation. Jeff signed a bunch of players that are not high division one talent.

If you remember, Tiny said he was coming back. He lied. TMG I'll bet you was failing every class unless he had friendly profs. Shouldn't have been hard to see he couldn't make his grades.

Capel seems to learning a lot of lessons lately. Last year he had guys who wouldn't buy into the team concept. This year it's the schedule.

We had discussions on this very board about dropping out of the Maui Classic and replacing those three games with more rebuilding opponents. And don't tell me about the contracts or whatever. Teams beg to get into that tournament, we could've dropped out and they would've added another very good program 15 minutes later.

Capel knew what was in store well before this schedule is set. He's been here five years now, I'm tired of him still learning on the job.

Don't know if I'm ready for an Alky at the HC.

Would you have rather him played the entire season with Fitz, Cade, pledger, TJ Taylor, Cam, hardrick and Franklin? 7 total players. In which case everyone who is calling for his head now for signing these players would be calling for his head for not signing anyone. They'd say he'd given up on the program. What do the Capel haters want? Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

He's still an alcoholic? Maybe if we're lucky Joe C. will make another run at Geno Auriemma.

I'm with you CM, he had to sing somebody, and from the looks of things CJ is a good but undersized 4, Neal is gonna be a good player, Newell looks like a steal that late, and Blair is a steady play maker that just needs to work on his D. Its not a horrible class, they are just all young and/or need seasoning. That said its also not a class that looks to be able to get us to where we belong (NCAA Tourney) But better than anyone expected after the mass exodus and losing our two assistants

Well IMO this team does have a chance to be a middle of the pack Big12 team IF it can learn quickly how to play as a team and at the very least play well enough to win at home. If they can make that happen it might be enough to finish .500 on the year which wouldn't be too bad. There's some pieces here that fit well together but it appears OU will make it back to back sub .500 seasons. Of course that's really not at all surprising when you take in account TMG & Tiny's exodus coupled with the NCAA infraction committee sniffing around. I can see why we struck out with a few recruits especially guys that were being recruited by the world to begin with. BUT the more I think about it, Capel will be around next year and I don't disagree with him that next years team with Osby & Goff certainly changes things. I know this much, we will be very athletic next year with a lot of talent to go around.

Yeah let's fire this guy clearly he is a lost cause as a coach. Still learning lessons, we don't have time for him to learn stuff while our prestigious history wallows in the mud. No matter what the circumstances last year, this year all should be healed. There isn't any carry over between seasons anyway. Hopefully UNC will fire Roy Williams for fielding poor teams 2 years in a row, we can scoop him up. Then again, maybe he isn't OU material either, he's been a head coach 20+ years now and he's still not perfect.

Great comparison of Capel to Roy Williams.
