Sittler hit the nail on the head. The reason why Joe C. won't fix this mess is because he would have to admit he made a mistake in hiring Capel in the first place.
I have said the same thing privately, although I disagree that Joe C won't fix it should the free fall continue. There may come a time when he won't have a choice. But I agree that it will not come easily for the reasons you stated.
That said, however, I want to see Coach Capel put the pieces together and fix this mess on his own. While my confidence in his ability as a coach has been shaken somewhat. I have not given up hope that he can be the program leader most of us were extremely proud of a few short months ago.
You know Romulus I really don't think you like Coach Capel period. I don't think he could do anything to your liking, but the truth of the matter is that Coach Capel is not going to leave OU like he found it. He's a better person and a better coach than that. I predict that once he get's this turned around you will be one of the first people on the board supporting him and this program once again. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

You can't have it both ways, Ada. First, you agree with the poster who believes Castiglione made a mistake hiring Capel. Then, in the next breath you say you haven't given up hope that Jeff will get things turned around.
If you still believe in Capel and think he can/will stop this "free fall" and get the program back on track, then, by all means, continue to stand up for him until you're 100 percent sure that he's failed and is not the man for the job.
You're not reading very carefully. In firing Coach Capel, Joe C. would be admitting to a mistake. That's undeniable (and even if he weren't, the firing would be viewed that way by members of the media and the public).
So it could be argued that that's why Joe C. won't fire Coach Capel as quickly as he might otherwise have done.
All of the above has nothing to do with Ada's personal opinion, which he states quite clearly in the second part of his post.
There are grays in this world, as much as some would like to insist there is only black and white. It's entirely possible to believe that Capel can clean up this mess, while still being shaken by the fact that oversaw the creation of the mess in the first place.
Coach Capel hasn't yet earned blind loyalty, and I'm sure he doesn't expect it -- from Joe C., from the media or from the fans.
But Capel's a good coach and a quality human being. He simply got burned by some recruits whose character wasn't on the same level as their basketball skills.
Friday's unexpected and mysterious resignation of assistant coach Oronde Taliaferro added hits that Capel's program continues to absorb. Taliaferro recruited freshman forward Keith "Tiny" Gallon, who allegedly had $3,000 transferred by a financial adviser into a bank account he shares with his mother.
