Capel won't be escaping from free-falling OU >>> Tulsa World

Sittler hit the nail on the head. The reason why Joe C. won't fix this mess is because he would have to admit he made a mistake in hiring Capel in the first place.

I have said the same thing privately, although I disagree that Joe C won't fix it should the free fall continue. There may come a time when he won't have a choice. But I agree that it will not come easily for the reasons you stated.

That said, however, I want to see Coach Capel put the pieces together and fix this mess on his own. While my confidence in his ability as a coach has been shaken somewhat. I have not given up hope that he can be the program leader most of us were extremely proud of a few short months ago.

You know Romulus I really don't think you like Coach Capel period. I don't think he could do anything to your liking, but the truth of the matter is that Coach Capel is not going to leave OU like he found it. He's a better person and a better coach than that. I predict that once he get's this turned around you will be one of the first people on the board supporting him and this program once again. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

Ada, that sums up my feelings very well.

if he left today, he would leave it worse than he found it. I hope he gets things turned around, but don't think he will be around long enough to do that.

I think Capel wants to stick around and fix the program. If he left today, he'd always have to live with the fact that he hurt an already hurting program. He doesn't want that legacy, what good-character person would?

The fact is that he's still young in many ways. He'll learn from this past season and improve as a coach from it. I just hope that our fanbase gives him enough time and space to do so.

You can't have it both ways, Ada. First, you agree with the poster who believes Castiglione made a mistake hiring Capel. Then, in the next breath you say you haven't given up hope that Jeff will get things turned around.

If you still believe in Capel and think he can/will stop this "free fall" and get the program back on track, then, by all means, continue to stand up for him until you're 100 percent sure that he's failed and is not the man for the job.

You're not reading very carefully. In firing Coach Capel, Joe C. would be admitting to a mistake. That's undeniable (and even if he weren't, the firing would be viewed that way by members of the media and the public).

So it could be argued that that's why Joe C. won't fire Coach Capel as quickly as he might otherwise have done.

All of the above has nothing to do with Ada's personal opinion, which he states quite clearly in the second part of his post.

There are grays in this world, as much as some would like to insist there is only black and white. It's entirely possible to believe that Capel can clean up this mess, while still being shaken by the fact that oversaw the creation of the mess in the first place.

Coach Capel hasn't yet earned blind loyalty, and I'm sure he doesn't expect it -- from Joe C., from the media or from the fans.

I agree, skyvue. We should all read more carefully.

But Capel's a good coach and a quality human being. He simply got burned by some recruits whose character wasn't on the same level as their basketball skills.

This quote sums up things nicely for me. We are a year removed from the Elite 8 and the POY. That POY credits Capel for for improving his game and showing him hard work pays off. Blake had a ton to do with our Elite 8 run but so did Capel. Blake listened and he reaped the rewards. Some of those recruits this year, who were talented, would not listen and therefore did not reap ANY rewards.

Friday's unexpected and mysterious resignation of assistant coach Oronde Taliaferro added hits that Capel's program continues to absorb. Taliaferro recruited freshman forward Keith "Tiny" Gallon, who allegedly had $3,000 transferred by a financial adviser into a bank account he shares with his mother.

I'm sorry but Coach O had a little in the recruiting of Tiny. Capel was the main recruiter of Tiny and the reason Tiny chose OU. Coach O did however have a lot to do with the recruiting of TMG.
