IOWA CITY — Potential Iowa recruit Cezar Guerrero said tonight he plans to discuss his college choices Wednesday with his mother and brother and have a decision “real soon.”
“I’m meeting with my brother (Wednesday) and then after that we’re going to figure out when I’m going to be making my decision,” Guerrero said.
As far as when he’ll make his decision, “It just depends on how everything goes. Right now they want me to focus on school and finish this year up good. I’ll be making my decision real soon.”
Guerrero has one visit left, and he’s undetermined if he’ll use it. He’s already visited Western Kentucky, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, along with Iowa.
Guerrero, a 6-foot point guard from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif., visited Iowa last weekend. He sat under the west basket and cheered during Iowa’s 67-65 upset against No. 6 Purdue.
“I liked it a lot,” Guerrero said. “I saw the atmosphere, how people really were and that they were in love with basketball. It was a great thing. I loved it to be honest with you.
“They’re a really good team. They have a really good coach and just everything about them. They have the right players and the right system.”
Iowa has two available scholarships for the 2011 class, and Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery has said he’d like to sign a guard and a post. An ESPN scouting report says Guerrero “is about as quick as it gets at this level. He has tremendous speed with the ball in his hands and he’s an acrobatic finisher in the paint. He has looked to get his teammates more involved (last) summer and has the ability to make the spectacular pass.”
ESPN ranks Guerrero as the nation’s 23rd-best point guard, while Rivals.com ranks Guerrero as the nation’s 14-best point guard, No. 61 overall and the 10th-best crowd-pleasing player. Guerrero described leadership as his top on-court trait, followed by quickness, speed and well-rounded skills and called himself a “floor general.” He also said McCaffery gave him no assurances on minutes or starting position.
“No assurances, that’s for sure,” said Guerrero, who would like to study acting or broadcasting in college. “My only assurances is that I work real hard for my position, and I don’t want people to go and act like, ‘Oh, Fran gave him the spot because the name that he has.’
“I want my teammates to know I earned my spot.”
