Beard signed a six-year contract that will pay him $4.575 million annually, keeping him under contract through the 2024-25 season. His annual salary is now the fourth highest in the country, behind Kentucky's John Calipari, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Tennessee's Rick Barnes, according to USA Today's coaching salary database.
I can't imagine more than a handful of programs would be willing to pay much more than 5M/year for a coach like Beard, and most of those programs already have a guy (i.e. Kentucky). I thought UCLA was one of them, but even they're playing it cheap. Beard may not have maxed out his location/program, but I have to imagine he came pretty close to maximizing his earnings. He's closer to overpaid than underpaid when you consider he's making more than Self, Wright, and Izzo.
And for the record, I'm not saying this is a bad move on Tech's part, as they would have to pay a lot more than this to lure a guy like Self away from KU. It's just a lot of risk, and there's absolutely no hometown discount. If what I'm hearing is right about there only being a 3M buyout for non-Big XII teams looking to hire him, then that all but assures this deal will never be a bargain. I wonder what Tech's buyout is if he underperforms.

Wow. He sure had his way with TT in this negotiation.
How is that surprising tho?
Glad he’s staying in Lubbock. Good for the conference basketball wise. Gottlieb was on the sports animal the other day talking about how UCLA wasn’t really interested in him because he was to “Midwest” for them and didn’t fit their criteria.
Not too surprising, but with the years and money being right, I figured they'd at least get a large buyout. I knew he'd have the keys, but it looks like Tech lost every single negotiation.

Did they really say that? For their sake, I hope they didn't. Beard was born in Georgia, and has done most of his coaching in Texas. He's southern af.
Now...the guy that UCLA hired that was born and spent most of his coaching career in Ohio on the other hand...

Wasn't going to be a good fit for either of them. UCLA needs somebody that can handle that LA, SoCal lifestyle. Wasn't Sampson. Wasn't Beard. Wasn't Lon.
Not saying they got the right guy, but it's a better option than those other guys. Barnes would have been interesting had he left Tennessee.
