Coach Sampson Interview with Cougar Video

Hated the way it ended with Kelvin. I know he could be arrogant at times, but he can flat out coach. Not always pretty, but teams were defensively very good, Hardworking, and won. I think he will do very well there.

Kelvin did a good job for OU. We all know that. I'm appreciative of what he accomplished on the court. But, he was well past his "sell by date" when he left. Then he had a pretty short self life on his next stop.

I don't wish him bad. But, I would think it quite unlikely that he would duplicate his OU success at Houston.

He might get back to where he was ... but much like Tubby Smith, he'll face a longer road getting back to his expected level of success.

Most of what you stated in that first paragraph was unnecessary at the very least. The OU basketball program prospered under Coach Sampson, and most Sooner fans are very appreciative of what he did for the program and the university during his tenure. Indiana fans never wanted him in the first place and would have found a way to run him off even if that "texting" thing had not given them the opportunity they wanted.

Equating Kelvin's tenure at OU to food spoiling on a shelf is quite tacky, and in my opinion, a little beneath a poster of your stature.

Missed hearing his interviews. Looking forward to watching him build UofH.

I'm not above tacky and I was trying to be kind. See if this fits for you better. Kelvin out stayed his welcome. He got us on probation as well as his next stop. He received a 5 yr sanction.

I'm glad Kelvin came to OU. I'm glad he is gone. I don't think there is any chance he gets much of anything done at Houston. His time has passed.

And I'm quite confident he'll prove you wrong … and I'm not above revisiting this thread at the appropriate time.

Had Kelvin not left OU, our next 3-7 years would have been more like the Hollis years, than any of the other OU/Kelvin years. He was getting ready to bump us up another level. Too bad we didn't get to find out what those years would have looked like.

I'd take him back right now

Yep...man that team would have been awesome.

It is not surprising and it is no skin off my nose that Kelvin still has his supporters. He did keep the program in pretty good shape.

What I am saying is that before he left Kelvin had lost the support of many prominent boosters and the confidence of the administration.

While it is a nice sentiment that some fans would like to have him back, the people that would actually make the decision on that, would have no part of him. My sympathies just happen to lie with that group.

I don't know about that 3-7 years comment.. we would have had stronger NCAA sanctions had he stayed.. but we certainly wouldn't have fallen like we did under Capel..

I do see your point and mostly agree with you, Gary. But, I disagree strongly that Kelvin won't do well at Houston. He will get them dancing and keep them there...

He might. I'm not offering to bet any money that he won't.

Thanks for posting the video, Trav. Always been a Sampson fan and he did a really good job here. Hated how things ended and, on the character and integrity scale, we are way ahead with Coach Kruger. However, I think it would be difficult for anyone to get us as disciplined, tough, and as well coached as we were under Kelvin. As good a tip to buzzer coach as I've seen in college basketball, too.

It does depend on the sanctions. Anything short than a few recruiting sanctions, and maybe the loss of 1-2 scholarships, and I don't think it would have hurt him at all. Not only was he bringing in that great class, he had several of his type of player already on campus, plus he was in on a lot of quality talent in the following class. It's a shame we never got to see it materialize.

I don't know if this is accurate. As I understand things what Sampson did wrong at OU was not a big deal. The OU compliance department caught the problem and self reported. If you don't know, Sampson was not counting contacts with recruits when they would say I can't talk now call back later. Sampson took the position that both contacts were a single contact. The NCAA prohibited OU from changing anything until it completed its investigation. They basically set Sampson up to look much worse than he was because OU would have put a stop to it and the number of violations would have been relatively minimal. Even with the long investigation the number of contacts was not nearly as bad as it seemed in writing because there were multiple coaches and it happened over multiple years. So doing this once a week by several members of the coaching staff adds up to hundreds of impermissible contacts.

Sampson then compounded the problem by refusing to accept responsibility. Had he said I am sorry, my interpretation of the rule was wrong and it won't happen again, he would likely still be the coach at OU and the sanctions would have been minimal. At least this is how I understand things.

I tend to agree with you. OU would have been very good with James, Reynolds, Crocker and Keith Clark. Capel's first year under Sampson would have been a roster of James, Neal, Carter, Clark, Reynolds, Crocker, Godbold, AJ, T. Griffin and Longer. That is pretty nice 10 man rotation. That line up would make a lot of baskets and really spread the floor. Longar, Clark, Carter, and James all had really good range for big guys. T. Griffin wasn't a bad shooter.
