Coaching possibilities for next season....

have you seen Steve Alford teams? Some of his good Iowa teams were insanely hard-nosed.

I'm in Iowa right now. My family is LAUGHING at the board for even suggesting Alford. Alford just got done doing to the Iowa program the exact thing that is happening to the Oklahoma program.

The OU job will not be open for next season, but here we go anyway:

Pastner - no chance, absolute pipe dream.

Alford - close to no chance, just got a new contract with UNM, The Pit has been renovated. He loves ABQ and so does his wife.

Stevens - no happening, he is a Butler guy right now...maybe in a few years he will make the jump.

Eustachy - yes please and throw me a Natty Ice Light while you're at it.

Tubbs - don't think so because Minny is about to have a really solid year, they will do what it takes to retain him.l

Gillespie - real possibility, wouldn't mind him at all. Instead of the Natty Ice Light, will probably have to switch to whiskey.

Personally, the coach I wanted when Sampson left (and was mentioned in this thread) was Gregg Marshall. Love his style of play, has been successful at low and now mid-major levels. Experienced, but young enough to relate with a lot of players, would run a style similar to Mizzou's if he could get the right players.

Alford didn't have any success at Iowa because of his recruiting strategies. Since his move to UNM he has changed his approach and is doing very well.

He quit on OU. He wasn't fired. OU was put on probation and he bolted.

Please feed that to your Gawk friends because I'm not buying it. Our fans gave him no support despite being the winningest coach in school history. They did nothing but bad mouth his coaching style and him personally for years before violations were committed.

Not buying what? He didn't get OU on probation and then quit?

If you think, by in large, OU fans didn't support Sampson up until the last couple of years then you are wrong. Yes, I am a Gawk. I know basketball. Just because some people on the message boards didn't support Sampson doesn't mean he didn't have the support of the fanbase.
And really he didn't get blasted on the message boards until the last couple years.

I think Sampson was a good coach but he could not have the same success now as he did in the 90's and early 00's. Kids are different. The game is different. Same reason Bobby Knight couldn't have the same success. Sampson lost his last couple teams. Kids didn't respond to him like they did before. And that's more a knock on kids today than Sampson. My knock on Sampson, in that regard, would be his stubborness and unwillingness to change with the times. Same with Knight.
It is what it is.
Feed that to your Florida buddies on the golf course in your plaid pants.

This whole post is a freakin joke.

We have a coach and likely WILL NOT have an opening next year!!!

I love some of the illogical thoughts that are thrown out on this board. We all knew (well anyone who has a freakin clue) that this year would be a rebuilding year. So basically, OU has lost 1 game (IMO) that they have no business losing. They were 3-0 heading into Maui, played a top 15 team tought to the wire, go beat by a team with equivilent talent and lost to a team (albeit a Div II) that was leading #2 ranked MSU and played them to the wire.

I was as frustrated as anyone with the loss..believe me...but I guess I am just much more positive then most on here.

Things I did like was the play of Blair. I never thought Pledger was the answer at PG. This is a better team when Blair is running the point. I also think CJ is coming a long and has a nice stroke to 17 ft...I wouldnt be opposed to starting him and bringing Nick off the bench. To me, Cam is the missing link. He has got to be more assertive and be a guy that can give us 10+ points a game. If he can do that...with consistent output from Cade, Fitz and hopefully Pledger...this team can become a decent team.

Face it, this team is not going to be great..but can be good..and with the two additions we have coming next year..if we can find a nice guard to add to the mix...I think the future is brighter than most of you.

The WORSE thing we can do as fans is turn our backs to this team becuase of our frustration and not support them or go to the games. Face it, we as sooner fans have simply been spoiled. We hadn't had a losing season in over 30 years until last year!!!! I don't think many of you fully understand that...we took it (winning) for granted. Ans know we are experiencing what practically all programs experience from time to time..and as fans are not dealing with it as well as we should be.

THIS!

+1 :clap

The joke is the people that know nothing about basketball and think that opinions were formed on 1 game...

this is something that has been brewing for quite some time...

Without arguably the greatest player to ever play at this university, this team has been mediocre to below average at best...

I'm sorry, but i'm not going to sit back and defend a coach that cant create an identity for his program when he has been here for 5 yrs...there are just too many holes in how he coaches and plainly isnt getting the job done...

He will most likely be here next season, and it might be the best thing for the program...that way the next coach isnt left with a roster of athletes like this...but he wont deserve to be back next season when this one is done...Everyone remember, he created this mess...this isnt his first year after taking over from Sampsons stink...

Unfortunately, because I like Jeff Capel, this is all true.

I guess my biggest disappointment, and those still supporting the job Capel is doing please explain to me, what offensive and defensive schemes does this team run? What is the offensive and defensive game plan? What is the offensive and defensive identity?
After 5 years I have no idea.

Afraid I don't either on that point.

Aside from the issue of a system I just wonder if he hasn't bitten off more than he can chew at this point.

We don't have the proper depth, size, or offensive talent to run straight up so it would seem we'd need an angle to focus on and build from there. It's like getting a toehold for traction if you're trying to climb up a mossy hill - Jeff can't get up a single inch because we fall back down every time he tries to scale up.

I know he wants to be a team that gets out on the break to try to get easy points in transition, then go to the halfcourt game. We were able to do that in 07' & 08', but last year and so far this year this hasn't been the case. And the halfcourt offense just looks like a jumbled mess. I don't know if it's bad play calling or if it's the players lack of understanding, but something isn't working.

Defense he want's to run primarily man to man, which i think they have done so far in Jeff's tenure with the exception of this year. They start every game in man, but have been going to a lot of matchup zone and zone defense because this team just cannot play man defense at this point.

I appreciate the comment.
In both explanations you say he "wants" to run this and that. After 5 years the systems should be in place and the personnel should reflect those schemes. There should be some consistency.
Watching this team reminds me of watching a young QB in year 5 who's played for 4 different offensive coordinators.

I think it was pretty consistent in his first 3 years then last year the wheels fell off and its been a struggle to get back on track. This season he is having to coach outside of his style and adjust his style to the players this season. I don't think that a bad tourny showing is the straw that broke the camels back. Now I think we just need to see if he can rally or not. If he can't then changes may need to be made.

In his first 3 years the program progressed, progressed, progressed, then last season the bottom fell out. This season into next is the crucial period where we see if he can get the program back on the rise or not.

Bobby Lutz (ISU), Tubby Smith (Minnesota), and Mark Fox (Georgia) all seem to be the most realistic still...

For all the Mark Fox haters, he has the Bulldogs at 12-2 and they just beat Kentucky yesterday to go to 1-0 in conference. I don't know how the rest of their season will turn out, the guy was a big time winner at Nevada and looks to have something going this year at Georgia.

Fox to OU may be a step down as well as Tubby to OU.

I would like Fox the most. Actually I would love Tubby Smith but I don't know if he leaves Minnesota as others have posted. A national title winning coach would be great for this program and bring the most excitement.

OU's historically been a top 20 program in basketball. Just because they are bad right now just means that the current coach isn't cutting it IMO. Billy Tubbs had us in the top 10 for much of the 80s. Kelvin had us competing near the top of the Big 12 and as the 2nd best program in the conference for much of the late 90s and early to mid 200s.

I just hope we go for a guy in a major "BCS" conference this time and not a young up and comer at a small college.

I know all that but at this very moment Georgia and Minnesota has a better basketball culture. History doesn't pertain too much to a 16-18 year old. Most of the guys OU recruits don't even know who Tubbs is/was. At the very least the schools are equal so why would you leave a NCAA tourney team to rebuild another program. The answer? Smith and Fox aren't going to.
