Coaching possibilities for next season....

OU is NOT in a position to take a coach away from a major D1.

NOT

NOT

I don't know what flavor of Kool-Aid gives someone this idea every time a coaching hire is discussed.

Now a coach from somewhere like N. Iowa or Central Michigan or Montana etc... then sure.

Heck, you MAY be able to lure away a Clemson or an Oregon State or a Vandy if you offer a much more lucrative package.

You hire Grant McCasland and 2 old guys who know everything there is to know about ncaa D1 basketball. You can let him hire those assistants if that will help his ego, but those would be the stipulations. They need to be OLDER and preferably one very familiar with Texas or maybe even from Houston and IMO you get the second one with great familiarity of Louisiana. None of this E Coast BS right now. We need to beat the bushes around here.

When I grow up I want to be like Billy G.

Dunno, since taking over at Mercer he's gone 17-15, 16-17, and now 4-11 this year. Don't know the situation at that school but it doesn't exactly scream that he's ready for a promotion. But, like I said, don't really know anything else about that program. Hey, everyone laughed at Auburn hiring Gene Chizik and now they're playing for a national title.

I can't wait to read the threads on Auburn's boards in a few years saying Gene can't win without Cameron Newton.

Some coaches you should consider if you decide to get rid of Capel after this season.

Randy Bennett - Has completely built the St. Mary's program from nothing to Gonzaga's biggest in conference challenge. He was a longtime assistant to Lorenzo Romar (Washington's coach) and though he is mostly a west coast guy he has been in the MidWest before when Romar was the HC at SLU.

Chris Mooney - Has turned around the Richmond Spiders program. They were went 13-17 in his first season there and have gone 46-25 in the last two seasons. So far this year they are 13-4 (2-0). The A10 is probably the strongest overall non major conference, so he has built his program against good competition.

Cuonzo Martin - Has done an impressive job so far at Missouri State. They should be a tournament team this year and they have improved every year under Martin. He was a long time Purdue assistant under Gene Keady and Matt Painter. He is also from the Midwest, he was born in East St. Louis, Played basketball and was an assistant coach at Purdue, and is a head coach at Missouri State.

Dave Rose - He has taken BYU to the NCAA tournament 4 of the last 5 years and is off to a great start again this year at 16-1 (2-0). He would probably be the most expensive name I have mentioned so far but BYU hoops are headed to the WCC after this season so it would seem like a good time for a program to steal Rose away. He is also from Texas and might want to return to the area or even have some recruiting connections down there. His record at BYU so far is 141-41 (64-16).

Gregg Marshall - Like Martin at MSU, Wichita State has improved every year under Marshall and he has them off to a great start this year at 13-3 (4-1). Before he was hired by Wichita State he was the HC at Winthrop and he took them to the NCAA tournament 7 out of the 9 years he was there.

Thanks for the info.

I would want Marshall out of any realistic scenario. He was one of the guys I thought would be a great replacement for KS as well. He has turned his last two programs into consistent winners, would be a perfect fit at OU.

Chris Mack.

Excellent post MissFan.

I'd hold off on Chris Mack. This is only his second season as a head coach and while he took Xavier to the sweet sixteen last season he inherited a very good situation. So far this season Xavier is 9-5 (1-0) which isn't bad but isn't as good as X has been the last few years. I would give him a few years to prove he is a good coach and not just taking over a good program.

For example check out Chris Lowery at Southern Illinois. He took over after a strong program from Bruce Weber and Matt Painter and for his first three years looked like he was going to be the next hot coach from SIU. His first three years he went 78-26 with three NCAA tournament trips, his last three years though with his own players he is 46-47 a NIT appearance.

I'm all about Gregg Marshall and was when KS left for Indiana. Dude can coach and proved it at Winthrop and now WSU. I think he'd take the OU job in a heartbeat, I'm just afraid somebody else is going to come calling before we make a move.

What about Tom Penders? He has East Coast connections as well as Houston connections.

Great points and I should reserve judgment after Mack gets through that A-10 sched. I like him though.

Terry Stotts
t_stotts_300_080107.jpg

Stotts, an OU alum, has never coached in the college game, at least as far as I know. One would have to question if he could do it. I have no doubt he can probably coach the X's and O's or he wouldn't have made it in the NBA so long. I do have to question his recruiting, though.

If he wanted the job, I certainly wouldn't complain though. I'd be very excited!

Some more guys...

Johnny Jones - North Texas
Brian Gregory - Dayton
Cliff Warren - Jacksonville
Shaka Smart - VCU (Don't think we'd go down that road again)
Donnie Jones - UCF
Dane Fife - IPFW
Sydney Johnson - Princeton
Coach K - Duke (He needs a new challenge:))
Michael Jordan

Some assistants

Chris Collins - Duke (I know, not another Duke guy)
Rob Murphy - Syracuse
Mark Fisher - San Diego State (Steve's son)
Harvey Grant - Hampton (not enough experience yet)
Mark Montgomery - Michigan State
Greg Gard - Wisconsin
Yanni Hufnagel - Harvard (I'm kidding)

This is what I said pre Capel.

If you've ever seen Chris Mack's Twitter, you would support him as head coach.

I agree with this. Particularly about recruiting Texas and Louisiana. It is fine to reach out to star players on the east and west coast but OU is not Kansas. We need to get 90% of our players from this region until we have improved substantially.

Why would a kid from the east coast seriously consider OU if he could play at an ACC school or a Big East school?

There is more than enough talent in this region.

I almost forgot about Stotts as a candidate. The NBA pedigree might help in recruiting. He's also a really good guy - I'm assuming he hasn't changed since he was an OU student back in my day.
