Comments on disappointing attendance

Not unless they bought a football ticket. However frequently some games get changed to free for them. I think the season ticket is around fifty dollars. Maybe even less. They have no excuse for not going to the games.

The University owns LNC, right? Maybe they could sell it to the city to help finance the new arena.

They didn’t originally wn it. I believe it was owned by the Noble Foundation. OU actually had to rent it out for use. My guess is they probably own it now.

OU has wasted so much money renovating it over the years. There has been barely anything noticeable to change. The seats are and will always be removed from the action. The chairs placed on the floor are a joke. Unless you are on the court you can’t see because the floor is actually below the hardwood and it is flat so the chairs on the court block your view.

How much have they spent in renovations recently?

Several million in the early Kruger days.

So you blame lack of winning then admit it has little to do with winning, all in the same paragraph.

Impressive stuff!

Happy to make your day.

I don’t fill all the seats. I’m not an average fan who wants to see winning like most are. If OU wants to fill more seats they need to win more.

Perhaps you didn’t understand the difference between filling seats and keeping me interested so you got snarky.

I want to watch good basketball. Winning is nice, but I want to see good play. NCAA basketball is not good basketball. I find it boring so I don’t even watch it on tv.

So why are you a member of an OU hoops board if you dont even like NCAA basketball.

What is good basketball? NBA sure isnt

This is an underrated topic that isn't talked about enough. I can't wait for the new insight.

Boom. This is a rehash of the same old thing.

1) We aren't getting a new arena, especially not in this economic environment.
2) The University has done everything they can to improve this problem. More action during timeouts. Cheaper tickets for Students. Easier ways to get rid of tickets for season ticket holders. Got seats closer to the floor. And many more.
3) This is all about the fans and their priorities. If they wanted to come they would. It is as simple as that. These complaints that people are making are all about you and not the product the University is providing. The atmosphere can be rocking in that place. We have all seen it. It is about the fans making it that way.

In a perfect world we could redesign the arena and put it closer to everyone and make sure that it was always fun and everyone had a seat as comfortable as their recliner at home and personal food service attendants could deliver your food right to your seats and luxurious bathrooms were within 20 steps of everyone. But guess what... it hasn't been like that in over 40 years.

Everyone glorifies the Fieldhouse. My dad tells of getting there minutes before tip and sitting at half court. And that was with Clifford Ray and Gar Heard. It is impossible to park people at that place. And it is incredibly uncomfortable.

Fans and Students need to stop making excuses and go to the games or we just need to accept that this is how it is and stop complaining.

I live in Tulsa and I am able to make 2-3 games per year. I happened to be in town for the game on Wednesday. For everyone complaining about how uncomfortable it is, you are being ridiculous. I got there less than 30 minutes before the game and parked within 100 yards of the front steps. Had access to good food options, beer, etc. The game lasted 2 hours and I zipped out of the parking lot after the game. I was staying in Norman and was home by 10:15. Had I been in North OKC it would have been 10:45. It was a very entertaining game. The team played well. OU worked hard to make the experience great. Far different than when everyone thought the band director running around waving his shirt passed as entertainment. And yet those were more exciting games than now because of the fans. The band director thing happened organically and people loved it because we were all there to have fun.

The team is about the same quality as those mid 90s Kelvin teams. The pace was way slower back then. There is no appreciable difference with those teams and yet the crowds were far better and way more into the games.

This has always been and will always be about the fans. You are spoiled if you think there is a problem with this team. They are competitive. They work hard. They are easy to root for.

I accept it. I believe there is nothing that can be done. I think we are witnessing the slow death of Sooner basketball. Crowds will continue to get smaller which will result in a decline in recruiting and the cycle will just continue.

I unblocked so I could gain some insight...

But recruiting is on the uptick if you follow it.

Next years class of 2021 could be top 10. Long ways to go but we are in a great spot.

Phones!

Every student has one which they use all of the time. They use them in class, while eating, while driving, probably while having sex. Why go to a game when they can sit at a bar or at home and be on their phones!

I could be totally off base on this, but, I think the pathetic state of the OU women's program is having a trickle down negative affect on attendance at the men's games. I know several couples that have season tickets to both men and women and they gave up on the women's program and quit going last year and now seldom go to the men's games as well. JMO

I think the only way to really assess this is to compare attendance vs capacity numbers for the rest of the Big 12. not ticket sales, but actual attendance. Let's see if OU truly has a problem, or if its just a thing now in basketball.

It's only going to get worse. We split our tickets with my folks, they go during weekdays and we go to the weekend games when our kids commitments lessen. We are diehards and its still tough to make it work out to attend every game. Pretty much see the same folks at every game, and at least in our section I would say the median age is pretty far north of 50. I do not see a lot of younger families in attendance, which means the base will keep on dwindling... I suspect a large part of it has to do with kids activities as well. I have a buddy that has 4 season tickets and he has a hard time getting to the game due to kids sports commitments, then he can barely give the tickets away most of the time. Weeknights not good due to work/kids, and most of the weekend games are early which are prime real estate for kids sports. Been a while since I was a student, but went to every game, it was a welcome break from the grind. The sports passion is just not translating to the new generation. Will be a tough battle to win going forward.

Long post here, but after reading all four pages, here are my thoughts. It seems like we are always having a discussion complaining about attendance and part of me says we just need to accept it for what it is. I agree with some of the previous posts about not blaming the university and product for the attendance issues. Are they contributors? Possibly, but I believe it is more the environment of society than OU basketball. While I think it is okay to be vocal about things that can improve the product so that the university can be motivated to start or keep moving forward with changes, as a fanbase, we just need to accept this is where we are on attendance.

I too am like soonertravis being from Tulsa and have season tickets. I have for 18 years. Until the last 3-4 years where work and activities seem to get in the way more often, I made the drive for every game, even weeknight games where I got home about 12:30-1:00. But because of all games being on TV, the ability to stream games or replay them online, and the constant updates on social media, there are games, like last week against an 8th place team that tipped at 8:00 pm, I have chosen to stay home. If I as an "old" does this, what do I anticipate a millennial or student will do?

Attendance is down at ALL sporting events unless we are talking about major events. NFL is down, MLB is down, NBA is down big, and if you go to OU football games and see the empty seats around you, even though it is a "sellout", even OU football attendance is down. Entertainment choices are made more from the home than attending an event. The only reason big events still draw well is it seems people are more interested in "being there" and posting a selfie to Snapchat or IG than to actually watch the event. People are interested in experiences only to live it with others through social media. Go to a mall, an airport, or about anywhere where people gather, and they are not talking to each other or observing what's around them. Their heads are down toward their phone, iPad or PC, with little interaction. It is just where we are as a society.

Ironically, it would be my guess, a lot if not most of the people that are so vocal in complaining about attendance and criticizing the university don't go to games on a regular basis if at all. If all the people that complained and said no one cares about basketball anyway would actually show up every game, we may not even have an attendance issue. We want to blame Kruger, Joe C, the team or the arena for the problem, but each of us can do our part to make a difference every game, if we want, by showing up, cheering loud, and not leaving at halftime or the last media timeout.

BTW, see everyone tomorrow night at the LNC. I'll be there.
