Corbin Merritt enters transfer portal

Didn't start for his JuCo, was somehow expected to make an impact here? Hopefully he ends up somewhere where he can make an impact.

Seemed like a good kid off-the-court, but not an OU-caliber player. Not sure what Lon was thinking taking him.

I think this was expected even when he first signed.

I put on my thinking cap and could not think of a single year in the past 30 years which we did not lose a single scholarship player to some type of attrition excluding those who used up their eligibility. This is why I laugh when hearing that "we only have X number of schollies to give for next year". One will always open up. Best of luck to the young man. I hope he finds a school where he can get some playing time.

With now 2 scholarships open I honestly think both will go to transfers, 1 grad & 1 regular.

Merritt been unhappy awhile.

Big rick is staying.

The constant roster turnover isn't good. Always new faces. Always guys adjusting. Always guys learning near rolls. Be nice to get a couple of classes of 4 year kids in a row. That is how you have continued success. That is how you reload, and not rebuild.

Doolittle- did all 4 years
Manek - 4 years
Kuath- 3 years
Bienemy- 3 years
Williams- 2 years after juco
Reaves- 3 years
Not 1 freshman is transferring (yet) on a 5 man class.

Not many, if any, bigger schools aren’t going to have transfers.

The biggest turnover was after TY, which was obviously a team in turmoil.

Weak take. Look at all programs.

I was disappointed to learn Merritt has entered the transfer portal. I was hoping he would be the big with some bulk I have been asking for.

But, if we’re going to bring in a guard/wing grad transfer, Big Rick better be ready!

Besides McGusty I can’t think of one guy who went somewhere other than pro who was worth damn. Merritt was bench fodder and now we can use that scholly for a grad transfer. This is great news for both parties.

Not to beat a dead horse but why was this guy ever a take? Why, why, why?

That being said hope he can ball somewhere else..

Per my post above, we have now had at least 30 consecutive years of losing players to attrition. That means even Kelvin Sampson did not have even one season which he kept every single player with eligibility from the season prior. It's just part of college basketball. We lost Corbin Merritt, not Ryan Humphrey, JR Raymond or Scottie Reynolds. The key now is to replace him with someone who can help us either in 2021, 2022, or both.

I’d wager a fair amount of money that we have had less turnover than the majority of high majors.

Perhaps Hield, Cousins, Woodard, Spangler has skewed your perception of normal.

I get your point and agree that Merritt transferring is good news for OU, but I don't agree the guys that have transferred would not be contributors. Just because they weren't AA or All-Conference somewhere else doesn't mean they couldn't play. Some of the transfers we have lost would have been at least great guys off the bench, and we have seen how valuable that can be.

Would have liked to have kept Hornbeak for instance, he could have made a difference. Even guys like Frank Booker or Buford, or even Jordan Shephard could have helped if they would have stayed. These are just guys in the LK era that I can think of that would have been nice if they would have stayed. Merritt is not one of those.

Agree with all those guys, they just all had baggage. If they could’ve gotten over themselves a bit then they would’ve been solid OU players.
