The Native Americans need to vote on whether the Washington Redskins should change their team name. From what I have heard in the past, only a very small minority are offended by the word "Redskins". As far as I'm concerned, their opinions should be the only one that matters.

Maybe I'm missing something, but we tend to classify people by skin color such as black/brown/white etc and all walks of life do this regardless of political affiliations or civil liberties. Seems like the name was chosen to embolden the history of this nation in a heartfelt manner as opposed to utilizing a name such as "Slaves" to purposely degrade a class of people. Case in point. The term queer was offensive and now it is a celebratory word. People's minds are fickle for what is acceptable one moment changes in a blink of an eye.

^^^^This!

It really doesn't matter what white people think about the "redskins" moniker.

If native americans are offended, it needs to be changed.

Much like I could call some of the posters here "assholes"....it doesn't matter if I'm not offended when I call them that; the fact that they will be offended is why I don't call them that.

Money talks and the reason this name change is probably going to happen is because several of their corporate partners, including Fed Ex who is part owner of the team, are saying they want it to happen or they are going to take their money elsewhere.

By the way, Northeastern State University changed its name from "Redmen" to "Riverhawks" several years ago, way ahead of the curve.

Yes, so did St. John's University (to the Red Storm). Good for them. Dan Snyder has mentioned several times over the past 20 years that he continuously gets asked when the team name will change. As unpopular as he is based on his "on the field (lack of) success", he seems to make a lot of sense when he answers this question. He has repeatedly said that as long as the overwhelming percentage of Native Americans support the name, he has no incentive to change it. Of course, with sponsors dropping out, he may not have a choice. Below is a direct quote from Dan Snyder seven years back.

May 10, 2013: Team owner Daniel Snyder vows not to alter the name in an interview with USA Today. “We’ll never change the name,” he said. “It’s that simple. NEVER — you can use caps.”

Yup...I just posted to that effect. Target just announced they will start removing Washington Redskins merchandise. Snyder is going to cave, but not because he had some kind of epiphany.

Still, I'm amazed how people who have no ties to Native Americans let this bother them. I'm reminded of an argument my brother (conservative) and sister (liberal) got into a couple years back. My brother said something that did not apply to my sister one bit, but she told him she was offended. He quickly became exasperated and basically said: "What I said does not apply to you. That means you have no personal right to be offended!" I just sat back and laughed as the two went at it.

It's not just a matter of the particular group being offended or not.

It's not like we should be able to objectify and talk **** about someone just because they're willing to (or seemingly willing to) take it.

It's the idea that some arbitrary trait they have chosen is used to determine someone's value ... often an immutable trait. We're not just trying to get rid of specific examples. We're trying to eliminate the whole mindset.

No but he said words don’t matter to him.

(And it’s not as offensive as the N-word but it’s still offensive)

Sooners is offensive and racist. White people in covered wagons stealing land from Indians. We should change the name.

What percentage?

How is a football team name determining their value?

The Washington Redskins should change everything about their team. Because they suck.

I agree that it probably has a minimal effect in many cases ... as evidenced by the examples given above. But the general idea is opposed and that's their basis. Much rather deal with it all at once than tackle LGBTQ etc... letter by letter.

53 countries in the UN “human rights council” supports communist China’s crackdown on Hong Kong and their new security law. Disgusting. Yet another example of the joke the UN has become.

The UN has become so corrupt it should be dismantled.

In America, 3,000 babies are killed every day via abortion.
Thousands of black lives are murdered every year, by someone other than police.
Thousands of homeless and/or living in poverty
Thousands of people living with daily hunger and can’t feed themselves

But here we are, tearing down statues of people that died 200 years ago. Feelings are hurt from someone that’s been dead for 2 centuries while we ignore our neighbors who are truly suffering and dying everyday. Let’s march in the streets, destroy property, and spread disease while we ignore the real problems in our society.

Let’s look to a guy who has been so oppressed, that he’s making hundreds of millions of dollars to be the posterboy for protesting America, the only country in the world that allows such freedom.

Hypocrisy is everywhere.

Cleveland should go back to the Cleveland Spiders, which was the original name of the franchise back in the late 1800's. That gives it some history and gives you tons of retro options.

Washington should go with a military name.... like Generals. Warriors would also be acceptable here.

If they went with Warriors, they could make MINOR alterations to logo. Wouldn't have to change color scheme or anything. More of a Florida State look.
