Dayton board

Well, they are playing a home game. And, it really doesn't seem like we ever get much respect outside our conference.

meh ... they have a good team. IMO they have every reason to be confident. I thought they looked superior against Providence.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be confident, I think it will be a close hard fought game, but I don't know that I agree about them being so much superior. I thought providence had plenty of chances, especially early, to have more command of that game. But they shot themselves in the foot more than being dominated by Dayton, in my opinion. They were getting beat by Boise state for most of that game that was actually in Dayton too. The home court advantage sucks and is a joke though.

They should be confident. They are a very good team with a lot of tournament experience/success and, oh by the way, they also got one of the all time hook ups from the selection committee. OU is going to have their hands full tomorrow.

If OU plays like they did Friday, OU goes home. Best hope that Dayton has nothing left in the tank.

Agreed.

But best hope that is that OU finally shows up for 40 minutes and plays with some intensity/passion. They do that, I don't think it'll matter what Dayton has left in the tank.

Location aside, this is a good match up for the Sooners. Dayton has little size and not much of a bench. If we stick to a solid inside-out halfcourt offense, and focus on rebounding and taking care of the ball, we have the matchup advantage.

Greetings from Dayton! I love the limited but special history between OU and Dayton, just thinking about Roosevelt Chapman puts a smile on the face of Dayton basketball fans, as I'm sure Wayman Tisdale does for you.

Dayton BB fans have a rather large chip on our shoulders. We are still smarting for being left out of the New Big East. Most of us feel that we were not seeded properly, and think we were disrespected by being forced to play in the First Four. Very few looked at playing in Dayton for the first round as a good thing. We are very happy however that we survived BSU and made it to Columbus. Lets face it, we are going to have 10K plus fans at Nationwide Arena, it is about as close to another home game as we could ask for. Kinda nice, but further feeds the chip on our shoulders, because even if we win everyone will say its only because we had an unfair advantage.

Dayton is short, lacking in depth, and young. We only have 6 scholarship players, none taller than 6'6" (Bobby Wehrli is a walk-on who was given a scholarship for one semester only after our roster imploded earlier in the year.) We have one senior, one junior, and the rest are underclassmen.

That being said, we are quick, tireless, and tenacious. We are led by a veteran fifth year Senior Jordan Sibert, who was a First Team all Atlantic 10 selection, Dyshawn Pierre, a converted wing who made the 2nd Team, our PG Scoochie Smith, and Kendall Pollard, who made the All Tourney team in Brooklyn. We have a lock down defender in Kyle Davis, and a Frosh guard Darrell Davis who was at one time leading the A10 in 3pt FG %.

We think we have one of the best young coaches in the nation in Archie Miller. This is Archie's fourth year at Dayton, and after an Elite Eight last year and getting us back to the Tourney this year he is the most popular guy in town.

Our un-official team motto is "I Don't Get Tired", based upon a popular song, appropriate for a team with depth issues. This team has had every reason to falter this year, but came together and played their best basketball when the chips were down.

All in all, on paper, you guys should probably handle us easily. Fortunately for us, the coaches and players don't read them. It should be a very good game. May the best team win!

P.S. Don't take everyone on the UD board predicting us to win as an insult. We have some of the most loyal, knowledgeable fans in college basketball, but some on our board would find a way to justify predicting us to beat UK, we wear our hearts on our sleeves :)

It will be a heckuva game, looking forward to it.

Dayton gets an edge playing in Columbus, a good break for Dayton, but that's part of the deal.

If OU's bigs play well, I think OU wins, that's their edge. If not, Dayton will advance.

The region is so wide open with Virginia and Villanova going down.

I think we need great guard play today if we want a chance to win moreso then our big men. They're gonna be pressing and putting a lot of pressure on us so it's on them to handle it and keep us under control. If we fall apart ala @ WVU we will not win.

I agree with your analysis of the game. When OU plays teams that match up well with us I tend to keep my expectations under control and more times than not the game plays out that way despite secretly expecting OU to fight and win. This is what I expect most team loving fans find themselves doing as long as your team is well coached. The other element that often doesn't find it's way into the analysis of most match-ups is the game to game improvements we see throughout a year or even tourney. Play trends as I call them. I'm curious how you'd characterize Dayton's play in this way? For OU despite losing to Iowa State in the Big12 tourney OU is playing well and things seem to be coming together with Thomas and Woodard's play. Also Booker is returning to form and that's a HUGE problem for OU's opponents. He is a threat off the bench. It seems our front court play against Albany was there and if OU can get Thomas & Spangler doing their thing OU is really tough to beat. Either big man can impact the result of the game with his play. We saw that against Albany. Also OU's guards are tall, rangy, quick, and able to penetrate the lane. The issue I see with them is their ability to finish at the rim. There seems to be an issue with this with Hield, Cousins, Booker, and even Woodard although he doesn't get all the way to the rim too much. If Miller is as good of a X's and O's coach as I believe he is he'll no doubt coach his guys to not foul on difficult finish attempts by OU's guards. I truly think this is a weakness for OU. OU is pretty good at what they do... rebound, defense, push the ball, low post play, and pressure your guards. I see OU with the advantage but again Miller could be the difference if Dayton plays smart, scrappy, and takes advantages of opportunities.

I'm excited to watch this one! Winner gets Mich State in the Sweet 16 and a boost in program prestige. It's on the line today! Good luck!

Archie Miller has the team peaking at the right time. Even though we lack depth, the players we have are very good. Our small size has worked as an advantage to a degree because it causes match-problems for the other teams bigs due to our quickness. Pierre can take over a game, and Pollard (we call him Beast Mode) is a very fun player to watch, plays much bigger than his size and has a nose for the basket. We can usually count on Pollard for 15 points or more a game, but if Sibert and Pierre are hitting shots, we are very hard to beat. That said, defense is the cornerstone of our program right now.

Really though? A couple of tight wins over St Bonny and RI. Loss to VCU. 1 point win over Boise State. And a solid win over Prov. Not sure I'd call that peaking. Guess we'll find out today.

1 point win over Boise St at home.

The best teams they've played, and beaten, this season are VCU and Providence.

They're good, and may be peaking at the right time, but we should be confident in our ability to win.

It'll be huge if Dayton can keep OU under 60 pts (Dayton's opponents avg 60.5). I think that definitely plays into Dayton's hands. If OU is up around 70 with a few minutes or less to go that will mean Dayton's defense fell short. It'll be worth keeping an eye on this. (Note- OU's defense statistically isn't in the top 50 which is 61.5 pts or less) My main concern is what I mentioned above and that's with OU's guards and their ability to finish. If Dayton finds a way to encourage OU's guards to drive to the basket, keep them off the 3pt line, and play quick help the helper defense WITHOUT fouling OU will struggle to score imo. Teams who have given OU a hard time are teams that can do that. That's why OU is hard to beat though... it's not easy to force teams off the 3pt line without giving up pts in the lane or at the FT line.
