Westmoore girls advance to State behind solid shooting
The Westmoore girls are going to the Class 6A state tournament as area champs after their 50-35 win over Deer Creek at Norman North gymnasium. Westmoore, powered by guard Jessi Murcer’s 21 points and a shooting barrage of 3-pointers by three other starters ran Deer Creek up and down the floor.
The game resembled more of a track meet than a basketball game, at times, with the first half being played in under 28 minutes and with no timeouts called. Westmoore led the entire game from the opening tip, and Murcer set the tone with her first shot that ripped the net as it went through.
In the first half, Deer Creek got a spark from its bench when Lauren Fields entered the game, helping them stop Westmoore’s running and slowing down their offensive attack. At the half, Westmoore led by only 8 points.
The second half started with Westmoore coming out flat and Deer Creek picking up the intensity, but it was short-lived, as Murcer, Ashley Gomez and Sydney Chastian hit 3-pointers at key times to stop Deer Creek runs.
By the fourth quarter, the Westmoore defense finally wore down Deer Creek.
Westmoore Coach Andrea Guziec praised her team’s all-around performance after the game. “I am most proud of our defensive effort and intensity,” she said. “Holding them to only 35 points is a great accomplishment.”
