Denzel Valentine is The AP Player of the Year

Russell Westbrook has a lot more assists than Steph Curry. I assume Westbrook will beat out Curry for MVP...lol...idiots

The name calling is unnecessary, but it is unfortunate that there was so much debate about the POY on an OU board. Most times, it's refreshing to be objective and open-minded. I just don't think this is one of those times. I would expect to go to an MSU board and read all their fans saying that the right choice was made...because Valentine had a great year. Of course, I also expect to read on an OU board that Buddy got robbed...because Buddy had a great year...and it's Final Four week...and no doubt members of Buddy's family and friends are reading these threads.

I just believe that our fan base should be doing everything right now to get behind everything pertaining to this year's Final Four team and its best player...rather than inundating us with favorable stats toward a rival player.

It's really only around 5 posters that do this crap. One of them was banned for a good while.

Curry also leads Westbrook in PER. By about three times the margin that Valentine lead(s) Hield.

And as far as I know, the NBA only has the one award. I bet if they had 5 or more, somebody other than Curry might win one of them.

PER is the most useful stat that's been quoted in this entire thread, and not a single person has acknowledged it. Wonder why that is? Nevermind, I know the answer to that.

Funny thing is that Hollinger no longer uses PER.

Doesn't use it where? That's where I got the NBA PER stats, from his site.

He doesn't have a website. He works for the Grizzlies. And he no longer uses PER. Not sure what is hard to understand.

Believe ESPN just took his formula, it's listed on the website.

Oh I know. It was developed over 10 years ago and ESPN still calculates it but he doesn't use it any longer in his operations at looking at players for the Grizzlies.

It should also be pointed out that besides its obvious flaws when looking at NBA players it is has an even bigger flaw in that it doesn't care about competition played, which isn't a big deal in the NBA but a significant problem in college hoops.

So what's a better stat to look at?

Just b/c it has flaws, doesn't mean it's not the best measurement currently around. Or certainly, one of the best. ESPN uses a few other similar measurements, and most of them shake out the same way.

Although it isn't perfect most stat nerds now use RPM. Again, this is best for the NBA because there aren't significant differences in opponents played like in college hoops. RPM like PER doesn't take opponent into account opponent strength in the equation.

OU played a significantly harder schedule according to both Sagarin and Kenpom. Find my post with the actual numbers (over 50 places tougher).

I believe Valentine was better during the time he played.

I also believe Valentine's time was cut pretty short right at the end of the year, which would make it hard for me to vote for him if I had a vote.

"This crap" meaning what? Isn't deciding the National Player of the Year entirely a matter of opinion? I would have voted for Buddy, but I see why they voted for Denzel. His numbers are ridiculous.

There is no right or wrong here.... it's an opinion.
