Dildy to Duke

The good news keeps on coming.

I realize people will spin this and continue arguing that all/most the assistants who have left have done so for promotions, etc. But whatever slim chance Moser has of building a respectable program decreases each time he loses a coach late in the offseason. KU has had tons of stability in their assistant coaches. Baylor, even before it became an elite program, kept a lot of their guys for many years. Meanwhile, we are a revolving door. Yay us.

But do you not think that guys on other staffs frequently get offers to go elsewhere? I mean, if OU assistants get offers after the two seasons we have just put together, doesn't it stand to reason that assistants at good programs are also getting contacted and offered jobs? And yet, many schools have continuity.

do i think guys on other programs at OU's level turn down offers to be HC's or go to kentucky and duke ...

no i don't ..

So you think that in 19 years, Jerome Tang never had an offer to be a head coach before finally getting the KSU job? Or that it took years and years for the other assistants on Baylor's staff to get offers to be head coaches at some low level school? You keep citing Duke and Kentucky. Those are only two of the guys we have lost.

If this is just the way things are, why didn't we lose coaches at this rate under our previous head coaches?

I just don't see how anyone can look at the constant turnover on the staff and not think that there is at least a possibility that maybe Moser isn't exactly a great person to work for.

This is a disaster for moser and OU.

The clock is ticking on Moser’s tenure already. This is a tough blow.

How many assistants has moser had since he’s been here?

Dindy has been the one consistent in the Moser regime to date.

Can't blame him for going to Duke at all but this stinks for OU basketball.

He's lost all three from the original staff, plus Brady resigned days before last season's opener. I think he has had other guys leave, too, it's hard to keep track.

Dildy spent his longest coaching career with Moser, 2013-16 at Loyola and 2021-23 at OU. He started his coaching career in 2008. He typically stayed 1-2 years in his other coaching jobs. His time with Moser is 2X the time at other places.
Wish him the best.

Let's be honest here, instead of restirring your disdain for Moser. The move from OU to Duke or Kentucky is a big step up for an assistant. It isn't like he is leaving for App State. If we pilfered an assistant from Duke or Kentucky for football you guys would think the guy is making a great career move.

If Dildy has his heights set on being a big school head coach it would be easier to accomplish from Duke or Kentucky than OU. Those are simply facts.

It may not be a great look for Moser in your eyes but this is a choice that would be a no-brainer for most coaches....and no,most programs don't have assistants getting calls from Duke and Kentucky. Use some reason on this one.

Ignore the troll. We can't treat his personality disorder over the internet. He genuinely needs professional help.

It sucks losing Dildy. I'd explain all the reasons this doesn't say anything negative about Moser, but everybody in this thread clearly understands already.

Fair to question moser's retaining asst coaches. But also objectively fair to say conclusively it was a no brainer to jump to duke. I'm not worried until we lose guys to lateral schools.

LOL right, because every assistant Moser has lost has gone to Duke and Kentucky. Nothing to see here. Things are just peachy.

Have you ever considered that perhaps Moser should realize that in trying to build a sustainable, winning program (which we had before he got here, but I digress), perhaps the best strategy isn't to hire guys who are looking to moving on immediately? Maybe hire some guys who actually want to stay in Norman rather than guys looking to use it as a stepping stone to a new job? Is that a difficult? Sure, if you have guys leave occasionally for head coaching jobs, that's fine. But if your entire staff is turning over virtually every year, how is that a good thing?

No one is saying it wasn't a smart move by Dildy. But it hurts our program to constantly lose assistants, regardless of why they are leaving. It's the same in any profession -- experience and continuity matter. If you run a law firm or an accounting office or a bank and constantly have new employees with no institutional knowledge or ties to the company, it takes time to get them up to speed.

I remember a lot of posters suggesting that a reason for the downturn during Lon's last five years was the loss of Hill and Henson. People felt that they never were the same after that. Lon was a very experienced and successful coach, so I don't know how much truth there was to that. But it seems weird that some of the same people are acting like there is nothing to worry about now, with far more turnover in a much shorter period.

It isn't unfair to point out a lot of guys leaving and use thar as your argument but you are smart enough to objectively see the difference between generally losing guys (which you are trying to make an umbrella statement about) and losing guys to Kentucky and Duke. You can separate those two from the equation. You could PROBABLY include guys who go from a support role to a on floor coach role too.

But I agree with you that it could look negative on Moser to an extent without looking at the whole picture, like where they are going and what role.

So, I agree with you to an extent. I just think some of those defection have less to do with Moser then you do.

I'll agree with the good for him, bad for OU consensus. But, I think it's important to note that we have no idea how many job offers Dildy (or those in his position) turn down or how many times blue bloods get turned down. I've yet to see a "he said no, so we're still looking" press release in an assistant coach search.

I think the trend of a revolving door in our coaches' offices is disturbing for a coach that, according to him, thrives on instilling a stable culture.

The weird part, to me, is why the market values our assistants so heavily, yet we're struggling so much on the court. Typically, people headhunt you for a promotion when you're doing a good job or showing progress.
