OK. The percentage of Jucos that end up as solid contributors for teams that finish in the upper half of major conferences is typically in the 17-20% range.

So, if the negative nellies want to say that a randomly selected Juco player has a slim chance of helping OU, that would be an accurate statement. Here is the problem with their argument. Bennett wasn't randomly selected. Kruger picked him on purpose.

What is Kruger's career batting average on jucos? That is the relevant stat. What was Kelvin's batting average with jucos? Pretty good I would think. How about Capel's? Ooops, probably not so good. The coach doing the picking makes the difference.

Bennett has skills and physical attributes that give him the chance to be a nice piece next season. I don't know if he will pass the toughness, will, and intensity test. We'll see.

If the practice reports i read on him are accurate, with the improvements he made from November to March, then the will wont be an issue. It will just be a matter if he can physically keep up in the Big 12 which I believe that Lon, with a full year to evaluate talent, would not have offered if he doesn't believe he could keep up. Unlike Arent, Bennett was not a last minute need a body now player

Just looking at Sampson off the top of my head I recall Everett, Taj Gray, McGhee, White, Brewer, Johnson, Erdman, Abercrombie, Avila, Selvy, Dietrik, and Ere all making pretty big contributions. I suspect I have forgotten a few names, especially in the 90s. (for those that say Juco is different now, I offer Baylor's Jackson as Exhibit 1)

If nothing else, Arent gave OU size in practice, especially two seasons ago. On top of that he gave some minutes his first season and rebounded a bit. He didn't play much this year but he had Osby, M'Baye and Fitz in front of him. There is not a lot of shame in not playing in front of those three guys.

There may be fewer JUCO's now, than 10 years ago, but there are still some that can contribute, and even a few that can start on good teams. I don't think LK is going to recruit too many JUCO's that he expects to start. The only reason Bennett/Avila have a shot this year is b/c M'Baye left unexpectedly.

As for forming an opinion on LK and his JUCO's, I'm going to wait until I see Bennett/Hamilton/Avila over the next year or two. Grooms and Arent were recruited under tough situations, and I'd say LK hit .500 on that pair, and Arent was injured most of his senior year, so he might have been able to contribute "something" otherwise. Either way, LK won't be in that recruiting situation very often, of just having to take bodies.

I dont think there's much doubt that he will play better defense than Fitz and probably much better so that whatever offense he provides will be a bonus.
