Do some guys think they can come in and walk over Capel?

Sampson's teams lost to Indiana State and Manhatten. The only teams that we probably should have beat in the first round. But Indiana State loss was not near as bad because we lost our best 2 guards. While I like winning and it's good for us to win a tournament game we would have got killed the next game and people would still be complaining about how we lost in the 2nd round that year. Capel's teams have had better talent and only went to the tournament twice.

That is the other thing, people don't want to look at the "reason" for some of the losses. OU beats ISU if we don't boot Raymond, or if Hollis doesn't get hurt in that game. How is that Kelvin's fault, especially Hollis' injury? OU beats Indiana if Q isn't hurt. OU might beat MSU for another Elite 8 if Eduardo doesn't get run over.

And yes, when/if Capel has a situation like above, I'll write it off too.

And anybody that tries to make THAT comparison is reaching. You really trying to compare the program when Kelvin took over vs when Jeff did? Even with the stupid slap on the hand probation, OU was 10x the program it was when Kelvin took over. With our run over Kelvin's twelve years, the practice facility, the Big 12, and everything else, Jeff walked into a MUCH easier situation. And the fact is, if Kelvin doesn't recruit Taylor Griffin, Capel might not have a single NCAA Tournament win at this point either.

I'll say it again.....I'd rather get to the tournament and get upset, then not make it. And it's not even close.

Billy's run and Kelvin's are very similar. Billy played for it all and Kelvin did not. Both had some bad tournament losses, which happens to all coaches. Facilities are much better now. Kelvin put us on probation, left for the Indiana job, and we lost two guys that are very good as seniors. To say that OU is 10x the program is diminshing both Billy's accomplishments and the impact Kelvin's wrongs have had on the program. Capel being able to get Blake, and no one knows for sure what would've happened if Kelvin would've still been here, completely changed the fortunes of the program. Period.

The first is probable, the second is pretty unlikely IMO. To blame that loss on Hollis Price's injury is IMO just not correct.

Hollis got hurt with a minute and a half left in the game and we were losing by two points at the time. That was a horribly coached game by Kelvin Sampson in which Indiana State put Matt Renn at the top of the key with the ball in his hands and Sampson had Heywood on him. Renn was abusing him over and over and Sampson never adjusted. It was also arguably a bad move to put Tim Heskett in the game to shoot Price's free throws. He had taken only 13 all season long and promptly missed them both. I say arguably because there weren't a lot of other options. Also I always thought it was weird that Coach Sampson let Hollis come back in that game after the injury. He was running around with one arm literally hanging from his side.

And if we're going to blame Capel for having recruited players that were dismissed from the team, we have to blame Sampson for recruiting JR Raymond.

Put me in the pro-Sampson and pro-Capel camp BTW.

See, this is what's unfair. You cite "reasons" why Kelvin's teams lose. But when someone does it for Capel, they are always "excuses."

Indian's point guard (Fife?) was also hurt that game. You have no idea if we win without Quannis's injury, you are just saying it to support a point you're making about Kelvin.

LOL.....I'm saying it b/c OU had been the best team in the country, with the best player in the country, for 2+ months. Then, all the sudden, both Q and Hollis get banged up and we lay an egg. It sucks. It's part of the game. But you can't call it a bad loss. We win the NC if Q is healthy. Period. We'd already stomped a mud hole in Maryland and KU.

This is just going to turn into a kelvin vs jeff thread and that's stuff needs to stop.

Not really. Billy had some terrible, terrible seasons, and lost some bigger upsets. Kelvin missed the NCAA ONE time in 12 years, and that team was one win from Dancing.

More excuses.

To the point of the OP, you can never lead effectively from a standing of friendship. You have to be their coach/mentor/leader not their friend. It's the same as teaching class or anything else. You can't be friends with those you have to judge, or discipline or make do something.

whether that's what's going on here I don't know.

I never got into the KS vs Non KS bull that flooded the boards, but I'm also smart enough to recognize that we have a remnant that wants exactly what you just said Nick......

Some cannot let it go........

LMFAO.....I did the breakdown already. Please stop with this crap.
