Man oh man what has happened to this program?

In the 80's, 90's and 2000-2007
(with the exception of 80-81)
We were never whipped like this. I always felt confident we would have a competitive team, we weren't afraid of any team or program. We are NU's BB program right now. OU was considered one of the top 3 teams in the league most years. No post play 2 out of the last 3 years? Is that correct?

I have zero confidence our current staff can get it done.

I guess you don't remember many of the games against Kansas over the years or last year against Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Baylor, UTEP just to name a few. People here have short memories.

To answer your question we haven't done a good job recruiting. It's really that simple.

Couple of bad circumstances that the program is rebounding from, but did the Virginia game prove any more than the Kentucky game?

What I saw in the Virginia Game was a team that gave all their effort the night before and didn't recover in time for The game. We were slower on defense and lethargic on offense IMO

West Virginia 92

Oklahoma 68.

In Oklahoma City. YWIA.

Get used to it with this bunch and it starts with the so-called head coach.

Oh and the original post is beyond laughable. Even the great Kelvin Sampson was on the wrong end of some humiliating losses.

Drew Lavender's freshman year I think their was one game we scored 37pts.

If I remember right that was a 45-37 loss to Purdue or something like that. I believe it was in that game Lavender went up for a 3 and couldn't get it off so he bounced it off Bookout's back then went for the layup, lol.

We lost by about 40 at UCONN in 2004.

I really don't think this team is all that bad...I just have no belief in the coaching whatsoever. I'm definitely supporting the players, but it just seems they aren't being coached to play consistent D...and a lot of the time, players that didn't play one game ago are being thrown into carrying large minutes (Switching out Newell for Blair who didn't even play the first two games). Everything seems uneven and done without much thought, strategy-wise. And no...Pledger isn't a PG. He's going to be a good player if given his natural role...we are losing a nice wing and gaining a completely unexperienced PG. I don't get it.

I agree that playing Pledger at the point is a mistake. It takes away from minutes that Blair and Newell need to figure things out. Especially Newell. He's basically not played at all the last couple of games.

i agree with some of your points. But I do think this team is bad. And some of the coaching moves make me scratch my head. Ill wait till the end of December before I say its the coaching or the players. I dont know if they are capable of putting together a string of good games. I would rather Capel throw some of these guys to the wolves and see if they can play. Pledger should in no way be our PG anymore than I should.

All hope is lost!

Gloom and doooooooom!!!!!!!!

I think my fear is that we may not get beat by 30 points in a few games like last season, but instead we'll lose a ton of games by 10-15 points. And that shows a lack of talent but an increase in trying harder.

I have high expectations for the basketball program, I just can't help it. There is no reason why OU basketball should be in the state it is right now. Give me a really good reason. However, I'm definitely down to giving Capel another year with better postplay to prove himself.

I don't think that is accurate. OU has not done a good job of keeping the recruits that sign. In less than 10 eyars OU has lost the following top 100 players: Lavendar, Foust, McKensie, Turner, Reynolds, K. Clark, Damion James, TMG, Tiny, WW, Neysmith, and Willis (I did not include Blake because he absolutely should have gone pro when he did). Most of those guys were lost in the last 6 years. Additionally, OU has lost several other recruits like Maze and Pattillo. Some of those guys may have been overrated coming out of high school but that is way too many recruits to lose to transfer, release, grades, etc. Perhaps a few needed to leave but you can't lose guys like that unless you recruit like Kansans and I don't even think KU lost that many guys to the NBA or other reasons early.

What is OU's identity under Capel? Does anyone know what his preferred style of play is?

I don't really care where our recruits are ranked. The fact is that our recruits since Capel outside of a few haven't done all that much. I don't follow recruiting so I don't care about rankings. Fact is that recruiting since Capel has been here have lead to players that weren't all that good, or the numerous guys that have left early for whatever reasons.

Im not really a gloom and doom guy, but we dont have an elite player, we are young, we have no size underneath, and have no identity. This team is more competitive than last years, but that isnt saying much. If this team would sell out to play D and rebound, id feel better, but we have too many lapses in both of those areas. We are not talented enough offensively to get away with that.
