Anybody else catch the Duke-Belmont game? Was it just me or did Capel draw up the clinching 3 pointer by Dawkins to make 75-71 with 16 seconds? Seems like I saw him grab the clipboard from somebody and barking orders, surprising to say the least. I couldn't tell if coach K wanted him to do that or not, but it seemed tense on the bench the rest of the night. Maybe sportscenter will replay it, was I the only one who noticed?

F Capel. That guy set OU back by a decade.

I don't believe this story.

There's no way Jeff Capel coached a team to run a play.

Some of you need to take a laxative.... a very strong laxative....:facepalm:facepalm

Sorry he would be way down on a long list.

The sad part is I'll bet anything that after Capel learns under Coach K for a couple years he'll become a really good coach.

That's a theory I can accept. I think we know now that Capel was not ready to be the head coach at OU, or any other major university for that matter. Administration and Xs and Os from the bench were not among his strengths. Even the region of the country worked worked against him. I also believe he could have done a better job of surrounding himself with a solid staff of assistants, although it's possible he simply refused to listen to advice.

Capel is where he needs to be right now. He certainly talked about Duke and Coach K enough while he was at OU. Hopefully, he'll learn from his mistakes and be better for it someday.

I don't believe that for one second. Capel has had plenty of time to "learn to coach". He played for Coach K. Had some good assistant jobs. His father was a coach. He was a head coach before OU and at OU.

Some people just don't get it. Capel will likely improve, but it'll have more to do with him growing up (and older), then any knowledge he acquires at this point.

on a side note... did anyone notice a top 25 ranked UCLA squad lost at home by double digits to Loyola Marymount???

Knowledge and experience are interchangeable. Everyone learns through experience and from people who have been there before.

That is, if Capel is the type who will accept advice from someone else? That's an unknown at this point. But I don't think there is any doubt that, while he had plenty of opportunities to learn as a player, as an assistant, a head coach at VCU and from his father, he was not prepared to be the head coach at OU. You and a few others tried to tell us that five years ago and we didn't listen.

That's just it, I don't think the things that made Capel a bad coach are things he didn't know. I think he made/makes choices to coach/recruit a certain way. He is making that choice, knowing the alternatives. He doesn't need to learn not to recruit talented players that have issues, he simply needs to not recruit them. He doesn't need to learn to not chase the top 5 recruits, he needs to make the conscious decision to be smart about it, cut his ties, and have good backup plans. He stated from day 1 he wanted to play like Duke. He wanted to turn the guys loose to do as they please on the court. He didn't want a structured offense. That is a conscious decision, even though most would agree that unless you always have the better talent (Duke, NC, UK, KU, UCONN), that is probably not a successful formula. He doesn't need to "learn" that being buddy-buddy with your players is probably a losing formula. He has to make the conscious decision to be more of a coach.

While I agree that Capel could, and probably will, improve on some of the x's and o's stuff, his biggest issues were conscious decisions that he was making. He has to let go of that if he ever gets another HC job at a school like OU. You cannot coach and recruit to OU like you do at Duke. It doesn't work.

This is just my opinion, of course.

How many of coach K's assistants/players have become successful head coaches at other places? Capel is no different than any of those, and won't benefit from further experience as a dook assistant......IMO!

True. When the initial hire was made, I was a HUGE fan of it, but I didn't know much about Capel as a game day coach. I knew he was young, black, had coaching experience, played for Coach K at Duke, and had a father with a basketball background. I thought the best way to get OU to the next level was possibly to hire a guy like Capel. So I was wrong about that.

But you are right, once he got to campus and started coaching, I saw things I didn't like. I hate that I was right about it, b/c it hurt our program. But we're on the right path right now. LK is going to do good things here. I really believe that.
