Dumb question, but I'll ask anyway

Any chance that Charles Tapper could join the basketball team after OU's football season is over tomorrow night?

Stoops has said in the past he would be willing to let one of his players play both sports. Yes, I know how often he's said it, but it never seems to happen for some reason.

Tapper said in the article below that basketball is his first love. Kruger's team needs depth inside in the worst way. Seems to me this would be the perfect time for Bob to step up to the plate and give one of his fellow coaches an assist.

It's also important to note that Tapper is no slouch as a basketball player. I couldn't find his high school stats, but he was a power forward on Nike's Baltimore Elite AAU team in 2012. That, alone says something about his ability as a PF.

Doubt it. Stoops says that all the time, but it almost never happens. Jones that played baseball being about the lone exception, I think, and he didn't do much in football.

It would just be really tough for him to come in now, and get into basketball shape, and to learn enough of what we do to help more than what we have. Also, I doubt Stoops wants to risk an injury to a young star on the DL.

I wouldn't even want Tapper to play. A kid that is lifting every day and not shooting and also is not in 'Basketball' shape, is most likely not going to be able to bring anything to the table.

I don't think he would be playing a lot of minutes and wouldn't be shooting much. It would probably help to have a big body to help with defense and the boards. Spangler needs some help inside. Gosh, it would have been nice to have Edson Avila.

Tapper is probably the best returning player on the OU D. I'd say the chances are somewhere between 0 and .001 percent.

:facepalm

Forget Julius Peppers, Tony Gonzalez, Nate Robinson, Donovan McNabb and Charlie Ward.

Jim Brown. Not only as a senior was he the best college football player, he was an All-American in Lacrosse and second leading scorer on the Syracuse basketball team. He also ran track. Brown earned 6 letters in three seasons.

I keep saying Stoops has missed on some recruits with his restrictive attitude. Marcus Nash, who was permitted to tryout for the Tennessee basketball team, for one. Possibly, Robert Meacham, for two. Michael Bush, who was considered the best basketball player in Kentucky but, yet a better football player considered OU very strongly before opting to Louisville with a promise he could try out for the BB team. They let him try out but Louisville broke another promise of giving him a fair shot at QB.

Tapper is 6'4", he wouldn't be helping us in the post.

Tapper's bulk at 6' 4" 260 would make up for his lack of height, to some degree. Ernie Abercrombie, one of the best rebounders I have ever seen in a Sooner uniform, was listed at 6' 4-1/2 230. If Tapper is as good as advertised, he would at the least give us another big body and improve our post depth.

Not that it matters, because I knew when I asked the question that the chances of a football player, especially one who will be valuable to our defense next year, being allowed to play basketball is remote at best.

Brandon Jones didn't do much in football?

Tapper's future is obviously in football and considering he has limited experience playing the sport and in the weight room, he needs to stick with football

Marcus Nash is several years before Stoops was our coach.

Tapper could probably play basketball, but at this point it would be foolish to do so. With hard work and dedication he could become a first round draft pick in the NFL, but he's not there yet. Spending your springs pursuing a hobby is not the way to get there. I don't think he'll even consider it.

I know Jeffery Mead wanted to try to play multiple sports. Have no clue if he's good enough for basketball, though. Cody Thomas may have just been screwed by the Sugar Bowl. Still think he's the best QB prospect on campus, but can't imagine that job is open in the spring anymore. He could shift his attention to baseball full time.

At the end of the day, though, if you want to compete for playing time in football you aren't going to spend your spring playing another sport. Those spring practices are too important and your competition is going to be getting after it and impressing the coaches. Obviously not an issue for a starter like Tapper, but I really don't think you'll ever see a football player play for the basketball team again. Only sport I can see it happening with is if we ever end up with an olympic class track guy.
