Once he got an extension and pay raise, the wait and see mentality no longer applies. He has a big time contract at a big time school and results are a must. I have numerous issues with Capel as coach and most have been discussed on this board, but what gets me the most is the lack of fundamentals. Against Nebraska it was screening. We can't set screens on offense and we can't beat a screen on defense. Defense has been on a downhill slide since Capel took over. Hell, I probably could count on one hand the number times we have scored on an inbounds play.

You know I can remember John Blake's final year and people saying he should have another year. Being a youngster, I almost started to believe it. Boy, am I glad OU made a change.
I know and I think just about everyone is glad we did make the change back then. Except possibly Blake's family.

I say "stay." But what would you expect from someone who is starting to look forward to being called an idiot at least a couple of times a day?

You need to report when other posters call you an idiot. I wouldn't stand for it.

Either you are a genius or you aren't, blah blah blah, so please don't make demands of others because of your own self-loathing. Whoever made this thread clearly would rather have someone tell them what the future will be than to be a part of the decision-making process with all the uncertainty and responsibility that comes with this weighty role.

I for one support a woman's right to choose, but dislike a woman who doesn't have the wisdom and strength to be able to change her mind if new truths present themselves. Patience m*f*ers, you aren't gonna change the world today but don't ignore reality if it changes lanes on you tomorrow.

At 6:30 Saturday morning (Central Time), the count is about where I would expect it...somewhere between 60-65% in favor of Jeff staying...hardly a ringing endorsement. I'll reiterate what I said earlier in that there really isn't that much of a difference in perspective between the posters voting to "stay" or "go". If we're anywhere near .500 at this point next season, I doubt you'll find a single poster voting to "stay" beyond 2012. Assuming Jeff is not let go, he's going to need a huge spring in getting his top two targets (Guerrero and Jurick) so we can compete for a top-5 conference finish next year.

I'm for the Oklahoma Sooners. I like Capel as a person but I still don't think he is a top notch basketball coach. I notice way too many mistakes with his in game coaching. In my opinion, he needs to bring in a veteran assistant coach to help him. I'm willing to give him one more year but he must bring in some talent. If not, we are going to be in the same boat next year. We need size inside, a good PG, and another shooter/scoring guard. If we don't make the NCAA tourney next year, Capel is obviously gone. Basketball is not like football. You can rebuild pretty fast if the coach is known and can bring in the recruits. It's not like Capel has not had his chance. Five years is plenty of time. It also has to be concerning that the program during his tenure has not had any stability. For people that say well look what he has had to work with, well, he recruited those guys and should have known the possibilites.

Why? Are you an idiot? If not (and I would say you are not) then why would you remotely care what some faceless stranger on the Internet said ?

Call me hopelessly old fashioned, but you shouldn't call other people on a message board an idiot because of common courtesy, if for no other reason. It's one thing to refer to someone like the Bama fan who poisoned the Auburn live oaks an idiot. It's quite another thing to call someone you are having a conversation with an idiot.

I don't see any point in adding my two cents when Chiefdaddy said it for me.

I'm all for giving Capel another season, and I will cheer louder than anyone if he is successful. But, we I don't see a dramatic improvement next year that includes being a legitimate contender for a Big 12 title followed by a birth in the NCAA tourney, I will be calling for his head.

High expectations with a harsh outcome if he doesn't meet those demands? Not as far as I'm concerned. Six years is more than enough time to prove himself. And don't bother pointing to OU's elite eight finish in 2009. I want proof that he can coach without Blake, Taylor and two solid players Kelvin Sampson signed in T Crock and AJ. Frankly, far too many Capel recruits have been busts or head cases to suit me!

Based on those 2 statements, why does Jeff deserve to be back next year? At this juncture, can the program afford to waste another season because Jeff is a nice guy?

To be honest, I'm not sure he "deserves" another year? Three losing seasons out of five should be enough for any coach. But, unlike you (;)), I'm a realist who knows when he's beating his head against a stone wall in trying to effect change. Capel will be at OU next season no matter what we do or think.

I can live with that and continue to support him as our coach. Beyond that, however, I will refuse to accept mediocrity and poor performances as if they are part of OU's great tradition in basketball. That IS NOT who we are!

As a longtime “sunshine pumper” ... I greatly hoped that Jeff Capel would succeed and take the program to even greater heights than before. It ain’t happened.

In five seasons so far, Coach Capel is 36-39 in Big-12 regular season games. Even with the advantage of having Blake Griffin for two seasons, Coach Capel is not able to go .500 in the Big-12 conference.

Now, the Oklahoma basketball program is at the point where, we the fans, hope the team can make “drastic improvement” next season just to get to a 9-9 (.500) conference record.

In other words, The Oklahoma basketball program is now mediocre.

The proof is in the pudding. When it comes to coaching a big time basketball program, Coach Capel has proven that he is nothing special. There are lots of average basketball coaches out there, and Jeff Capel is one of them.

I am for the University of Oklahoma. The University of Oklahoma can do better. The University of Oklahoma deserves better. This is an easy call. We need a new coach now.

I'll take the tall cool one and pass on the game of horse.

I always knew you were a company man. How long did you work in the athletic department? lol

Clap! Clap!
