Biggest defeat in Final Four history

Most losses in program history

Biggest collapse in college basketball history...one seed to out of the tourney punctuated by a complete collapse for your 6th straight loss.

How many embarrassments can this program withstand??

Totally agree. For those reasons I would fire Lon. And I genuinely like him and think he’s a good coach.

Lon is too good of a guy to be fired mid season, but he should be.

He has to be fired at the season without question.

I really like Lon and respect him not only as a person, but as a coach. But the last two years have been a cluster-eff in multiple areas. His tenure at OU ties his longest tenure at any school he has coached. He should not be fired....he should be given an opportunity to step down, but I don't think that is appropriate just yet. I give him one more year, but if we see the same mistakes, lack of effort, and overall dysfunction....then I may lean towards termination.

imagine what sampson would have done with this lineup.
I think we would be much better.
And if guys weren't giving the effort, lazenby and polla would be playing and we would be better off with defense and effort

Some more history....

104 points is the most an Oklahoma team has ever given up in regulation of a Big 12 game.

Sampson cooked his own goose. Polla and Lazenby are where they belong on the bench. Probably good practice players but that is all.

Ironic to see all the posts pining for Sampson, who came in for relentless criticism throughout his tenure in Norman.

fair weather fans did not like him. long time fans did

I was a Sampson fan (though not a fanatic like some were). He was / is a great coach who has Houston right where I thought he would have them by Year 4. That said, I wouldn't call everyone who didn't like him a "fair-weathered fan". People are going to have their own personal views about any coach...doesn't make them right or wrong.

What I liked most about Coach Sampson is that the team almost always gave it their all. And on games they didn't, he made things so miserable for them that it wasn't an on-going problem save for his last year. Also, the team went to 11 NCAA Tournaments in 12 years. No other OU coach can even come close to 90+% (and probably never will). With that last-year exception, he squeezed the most wins out of the talent he had...gave the fans a lot to root for!

Besides the probation, some weren't Sampson fans because of the team often wearing down come March. When OU was not seeded #1 or #2, our NCAA Tournament record was a worse-than-mediocre 4-9. Of our 11 NCAA Tournament losses altogether, only 3 (1998, 2000 and 2001) were nail-biters. In fairness, you can't expect every fan (fair-weathered or otherwise) to be on board with that.

They need a new voice.

This thing has run its course.
