Flopper to the Celtics with the 6th Pick

lol

I'm not Smart fan, and I didn't want my C's to draft him, but to say he isn't a top 6 (or very close to it) prospect in this draft is crazy. And you are going against every NBA scouting service also. Every mock. Every prospect ranking list. All had him in the top 4-7 or so.

I am. Smart is not going to be an NBA All-Star in my opinion. He might have a nice long NBA career but he is never going to be a difference maker in the NBA in my opinion. I would have traded down or passed and been ridiculed by the "experts".

If this is that surprising to anyone then they havent been paying attention to the draft.

1. it is silly to say he's not a top-10 pick. I will trust the opinion of EVERY NBA source because they all say otherwise. Personally I dont like him because he played at OSUx and he IS a flopper. But that doesn't mean he's not talented.

2. I dont know what Ainge's "plan" is but this move has been predicted for weeks. I also assumed Rondo was gonna be traded but I guess not. That does seem stupid.

3. as an aside ... many teams had Smart rated ahead of Exum.

Again, you are correct as well. GMs and NBA sources never miss on draft picks and they certainly never pick a player too high. Just never happens. Never. They are just player picking machines. Completely mistake free.

NBA ready body

People say this like it is such a good thing. I am not sure that is the case with a 6'2" player. Smart over powered a lot of guys in college and high school. I think that is going to stop in the NBA or be reduced significantly. Taking away or diminishing is biggest advantage doesn't seem like a positive to me.

He is talented, nobody is saying that he isn't, I just don't see how his game translates to the NBA where everybody is physical and everybody is at least as quick if not quicker than he is.

To me it was obvious when the Piston passed on Carmelo and took that guy from Europe they were screwing up. To me it was obvious when Portland took Greg Oden over KD they were screwing up. To me it is obvious that Marcus Smart is not going to be a difference maker in the NBA. Perhaps I will be wrong. I certainly have been in the past

Don't mistake this as me saying he has some kind of advantage. All it means is teams do not have to wait on a player to develop the strength and power to compete in the league early. He'll compete but he won't be able to physically overpower quality people in the league at any point in his NBA career like he did at times in college. My point about this guy is he needs more to his game to warrant this high of a pick. Competitor, mature body, good defender. Ok that's all well and good but can he guard NBA talent without flopping? Can he make people pay with his jump shot when they don't contest on pick and roll? Can he knock down open 3's? Can he get into the lane and finish? Can he keep his composure over an 82 game schedule when the losses pile up? Will he be receptive to coaching? Can he truly develop any more than what he is right now? Too many questions for a guy at this draft slot in this draft at that position. BTW, I think Napier is the best point/lead guard in this draft and, I know, all the experts thought otherwise.

I know exactly what it means. I just don't think it is positive when you are talking about a 6'2" draft pick. The reason is he demonstrated his superiority against guys that were not NBA ready. Now if you are a PF or C, I think it is a huge deal to be able to step in play in the NBA right awy.

That makes this pick crazy then if you ask me. Seriously, what are they going to do with Rondo AND Smart?

Teams do need backup guards, you know?

Plus, regardless of what the C's say, Rondo is likely on the block. Maybe he stays, maybe he goes, maybe he doesn't go until later next season. But there is nothing wrong with having a solid/cheap backup pg.

So if he never develops into an NBA All-Star, it was a bad pick?

I don't agree with that at all.

I don't know, maybe we're all biased by him being OSU, I'm getting vehemently slammed on twitter for pointing out his flaws. Is the hype really that strong or are we not seeing his greatness? It's perplexing.

Well I was trying to list some attributes I feel he possesses. What you take as a positive or negative is up to you. My point about being him being physically ready is made when you compare him to, say Elfrid Payton, who will need to develop some. I agree with you to a degree though.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Trust me, I've spent the last month on a Celtics' board telling them I hope we pass on Smart. BUT.....if I step back and attempt to take my rose colored glasses off, I don't think there is any doubt Smart has talent. I think worst case is he develops into an adequate starter at pg. Best case, a fringe All-Star type. I don't think he'll be a star, or a perennial All-Star. But with good coaching, I can see him turning out okay, even if he never shoots it better (though I think he will).

The said during the draft last night that when they looked at his metrics (in depth stats), he was easily the most predictable kid coming out of this draft. Just about everybody outside of OU fans thinks this kid is going to be just fine in the NBA.

Right, which is fine, I've got nothing against the kid, I think we all just got tired of the relentless Marcus Smart hype machine. No matter what happened he got pumped up like he was the next Michael Jordan. If he had a bad stat night, it was "JUST IGNORE THE STAT SHEET AND LOOK AT HIS INTANGIBLES!". If he had a good stat night, it was "HE'S A STAT SHEET STUFFER!"

I don't disagree. The focus that each telecast put on him last year was borderline ridiculous. I certainly won't argue that.

Smart has really upgraded his game this summer by watching the World Cup. Those dudes are on a whole different level when it comes to taking a dive.

I think Smart has a chance to be an Andre Miller type of player, never going to be a superstar but could be a quality guard for a long time in the NBA. Whether he was worthy of being the 6th pick I don't know but there weren't a bunch of other guys that were available that were decidedly better than Smart.

Totally agree. Tired of all the hype and fluff. Looking forward to a college basketball season without him.

Funny. I like this comparison, except Miller is a better shooter than this guy will ever be. Miller was the 8th pick in his draft. Like I said, this guy was a 10-14 pick in this draft, IMO.
