STEPHENVILLE — This one was for all the marbles. Twice the No. 1 and No. 2 teams had met in the regular season when Godley and Brock battled, and each shared the top spot during those two matchups. The teams split the games, and it was fitting that the third and final duel between the two teams came in the regional finals at Tarleton State University on Saturday afternoon.
Brock prevailed 43-33 to punch a ticket to the state tournament in Austin.
Brock broke the ice early when Savannah Fisher drilled two 3-pointers to give the Lady Eagles an early 6-0 lead. They used their stifling defense to hold the Lady Cats scoreless for the first five minutes.
Godley’s Anna Perez got the Lady Cats on the board with a nifty jump shot to make it 10-2, and then Brady Sanders drilled a 3-pointer off a Brock turnover to make it 10-5. The comeback continued for Godley as the Lady Cats cut the lead to 12-9, but Perez went down with a leg injury and didn’t return for the remainder of the half.
Brock extended its lead to 16-9 after a basket from Amy Henard, and two free throws from Kambrie Shoush before Sanders banked in a 3-pointer to cut it to 16-12.
Brock’s Kami Kole then made a tough jumper to give the Lady Eagles an 18-12 advantage. Sanders then added two free throws and another 3-pointer to bring Godley to within 18-17 with 2:34 left.
Sanders continued to carry the Lady Cats from the beginning of the third period. She drilled another long 3-pointer, and then banked in a shot from the foul line to give Godley a 22-18, completing an amazing comeback. With 6:39 remaining in the third period, she had 20 of Godley’s 22 points. The other two belonged to Perez, who continued to be sidelined with her leg injury.
After another Sander’s 3-pointer, Kole put in two free throws to bring Brock back to within two at 25-23 with 3:24 remaining. Kole forced another steal, and scored on the ensuing fast break to tie the game before drilling another jumper to put Brock on top 27-25.
But, on Godley’s next possession, Sanders hit yet another 3-pointer to give the Lady Cats the one-point edge. They led, 28-27, entering the final quarter.
Henard gave Brock the lead back in the first few minutes of the fourth, and Parliament added another jumper along the baseline to extend the lead to 31-28.
Maelan Brown split her two attempts at the line, and Kole scored again for Brock to extend the lead to 33-29.
Kole continued to carry the Lady Eagles down the stretch, and Brock tried to lock down on Sanders to preserve the lead as time ticked down.
Shoush added two free throws to give Brock a 39-33 lead as the game began to slip away from Godley in the final minute.
Kole led Brock with 18 points. Sanders was the high scorer for Godley with 29
