Future Sooners

It was reported last week on Texashoops.com that Kamy Cole's basketball coach at Brock, Ship Townsend, was leaving Brock to become the head coach at Argyle High School. Argyle is a 4A school that is just 2.6 miles from Liberty Christian (Whitney Hand and Nicloe Kornet's high school).

According to Kamy's mom Kay, Kamy won the mile run at the Regional yesterday with a time of 5:24. Congradulations to Kamy as she goes for the Gold again. :chestram2:
She also reported that Kamy and Peyton Little are both good friends on the Cy-Fair AAU team and she too hopes that Peyton comes to OU.

Thanks for that link, some awesome pics of Kamy her teammates, family and my favorite is the one of Kamy with Blake Griffen.

Good Info, however can someone tell me why these two (Manning and Kamy) are not listed in the hoopzgirl (sp) top 60 and yet the other three who I guess we want are??
Kornet #27, Swan#30, and Little #41. I know the services do not know everything but just wondering??

It may be a little more clear when Hoopgurlz expands their list to 100 players. A player who is ranked 41st for example may have the very same numerical score as a player ranked 75th. What that tells me is there may be very little difference in ability between those two players.

Having those two players in the rankings makes sence to me, not having Cole or Little doesn't. Plus they forgot to list #53 Higgins as being commited to Baylor, but it's good to see other ratings so thanks for the post Norm.

This is from Maddie that she posted on a blog:

God, God, family, friends, and basketball are my life. I will be playing basketball at the University of Oklahoma. I am very thankful for the life i live and live each day to glorify my father in heaven. I am working each day to fully utilize the gifts and talents that i have been blessed with, to maximize the platform given to me by God. Only He knows what He has planned for me but i will make sure to do everything possible to accomplish all that he has intended for me. No one will get in the way of my dreams. I WILL MAKE IT.

Peyton Little a soph. at Abilene Wylie is another player we should be after IMO. She led her team to a runner-up finish in 3A. Averaged 27 ppg and 9rb.
She is fast too, her cross country time is 14:56 and she was the top performer in 3A as a freshman in the 200M in track. She is very similar to Kamy Cole in speed and scoring.
This was posted on last season's Future Sooners on 4/17/10.

This year she led her team to the 3A State Championship scoring a tournament record 42 points so I thrilled that she came to visit OU. Hopefully Sherry and our players can stay in touch with her and sell her on coming to Norman.

A couple of observations I've made regarding Maddie and Kamy are worth repeating here.

First, both players are listed as Top 100 Watchlist players, meaning both are being seriously considered for inclusion among the top 100 players when the list is expanded from 60. And as far as I'm concerned, except for a very few elites at the top of the rankings, for the rest of the elite 100 players, discipline, determination, and coaching are the ultimate arbiters for just how good these players are going to become. Sherri's repeatedly shown that she can take top 100 talent and create an All-American with the right player. Does anyone seriously doubt that Aaryn has what is needed to be one of the best in the country? Not me.

Also, both players are more noted at this time for their defensive capabilities, while both have competent offensive games that could become significantly better with just a few adjustments in their games. I've noticed that offensive talent tends to have a bit of an advantage in the HoopGurlz recruiting rankings, probably because it's easier to identify and quantify in team viewing events than the technique skills that players demonstrate on defense.

And I'm really happy to see that Sherri seems to be putting an emphasis on defensive talent, while not ignoring offensive potential. It will pay big dividends with this team over time. OU's had a reputation for being too soft on defense, particularly on the perimeter, but I think those days are just about over.

I'm a BIG fan of DEFENSE FIRST. Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer, Sampson and Stoops (who seems to be getting back to it) all emphasized the critical importance of good defense. And for reasons we are all familiar with. It has seemed to me that we have been getting away from playing and emphasizing really good defense. I think of the games when that could have won the game for us. I hope Sherri emphasizes it more.

Very good post!

On the football side (not that it's relevant), it's pretty hard to characterize Switzer, who made his reputation hanging half a hundred on people with the wishbone as a defense first coach.

As for men's basketball, Billy Tubb's teams were a lot more fun to watch than Kelvin Sampson's.

As for women's basketball, when we talk about who we want to sign in recruiting, I don't see anybody touting these players' defensive prowess.

There are some and actually, that is one of the first things I look for when I read about a recruit. I don't think that Jeffcoat was recruited for her offensive firepower and neither was Zander. Defense and rebounding is what got them noticed.

1974. The Sooners outscored their opposition 473-92 that year. I saw eight of those games in person, and was impressed enough to think that it was likely one of the best football teams in college history. Most of the points scored against OU were against third team players or less after the Sooners had accrued a lead of 35 points or more. They were much more dominant defensively than the actual numbers show.
