GAME 25 - OKLAHOMA (12-12) vs GEORGIA (17-7) 2:30pm CST on SEC NETWORK

The buyout at the end of the season is $5.3M.

And that is my biggest concern. With an easier schedule in the back half, can he get enough wins to be "respectable" in Denny's eyes, with having some likeability and energy? And if the team continues to play hard? I think it has to get in the tourney to salvage his job, and that probably means 7-8 more wins, or 4 in Nashville. Both scenarios almost impossible. But does he do "just enough"? Not saying he deserves it- he doesn't- but does a new AD come in and fire him 3 weeks into the job?

Because if he does, he's going to have to find a way to raise $5.3M to buy him out, likely $4-5M for a new coach, increased $$ for staff, and a higher NIL budget for a new coach, probably demanding at least $6-8M. A lot of money to raise for a guy less than a month on the job.

The flip side is he probably will have an even more difficult time raising money/NIL money if he keeps him. I think PM has lost the BMDs and fans' support, regardless of what Denny may think or any grace period he could be willing to give. The NC State example applies perfectly here- don't let one month influence five years of evidence.

moser's contract will likely be paid out over time.....not a lump sum payment.
and they won't pay $4-$5mil for a new coach/staff.

Yeah, I know the buyout isn’t paid in a lump sum, but he still has to look at it as such as he needs commitment for the entirety of the funds to be paid. And Moser, IIRC, is 14 of 16 in pay in the SEC. Much like NIL, if you want to move to the top half of the league, a new coach would be on the $4M range, unless you’re content on competing with South Carolina and MSU.

Or content on bringing in an unproven assistant coach. Even guys like Schwartz, Skinn, Calhoun, etc from mid majors will be in demand from P4 jobs and bring $4M or so with aggressive NIL and staff demands.

And if we aren’t willing to pay $4M or so or what it takes to get a top coach, even if it is a mid major, than what are we doing pretending to be serious.

Don’t fire PM just to get a Kellen Sampson or Calin Hartman for $3-3.5M. No thanks.

My fear as well… and honestly I could see the new AD giving him a “reset” year…IF, moser goes .500 rest of the season

I’m with you here. I think 17 wins and his job is safe. But, he’s never ever won more than three conferences games in a row so I doubt they get to 17. I think they lose to Tennessee and go on another losing spell. Maybe beat Missouri at home and that’s it.

What if ou sneaks into the NIT and wins it? It shouldn’t matter but seems more likely than making the real tournament.

i am normally pro playing more basketball .. but I am in 100% agreement with you in this case ..
I think playing more games made sense in the past, when teams generally returned more players and hoped to use the NIT to build some momentum for the next season. But it just makes no sense now, especially for a power conference team. When you miss the tourney four times in five years, you need to just go away lol.

AND it gives your players more tape to shop to other suitors (to the extent we care to keep any of them). There's really no incentive to playing in any tourney but the NCAAs.

I'm the LAST guy that would say turn down more ball games, but here I am saying it.

With the upheaval in the administration, who knows how OU views the Moser situation or whether the team's play the rest of the year will effect their decision making. However, under the current portal/NIL system, we are plainly going to be dealing with almost complete roster makeovers every year, just like all but the most wealthy programs (which ours isn't).

You have already seen what the NIL situation has done to our depth at OU in football. Rotational kids want to start and maximize their income for the few years they have. Can't really blame them. In theory, Rogers, atack, Reid, Forsythe, Mayfield and Nwonkwo would be a good starting point for a team to build around for a new coach or Moser for that matter. But, who knows if they will be here regardless of who the coach is.

Frankly, I am starting to lose interest in college basketball. At least in the NBA, a player stays on a teams for a few years. College basketball is quickly becoming nothing more than going out to the 12th street gym and watching pickup games. Hardly know who is on the court, same occasional effort, no loyalty -- you just play for anyone that will pick you up and let you play, and no fouls called (same as SEC anyway).

Money and greed destroys most things, I guess amateur sports is going that way.

It is no longer amateur sports when it’s your job and they pay you to so it. Schools need to spin off their sports programs into a business that they own controlling interest in before they can do what the pro businesses do (enforce contracts, etc). Not sure they can do that and keep the donations flowing into the schools. Catch-22 likely will prevent fixing the current system because of money.

I want them off of the campus too. Drop the student athlete mirage all together. Let it be a little sponsored sports team and be done with it
