I've been thinking this for a couple of years now. From top to bottom, recruiting, coaching and the entire enchilda, I think Gasso is the best coach at OU.

I agree. Two national championships speaks for itself.

I have said all along that she is the best head coach on campus.

Gasso is great, but the men's gymnastics program is second to none & has mor national championships. The women's gymnastics program is also top 5 in the country.
PD

We do have great gymnastics teams. However only a few universities have gymnastics programs whereas there are over 300 schools that have softball. In my opinion it is much harder to win a NC in a sport that competes with more than 300 schools vs a sport that competes with less than 20 programs.

As I remember, at one year's world championships, four of the US's top six men came from OU. That's a pretty strong program.

I think both Gasso and Williams merit consideration, and I doubt that either worries about which is ranked #1. They are probably just happy that someone notices them.

The way some of you guys criticized Coach Gasso for holding Turang and third the other night, this thread's a little surprising :ez-laugh:

Seriously, though, I believe Coach was right to hold Turang at third. A good throw gets her at the plate in spite of her great speed. And Gasso had no reason to believe the big hitters wouldn't get Brianna home from third. Also, I'm sure she was confident her team would score some runs in regulation – after all, they average eight runs per game. Just saying…

By the way, I agree that Coach Gasso is at or near the top when it comes to OU coaching excellence.

In my opinion, there was at least a 90% chance Turang would have been safe at home. But, that's what makes for good message board discussions. :)

If you'll agree to 85%, Norm, I'll call it square. :ez-laugh:

No coach is perfect, and no one gets the call right all the time, and that includes our own great coach Patty Gasso.

Having said that, (and which has already been noted on this thread), Gasso probably wished that she'd had a do-over on the third-base call, along about the top of the eleventh inning Monday night.

By saying that she should have not held Turang up at third, was someone saying that Gasso was a bad coach?

I don't think so.

Anyway, all's well that ended well, despite the plethora of armchair coaches.

PMA, that's what it was! PMA (You know, Positive Mental Attitude, not that other PMA)...:woot

LOL

:facepalm

I knew that I had read a few months ago there were less than 20 NCAA schools that offer gymnastics (actually, I believe the number is 15 for the men). If a couple of more schools drop the sport, some have concern that gymnastics will be dropped completely as a NCAA sport. But, there are 62 women's gymnastics programs still in existence according to the article I read. Some schools seem to be dropping the sport every year. If I had read about the number of women's programs I had forgotten it. I was just thinking that both were less than 20 which isn't correct.

BlackwellSooner, that was a tongue-in-cheek comment by me; no, I wasn't accusing you, SoonerNorm or any of the others of calling Coach Gasso a "bad coach."

What I do notice quite often is a collective knee-jerk reaction to any coaching move/decision that doesn't work out well. But, hey, what good are fans if we can't be Monday morning quarterbacks?

When I disagreed with Patty, I certainly didn't mean any disrespect whatsoever. She is a phenomenal coach and we are very lucky to have her. Her girls are not only great softball players but they are getting it done in the classroom as well. Since she graduated college in 1984, I would assume she is in her early 50s. I hope she stays around several more years and I think she will. She seems to love being the coach at OU.

Gasso's salary has been increased from $215,000 to $350,000. She also can earn another $65,000 for winning her 3rd national championship.

Gasso is a very good coach.

One of my favorites is Kindler.

Joe P has done a good job of upgrading coaching.

Hope the baseball guy turns out to be a winner.
