Geno talks religion

Thanks for posting that Norm. Something about Geno rubs me the wrong way but I am with him on this. It reminds me of Carlin's joke about athletes giving glory to a deity when they win but never blaming him if they miss shots, drop passes, etc.
I went to a Catholic high school so I was respectful when the team did the Lord's prayer before and after our games since I choose to attend that particular institution (US Grant soccer was poop in the mid 90s). But someone's relationship with God should be the least of coach's concerns.

On this topic, Geno is my kind of guy. Sherri not so much.

Geno is just an outstanding coach. He get's the full picture.

My philosophy would be in line with Geno's. I don't think I've ever heard Sherri state hers.

I haven't heard any statement from Sherri either. But, it is my perception that the Women' Basketball program is an overtly religious group. Is it possible that my perceptions have failed me once again?

Kinda like Patty Gasso's group?

Thanks for posting that for me. Now I have an opinion. On this topic Geno is my kind of guy. Patty not so much.

I agree with Geno as well personally. My point is many are insinuating the same of Sherri as a big negative and we have Patty, a two-time NC winning coach doing the same thing and nothing is said.

It is a negative if a recruits religious disposition is a factor in Sherri's or Patty's recruiting decisions. Bringing in good character kids that can play is a must. Geno seems to have done pretty well without having to check many boxes past that.

+1

There is only one Geno.

I've only heard of one coach who has problems in this area and that's the KSU women's basketball coach.

Our society has become overtly secular. Many who despise religion exclude and demean those who have religious beliefs. For example, Gov. Cuomo saying there is no room for right to lifers in NY. These folks have no tolerance for people who don't share their views. (I'm pro choice, but I respect those who disagree with me for religious reasons) I despise intolerance of opposing views.

So while I agree with Geno, he's a wimp on this. He doesn't want to stand up for a coach who is taking crap from people who are intolerant, including his University President. If someone wants Jesus in his huddle and the players have no problem with it, why should anyone care. If a coach thinks God cares about the outcome of a sports contest, who cares. I think it has more to do with talent, preparation and execution, but who cares what the other guy thinks.

Dumb in America is exemplified by how decline in religion is parallel to decline in civility, tolerance and respect.

What did the coach really mean when he said I want Jesus in my huddle? Nobody asks that question. They assume it means that Jesus is on their side. I don't think so.

I think he meant he wanted players who exhibit the type of values found in Jesus. Values like honesty, determination, faith, compassion, humility and sacrifice. Winners have these traits.

Many of OU's athletes are openly religious. The FCA was founded in Norman. I'm stunned at how so many of you support Geno on this. I will re-iterate, he's demonstrated that he's a wimp. He's afraid of losing endorsements or whatever. I guarantee, John Wooden would never have said what Geno said, but then Geno is clearly no John Wooden despite his coaching success.

That can't be true. The decline of civility, tolerance, and respect can easily be attributed to those that claim to be the most religious.
