Giovanni McLean Update: He's a Sooner

Again, based on what? Woodard was up and down from three this year, but he still finished the year at a VERY respectable 37%.

Based on what I saw. Teams left Woodard alone on the perimeter kind of like they did with Sam Grooms. All of his 3's were set shots and he didn't create many shots off the dribble. He had to be wide open before he took a shot from the perimeter because it takes so much time to take a set shot. He doesn't have a jump shot. I honestly thought at the end of the year that teams didn't respect our post offense or Woodard. It put a lot of pressure on Buddy, Isiah, and Cam to carry the offense.

I also thought he got beat on defense a lot with guys taking him off the dribble. Of the 4 returning starters next year, I think Woodard is the most likely to get beat out.

Just my opinion, and you're entitled to yours.

Weird that we would push him ahead of the other JUCO guard, and now he might not even make it. Hopefully it'll work itself out quickly, either way.

I would hope that Lon has better than average confidence that he'll make it to campus. Otherwise, why take his commitment? Did this just pop up in less than a day since he committed? Weird...

(Saturday Morning, April 26, 2014) Based on everything I have read at multiple sites, this quote from the free Scout article seems to sum it up best:

McLean said he committed Friday morning, but he has not signed his letter of intent. He said he hopes to do that sometime next week. One of the issues could be what his exact eligibility status is. When asked how many years he still has to play, McLean said everybody is working hard to figure that out.

So, this comes down to the NCAA Clearinghouse process. McLean is reportedly academically eligible to play at OU. Based on the above quote, it is obvious that the OU coaching staff was knowledgeable that there was some risk related to the NCAA Clearinghouse process. Yet the coaches accepted the risk and offered McLean anyway. This indicates that the OU coaches believe that this kid can play, and he is worth the risk.

We aren't going to sign him. The NCAA is requiring him to sit out next year for some reason.

Is that confirmed vbdad? Or are you speculating and think that will be what happens? I sure hope he can come in and prove to be a good player for us.

If the Gio deal is actually falling apart, was Walker in town this weekend as scheduled?

I find it hard to believe that this staff would offer Gio and then cancel other kids visits in the event that Gio committed without doing their due diligence.

Where are you getting your information?? I'm not buying it. There isn't anything new that the staff would find out over the weekend, since no one in the NCAA works a lick over the weekend. Let's see how this plays out. I tend to be the pessimist in these situations though..since it seems like more often than not, they work against us!

James Hale has been all over this over on OUI and has done a good job researching but I'm not going to violate disclosing his premium information. Evidently they postponed Dinjiyl Walker's visit until early next week. Hopefully, they get some kind of ruling on Gio prior to Walker's visit. Everything is still up in the air, but OU knew there was some risk with getting Gio signed and cleared.

Been around these boards for a lot of years, and I can say Vbad and Coachtalk are usually pretty accurate when they report something......

Hale's most recent post on the topic sounds cautiously optimistic.

Hale is reporting this kid's father died in high school and he worked to help support his mother. This caused him lots of problems with graduating on time. He took summer school and apparently ultimately completed high school by getting his GED. This seems to have taken him 6 years. He then went to prep school for a year. Then he went to a Juco called Mobley and played a year. He transferred and sat out a year with a knee injury. He then played another year of Juco ball. Hale reports that OU is optimistic this kid has eligibility and that a ruling should be made today.

I do not profess to be an expert on eligibility but it seems to me this kid has two years left based on the things I have read. The problem for OU is they cannot afford to wait on the NCAA because they need a backup pg. Therefore, if they don't get an immediate ruling, OU may have to focus on other players.

If those facts are correct, let's hope the NCAA makes a ruling quickly and OU can get the kid signed. It would be a downright shame if we were forced to look elsewhere because the NCAA was dragging its feet, then we found out later that we could have signed him after all.

Knowing how the NCAA works (especially when it comes to anything OU), that sounds like a likely scenario.

At this point, we'd take him with one year left anyway, right (as long as it's next year)?
