Gioya Carter

Don't know who peed in your cornflakes, SKSooner, but I think I can answer some of your questions.

Carter is getting minutes because she went 24-8-3 today and has been OU''s best player the last two games. Without her we lose today.

Ortiz is starting because we don't have a lot of PG options. Edwards played well today, but she is small and has struggled at times. Also, Ortiz is still,a freshman and getting used to the college game.

As for not getting coached up, I've seen some good coaching from Sherri this year. Looks like she used non-conference to take a look at a lot of players and see how they responded. She has also used the long road trip to build some team camaraderie. Starting with Yale, she's settled on a starting 5 and shortened her bench.

I know WVU isn't that good this year, but they're an athletic team that's always given us trouble. I think we should all celebrate the win and hope the ladies can continue to improve and surprise some teams during conference play.

I think you missed the vicious sarcasm in SKSooner's post. He/she was mimicking the posts of so many of those who disagree with him/her and tend to find fault with OU rather frequently. He/she is simply posting what they would say.

Great first post! I hope you will join or start a lot of threads in the future. We always need more good posters.

A big win for a YOUNG team!!! We competed hard the whole game, had several players make nice plays, saw a higher ranked team make a run at us, and we responded every time. Bench players contributed, more than just stats show, and there were no negatives that fans ought to worry about.
We are not a top 10 team. We are not a experienced team, supposed to stomp good teams. We are a young team getting better, many young players learning to compete and be consistent.
I call it a great win, and a stepping stone for the future.

A grew win! And we did it with one of our best offensive weapons (Kornet) mostly on the bench and another weapon (Little) not having the best day. This speaks volumes. I think Gioya will continue to mature and dominate.

Mike Carey is a very good coach. The fact that he had no answer for Gioya yesterday shows just how much she was on her game. It is interesting to me that athletes often have "IT" some days when everything goes right. We see it with golfers, quarterbacks, running backs, tennis players, etc. I remember watching Michael Jordan play one day and everything he shot went in. He made one crazy shot and shrugged his shoulders as if to say, "I can't explain it but I'll take it!" It was just his day. Gioya certainly had that kind of scoring day yesterday.

Gioya has the athleticism that we need. Hope she continues to get better.

I usually just read this stuff and never comment. First of all these are kids so lets not be that critical of them. Gioya is my little cousin and I have seen her play like she has the past 2 games all of her life! I'm not surprised at all!!!! Me personally I was wondering what took her so long to start playing like that. I know last season there was no way she would be able to take that many shots. She will be fine and continue to make Sooner Nation proud!!!!!

The kid has some game. I know you are proud of her. I'm with you, I think she has a chance to be a good one.

I am very proud of her! She's finally playing with the confidence that got her the scholarship. Now we just have to keep it going.

She has always been a good defender. Very glad to see her performing so well on the offensive end the last few games. Please let her know that she has a bunch of fans on this board!

Great post, Mr. Carter. Like you, I'm not at all surprised by Gioya's recent performances – and she and I are not even related (LOL). I also agree that some of us go overboard in our criticism of OU players. We should remember that these players are, for the most part, still impressionable teens. I'd guess many of them read the OUHoops board.

I've been a big fan of your cousin since day one. Gioya certainly experienced growing pains her freshman season (and earlier this year). But if I were a betting man, I'd wager that we'll see many more games like the one she played yesterday against WVU.

My apologies - apparently had my sarcasm detector turned off. Sincere thanks for the clarification.

I never have seen a good sarcasm indicator on the internet. You have to know what kind of posts someone has made in the past.

Incidentally, welcome. It is good to have fans of women's basketball.

Sherri said something interesting in the post game interview. Don't remember now what exactly she said, but it was something to the affect that she was ok with "aggressive" turnovers.

I think that is why she is so patient with Gioya when many on here were calling for her to be benched. Gioya's turnovers tend to be the aggressive variety. I've liked Gioya's game since day one and think she is one that we don't want thinking too much about making a mistake. She just needs to go out and play.

I do hope Gioya's performance yesterday allows everyone on the team to relax and to find the hot "guy" whomever it may be on any given night. Sharane, Kay-Kay, Nicole, Gioya, and even Little all have the ability to be the "it" girl on any given night.

A lot of the fouls she gets are "frustration fouls"....she's finally learning to let it go and move on to the next play! #BOOMER

Hope to see you all in attendance soon!!!

You can't teach the kind of quickness Carter has. She is learning to use it and we are beginning to see why Sherri has always been so excited about her. She is going to start attracting double teams so she has to be under control and find the open player. She has good court vision so if she doesn't try to do too much by herself it could work to our advantage.

LaNesia Williams has the same kind of speed and she is now trying to find out how to use it. I think she is ahead of where Carter was last year in that regard.

Someone said earlier or in another thread that Sherri deserved no credit for this win. Come on. She gets all of the credit for the losses. She deserves credit for this win. Most of us would have had Carter on the bench for the rest of the season and maybe KayKay as well.

I really expected West Virginia to beat us on the boards so much that we would lose this game. They didn't look that great but maybe we deserve some credit for that. Glad to see the win. Still don't know what to expect the rest of the season but it should be an interesting ride.

"Most" of us may have had Gioya on the bench for the rest of the season, but I certainly would not have been a member of that majority. Of course, what I think doesn't amount to squat. Fortunately, what Sherri thinks does.

Honestly, I haven't seen anyone who has wanted her benched permanently. We don't have anyone on the roster who should be benched the rest of the year.
