Gioya Carter

You can't teach the kind of quickness Carter has. She is learning to use it and we are beginning to see why Sherri has always been so excited about her. She is going to start attracting double teams so she has to be under control and find the open player. She has good court vision so if she doesn't try to do too much by herself it could work to our advantage.

LaNesia Williams has the same kind of speed and she is now trying to find out how to use it. I think she is ahead of where Carter was last year in that regard.

Someone said earlier or in another thread that Sherri deserved no credit for this win. Come on. She gets all of the credit for the losses. She deserves credit for this win. Most of us would have had Carter on the bench for the rest of the season and maybe KayKay as well.

I really expected West Virginia to beat us on the boards so much that we would lose this game. They didn't look that great but maybe we deserve some credit for that. Glad to see the win. Still don't know what to expect the rest of the season but it should be an interesting ride.

Great post! I didn't think WVU looked all that great either and as Syb mentioned in another post, I think, they had a horribly weak schedule. Got beat bad by the only 2 decent teams they played, Miss State and Ohio State. They have a lot of athletes on their roster but our zone really created havoc for them and forced them into a jump shooting team for the most part. If they didn't have Holmes, they would really be bad.

Our schedule to date prepared us for this win. If we'd played the schedule WVU had and were 10-2 or 11-1, we'd have been run off the court. This team still has a lot of growing to do (mostly building of confidence) but right now, this was a big win.

Honestly, I haven't seen anyone who has wanted her benched permanently. We don't have anyone on the roster who should be benched the rest of the year.

I was just quoting SoonerinNC, Norm.

Schedule did help.

Early this year, I was in favor of benching Gioya. Last year at this same time, I made a post that said that Gioya and T'Ona were the only two that I trusted to have the ball in their hands at crunch time. Subsequently, I would have retracted that about T'Ona as she struggled. But, early this year, Gioya was not making good turnovers. She was often tossing the ball without even looking, as though distracted, often leading to a fast break as someone intercepted the "pass." Her passing has been a problem because she wasn't always using good judgement. But, I would have bench Sharane in most of the past three or four games for the same reason. Sometimes, there is this "daze" exhibited by some people.

Gioya has always had the ability to get where she wanted. That wasn't always the best place for her to be. What has suddenly emerged is the desire to get to the right place. Then, the fact that she is a legitimate threat to score has made her a prime source of assists. She does need to work out the passes with Kay Kay, McKenna, and Vivi so that they know to look for them. Often, they have turned their heads and are looking for rebounds. Bob Pritchard almost lost his head when Adams bounced passes off the back of his head while he was standing alone under the basket. Kay Kay, McKenna, and Vivi are the beneficiaries of Gioya's sudden emergence, but they don't even know that their names are on the policy.

If you watch Gioya yesterday, which I think you can do on SoonerScoop, watch as she blows by Bria. She is quicker than Bria, by a lot. Bria is a pre-season something or other, and Gioya is a lot better athlete. She can be our creator, and the team with the best creator likely wins the Big Twelve.

Maybe not the right thead to post it, and I may be in the minority, but I see a lot of improvement in T'ona this year.

I'm glad fans are finally catching on to what Sherri has obviously known from the start. Yes, Gioya has certainly had her struggles, but that sheer talent and athleticism has been apparent from day one. And yes, she clearly is a better athlete/player than Bria, the preseason Player of the Year.

You're right about Carter being a creator and what that could potentially mean to this team's chances in the Big 12. I think we should all remember, however, that Gioya is only a sophomore and she may still have a few games where she doesn't play like she played against WVU.

I totally agree, soonerstar. And I said as much earlier in this very thread.

I believe Gioya could have gotten a lot of shots last year, but lost her confidence. This year kind of started off the same but the last two or three games, it seems she is back. Last night, she started off in the first 2 l/2 min. missing two lay-ups and then getting her shot blocked on a jumper....she got the ball back and put it in. The rest of the night she did like she has done in other games....made good moves to drive and put up a 5 foot shot or get to the basket, but last night she finished....and when she didn't she did not seem to let it get into her head. Since 2002, we haven't had too many players who can play like Gioya, she just needed to finish her shots. She is doing that and I would imagine that affects all of her game. I have always enjoyed watching her play and thought she could do what she did last night, just hoped that she would. Good for her. Has to make her happy and I like that for her.

You're exactly right, Scrybe! In the post game interview linked, Sherri and Gioya talk about how fast and quick Gioya has always been but she'd also been fast and quick in her head. She's finally been able to slow down the thinking and thus making better decisions offensively that has been seen the last 2 games.

What makes Gioya's emergence so critical is that she operates in the middle. She can get into the lane almost at will. This gives her the ability to hit a short jump shot in the lane, at which she is finally very effective. She can also drive to the basket. BUT:

---it also gives her the ability to get the ball to Kay Kay, McKenna, and Vivi underneath, which we do a lousy job of with bounce passes into the oppositions' hands
---it also give her the ability to kick out to someone on the wing for either a short jump shot or a three. Right now, we aren't hitting that short jump shot, but we aren't setting up well for it either. If Peyton or Nicole do began to hit that baseline shot, Gioya's ability to get into the lane is magnified.

Essentially, Gioya can be what I have always envisioned for Maddie, the creator. Our biggest problem in recent years is in having someone whose activities created shots for others.

Ellenberg wasn't going to let that happen.

She didn't deserve to be on the floor much early in the season because of her erratic play, but as some coaches say "the light went on," it appears. If she continues to play like this throughout the rest of the season she could easily end up this year's MVP.

I hope her play inspires her teammates. If we can get her and Sharane going at the same time consistently, this team can win some games and become a stout competitor come tournament time.

Mr. Carter, pass along all of our best wishes for her and tell her thanks and to keep up the good work!

Will do!

That girl was on fire last night! The first 11 points for the squad! That "green light " is on big time now!!! #BOOMER:OU-logo:

Another Sooner win and another great game for Gioya, my favorite OU player since Stacey Dales.
