Goaltending? He didnt even touch it!!

Tough break. Ball might have missed the rim and had zero chance to go in. Guy was just hustling.

I don't know why he touched that...

Crazy to think that SMU was 1 player away from being the number 2 team in the nation and lost to a team that shouldn't have even been in the tournament...

That sequence happened so fast -- it was shocking. UCLA should not have been able to win on that terrible, terrible shot.

SMU gave them the ball to begin with, so they let it happen.

exactly. it wasn't going in. feel bad for that kid. he was trying to make a difference.

why the hell was he trying to knock the ball off the rim anyway ? block out dummy. 100% goal tending.

Ball looked to be clearly outside the cylinder....no chance of going in. I think the refs blew the call....but I'm not an official. No motel 6 either.:facepalm

It was clearly not going in, but looked like it was partially over the rim when he touched it.

Is that sarcasm? EM was good but not that good.

He didn't knock it off the rim. It was so far wide right he just caught it. One of the worst calls in a while. I am sure the ncaa with apologize..

The ball was going to hit the rim when he tipped it away, but it would have glanced off the side. If the ref hadn't blown the whistle the UCLA guy had the rebound for an easy put back.

On the other end SMU had a very easy 2nd shot that would have counted for the win. I don't like Larry Brown so I'm OK with SMU losing, but I just hate to see it happen like that. OT would have been a fair compromise..... but life isn't always fair.

There was one good TV angle showing the play clearly...or at least better than the others... They didn't show it but once, but it looked like the ball was outside of the cylinder and he just caught it. If it had been a little wider right, it would have been a "NC state" shot.

I have no idea how you think that ball was going to hit the rim. He was behind the goal. What are you watching?

The rule on goaltending:

Art. 3. Goaltending.

a. Goaltending occurs when a defensive player touches the ball during a fieldgoal try and each of the following conditions is met: (Exceptions: Rule 10-4.1.i)

1. The ball is on its downward flight; and
2. The ball is above the level of the ring and has the possibility, while in flight, of entering the basket and is not touching the cylinder.

b. It is goaltending to touch the ball outside the cylinder during a free throw, regardless of whether the free throw is on its upward or downward flight.
c. When the ball contacts the backboard and any part of the ball is above the rim during a field goal attempt, it is considered to be on its downward flight. In such a case, it is goaltending when the ball is touched by a player as long as it has a possibility of entering the basket.
I don't think that's a goaltend; it had no chance of going in. But it did look like the SMU player touched the ball while part of it was inside the cylinder, which would make it basket interference.

We'll never know. The defender went above the rim and tipped the ball on the way down with his hand in the cylinder. He was in front of the rim when he tipped it. He can't do that.

Did you watch the post game with the TV analysts? Even Charles Barkley was saying it was the right call. It was unfortunate but it was a good call based on the rule book. You can't pick and choose when to apply the rules.

By rule, it's probably goaltending...however, logic says otherwise. Either way some team/coach is going to be irate.

Tough break for that kid, what a terrible way to go out.

umm what?

Let me guess, you had SMU in your bracket

Anyone who thinks Charles Barkley knows the college goal tending rules is nuts. The TBS guys thought it was horrible. The ball was not even going to hit the rim. The ref right behind the shooter also knew that and that is why he didn't call it. The ref who had no angle at all to determine if it was on goal or not made the call.
