Goldwire was really good this game. Thought it was his best game if the year. Hopefully this is who we are getting the rest of the season.

Also thought OU looked good when he and Cortes are on the court together.

Neither are a perimeter threat which makes it tough to play both. Defenses can slack off. I do get what you say by having two ball handlers out there. However defenses would just run zones and make life miserable for an already struggling Groves.

Is Harkless a perimeter threat?

He did play very well. Made one bad decision when he pulled a contested three in the second half, and Moser immediately yanked him for a short stretch. That’s what I wish he would do with EJ. Don’t wait till he makes three or four horrible decisions; he’s shown that he can’t self-correct, so coach needs to remind him.

Harkless has been in a scoring slump......is he a perimeter threat - maybe, what do you consider a threat.

Can he shoot 35% from three - yes. Shooting 32.8% now overall, but 43% in big 12 games.

However, look at his overall shooting percentage from the floor in the last three games - 16.7, 30.8 and 25%. Ugh. No 3s versus Texas or Kansas - 0-8 and 2-12 over the last three losses.

When OU wins against a quality opponent, Harkless shots 50% or more from the floor, sans the Florida game.

He is the key to the offense for me.

Can Cortes shoot at all? He never does......I, literally, have no idea.

Harkless has shot above 33 percent one season in his career. He may be marginally better than Goldwire from three, but not enough to truly be considered a threat or change the way teams defend us. I bet every team we play is comfortable with him shooting threes unless they are wide open corner threes. I agree that Cortes hasn’t shown enough for anyone to know if he can shoot it well at this level. He needs to start doing that.

I guess my feeling is that we have seen enough of Harkless to know who he is. He is a below average shooter, terrible handler, and poor decision maker. I don’t consider him the key to our offense because I feel like our offense would be much better off if he simply recognized his limitations and played accordingly. We don’t need him to score 15 points a night. We just need him to not turn it over or put us in terrible situations.

Why isn’t he shooting more? OU could desperately use his outside shooting. Moser needs to tell him to look for it. Mind boggling.

I wish I knew! Maybe in time he will shoot more as his experience and confidence grows. I like what I have seen of him so far.

Why is Harkless the only player Moser doesn’t immediately pull if they make a bad decision?

He’s the leader. Flaws. Sure. But dude is tough as nails.

I think you nailed it, Coach. I have watched Moser and Harkless on the sideline and in huddles. Porter’s communication with Elijah appears to be on a different level than with most of the other players.

Then I’d say Harkless isn’t getting the message because Moser has spoken repeatedly about the need to take care of the ball and make smarter and better decisions. He spoke before the KU game specifically about the guards needing to make better decisions once they get in the lane. Then the game started and EJ turned it over two of the first three times he touched it. I agree that being “tough” has value, but it shouldn’t give a guy a free pass for stupid decisions. The board killed Reaves for a good potion of last season for decision making, and he was an elite scorer who legitimately could take over games and get buckets. Harkless, on the other hand, is all risk with no (or very little) reward. That’s why so many of us are frustrated with him making the same mistakes game after game, but not seeing a reduction in playing time.

No reward? Same crowd was on reaves as well. How’d that work out?
