Good News Tomorrow

Interesting. Not sure what the rationale for that would be but not much surprises me when it comes to the NCAA and transfers.

The NCAA is probably going to make a one year free transfer rule. Any transfer after that will result in a mandatory year sit out. I wonder how long until they make exceptions to their own rules.

The NCAA is meeting tomorrow to allow free transfers for everyone next year. Basically allowing everybody to be eligible immediately.

I thought I had read that even if this passed, it probably wouldn't go into effect until a year from now, but who knows with the NCAA.

I also wonder if the one year free transfer rule includes the grad transfers? Or will those guys still be able to transfer a second time without sitting out under that rule?

Interesting.

This should be Gibson, who is a solid pickup, but won't be eligible next year, which IMO is a problem. Probably means we're going after at least another transfer guard, but that player will likely be less impactful than Gibson.

Guys that should be playing the 1/2 spots next year:
Harmon, Williams, Phipps, and Reaves

That is pretty thin. Especially considering that Phipps probably won't be ready for significant minutes next year (my opinion), and Reaves is better suited as a 3 (again, my opinion). Gotta have another body, I'd think. Unless I'm wrong on Gibson's eligibility.

My hope would be Phipps redshirts or comes in for 4-8min a game. I think Williams and Hill will split all the mins at the 3, Reaves will play 32-36min at the 2 guard, Harmon will probably play 30 min at the 1. I just think 5 guards will get all the minutes and Phipps as your 6th guard would be fine.
I'm a bit more concerned with our bigs. Manek will play most of the minutes at the 4 spot, Kur and Victor split at the 5 gives us 3 guys. If Issanza or Garang aren't ready to play I could see our bigs wearing down quickly/injury concerns.

By all accounts, Garang is more of a tall 3 than a 4/5. Spends most of his time around the perimeter on offense. Obviously it remains to be seen if he can guard the same type of player on defense. But other than his height, it doesn’t seem like he offers anything else in regards to playing the 4/5 positions.

Phipps case is interesting. I think he can play because he shots it so well. He plyed big boy Aau and 6a ball.

Redshirt would be great but opening the floor would be nicer.

Is Phipps like a Rotnei Clarke or a Keiton Page kinda guy? Or a Jake Sullivan kinda guy?

Most recent articles I have seen say it will go into effect in the 2020-21 season. If it passes (and I’m told OU coaches believe it will), transfers in men and women’s BB, football and baseball will be eligible to play immediately. They’re already eligible in the other sports.

As I understand it, this new proposal would apply to everyone, providing they meet the one time transfer rule guidelines. For example, a transfer like UNT’s Gibson, who has two years of eligibility, could conceivably play next season.

This article explains it fairly well without going into a lengthy opinion piece tirade no one will want to read:

Well if Gibson can play next year, that certainly changes things some.

Gibson, Harmon, Reaves, Manek, Kur

With Williams, Hill, Iwuakor, and maybe Issanza first off the bench. And I guess we're getting another transfer, so we'll have to see who that is as well.

I realize I’m the eternal optimist, but I think he can be. Every video I have watched, I see a baby faced kid with an obvious high basketball IQ and an uncanny ability to score from everywhere on the floor.

I remember getting frustrated when Clarke and Page would light up the scoreboard on us. Maybe It’s our turn now!

Closer to Clarke. He doesn’t s have the range or ability to make quick, off balanced shots coming off screens. He is quicker & can get to the rim a little better than Clarke.

Any word on when today's announcement will come? Knowing if it's still hours away will free me up to actually get some work done today.

I don’t have a time. Guessing it’ll just be a Twitter post

I've seen him play a couple of times in person (I'm in Jenks) and I think he i better than what a lot of people give him credit for. I watched BTW play @ Jenks back in Feb, and in pre-game warm-ups...I saw Phipps hit about 15/20 from well behind the 3-pt line. Both he and Bryce Thompson had a warm-up routine where they would take turns shooting the ball while the other guy passed to him...and you could easily tell Phipps could out shoot BT any day of the week. BT is obviously more athletic and can create his shot better than TP, but I really liked TP's game.

Can he play the point in college??? I think he can at times to get them some minutes there if needed, but he'll defintely be more of a pick and pop type of player. Most sites list him at 6'2"...to me he looked a little taller than that...so he has much better size than Clarke or Page from that perspective. He also had a pretty quick release. I thing I liked most about his game was that he played with an attitude!! Talked a little trash and played with a swag...much more than BT, who played with a pretty quiet demeanor..but had a smoothness to his game.

Just my 2 cents on Phipps.

Goof stuff, cvangild! It’s always nice to get a firsthand analysis from someone who has seen a player in person. Phipps has played with and against some quality competition. I didn’t look it up again, but didn’t he score 42 points in the 6-A championship game last season?
