Good News Tomorrow

Thing I like even more is that he plays good defense, not just a scorer/shooter.

I think Gibson has to play off-ball or Harmon changes like Jordan Woodard did.

Based on this year, and the rumors that Gibson wants to play pg, it looks like they are trying to play Harmon off the ball.

I'm not a fan of that. Harmon isn't an elite scorer. All his best skills are as a facilitating pg.

Solid pickup. This certainly helps alleviate concerns on the perimeter. I really like the 40% from 3 stat on 7 attempts per game.

I could be off base here, but I don't think we'll play a style next year where there will be a single primary ball handler. I think it will be whichever side the ball is rebounded on, they go up that wing with either Harmon or Gibson taking it (sometimes Reeves or Williams as well). I think that gets us in the offense quicker and doesn't allow for defenses to set. I worry more about our defense with both undersized guards out there more than our offense to be honest.
Really excited about this pick up though. I doubt he'll score at the same level in the Big 12 that he did Conference USA, but he's a good scorer overall and a welcome addition to the guard rotation.

I’m going to watch more film of Gibson (other than highlights) before I give my real opinion. I think Harmon is better on ball as of now, but if he gets a shot I think he’s better suited off-ball on offense. My reason for this is he doesn’t break down or get by his guy easily. I think he’ll be better suited attacking guys off the catch rather than breaking them down off the dribble or off a pick, assuming he develops a good outside shot. Shooting is easier to improve than breaking someone down. Now if JB was coming back I thought Harmon could break down better than JB, so I would’ve liked that switch.

Like I said I have to see some full games of Gibson before I give my final opinion on who I think would be better at pg. Also Gibson now gives OU there only junior.

I think the defense will be ok, even though JB was OU’s best perimeter defender last year. I think there will be more ball pressure. JB was a more solid defender, DH & it looks like Gibson like to get in people’s shorts. Also to pressure the ball you need a shot blocker, this is where Kur & Vic come into play.

It’s really hard to train guards to determine whichever side the ball goes to then you go get the ball. There’s a lot of miscommunication when that happens & it slows things down. I bet you have a designated guy to retrieve the ball but both running guards will read situations and anticipate deeper outlets. I think the main 4 guards are all comfortable bringing up the ball.

I’m not sure it matters who plays the point. I think Harmon and Gibson may be interchangeable. Gibson likes to play fast (faster than JB), so I can see him controlling the ball on one trip down the floor, and Harmon taking the outlet pass on the next. If Lon wants his team to play uptempo, he’ll get it with Umoja and De’Vion running the show.

It's more about who gets the ball up top when we reset the offense. That is generally who I refer to as the pg. And it happens more than you'd think. Agree with you on the fast breaks, not a big deal who brings it up there.

All good points. Defensively, I expect us to be a bit quicker up top as a group due to the addition of Mo and Harmon's expected growth as a player. Losing JB's defensive recovery time, due to quickness and length, to the wings and the point will hurt. I think you are right in the thought that we will push more people towards the middle for Kur/Vic to get some shots blocked. We haven't had that in a few years and will help our general defensive presence.

From my experience with guards, getting a guard to be on a wing when a shot goes up isn't too challenging. Everyone has their role to play when a shot goes up, so reading a shot and taking the coached action is what is expected. Easier said than done sometimes though...
I get your point of having a primary ball handler sometimes go get the ball, but I think we will try to play bit quicker next year so you will see it much less frequently. It definitely won't be a Trae Young scenario where Mo seeks out the ball on every possession lol

When you look at the motion offense we ran this year, it was all about match ups and getting up the court quicker ideally should get you better match ups. We shall see! That's part of the fun.

Also. I’m sure he wants the much bigger stage OU brings. So I doubt being the PG is his overriding factor.

Don’t see that happening. 2 pgs on the floor is better than 1
