Gottlieb with the "Dayton finally just ran out of gas"

Doug Gottlieb's quote with 14:30 to play in the game...."OU is in BIG trouble."..The score when he said it was 43-40....I finally turned down the sound of the TV and listened to Toby Rowland..Too much Aggie still in Doug to call an OU game.

we were in big trouble. ANybody that has watched ou games this year has seen this quite a few times this season. And Doug was right. It was 49-40 shortly after that quote.

Proud of our team for not folding down 9. Showed some poise

Everyone needs to learn to take a chill pill. Gottlieb has been very complimentary of the team all year. Not everything needs to be taken as a slight. Enjoy life fellas!

Sweet 16!

yep. he has be more pro OU than fran

You've seen me complain in several threads, too. Because many of these posters have been dogging this team the whole freaking season, and it gets old.

Here are some direct quotes from the game thread, all posted with plenty of time remaining in the game:

we're not winning this game.

Eff this I'm out. Seen this script enough

Well we got football to look forward to...oh wait a minute

**** you spangler

Get Spangler off the floor...can't hit ****...embrassing

Dumbass play hield. We just aren't snart

Those comments are downright embrassing and not at all snart. And there are plenty more just as bad as these; this is just a small sampling.

Ryan Spangler has been a warrior since the day he set foot in Norman, and he deserves the respect of everyone who sits on his ass on the couch and claims to be a Sooner fan. We all get frustrated, but honestly, comments like the above cross the line. And the game thread is rife with them game after game after game.

I'll comment on this because embarrasingly several of these were mine:facepalm

We have seen multiple collapses this season that followed this same script. I happy that we were able to rally and over come it in this game. We can't do it again this season though. MSU will step on our throat if they get a 9 point lead and mo on their side.

We do seem to make some bone headed plays and as a team our IQ doesn't seem to be where it should be with the experience we have.

Spangler has been really weak finishing around the rim. Hopefully he got all of those out of his way

I apologize for my comments. They are embarrasing. No excuses for them. That is why I try to stay clear of the game threads.

Maybe part of it is my kids are around and I know I can't vent out loud like on a message board lol

Me too. I stay away from the posting and just watch the game. I even go so far as to wait and see the box score before posting anything. I can get rather unobjective during the game. I am really happy for the guys they came back and won when they could have packed it in. Showed more toughness.

Doug still has a deep hatred for OU. I know for a fact that he and his nemesis at OU would still rather punch each other than shake hands. The thug reference (Renzi Stone a "thug"? Please...) was just another jab.

That said, I enjoy Doug's insight. I just wish it wasn't during OU games because he can't help but show his Aggie.

I think Doug was referring the gas part to the fact Dayton was playing their 3rd game in 6 days. But I would feel sorry for them had they not got home court advantage in all 3 games.

I knew what he was meaning by thug. Might not have been the best description but I think he would have said the same thing for any team.

Stone, najera, bookout, spangs

We have a good recent history of big brute "bullies" down low that do the dirty work.

I still don't think Renzi fits that bill, especially since most of his career he played with Eduardo.

MAybe not. I didn't get to see renzi play a whole lot. Or atleast don't remember it. I was relatively young then

The thug term used likely equates to enforcer and nothing else.

I'm not sure they ran out of gas as much as it was that OU changed what they were doing on offense and defense. On offense they started taking it to the basket more and on defense they stopped leaving their man to go help on drives and post players.

One thing i noticed about the Big 12 teams is that as soon as there is some dribble penetration everyone stops guarding their player and collapses regardless if the on ball defender is in good position or not.

Wichita State did a fantastic job of staying home and not giving wide open 3 pointers. So many times when a Kansas player would penetrate he would look to pass instead of trying to score.

Nah. When Doug's saying it about OU and mostly about guys he played against, he's meaning it as thug. There's no love lost.

I guess it's OK to call people thugs again? Only if they are white, or Mexican?

;)

Poor choice of words by Gottlieb, and really, not even a good comparison. Spangler's game is pretty clean compared to some of the guys Kelvin had. "Thugs" don't get 31.2 minutes per game, or they would foul out every game. Spangler is a great rebounder, but he isn't excessively physical, mainly because he knows we need him out there, and there isn't a lot behind him on the bench.

Gottlieb knew he was throwing a little jab out there. He chuckled at himself even before he threw it out there. It doesn't bother me. I think it's a little funny that he is still a little consumed by things like that. It wasn't any big secret that Kelvin like to ugly a game up with physical play. Trying to put that on Ryan and this team, though, is silly.

no offense Nutt but that wasn't just a kelvin trait. The big-8/12 has had quite a few teams and coaches who lugged a thug around in their lineup. Mizzou, Iowa State, OSUx, OU, Nebraska ... all have had periods where a physical player was relied upon to enforce things inside.

I saw nothing wrong with Dougie's little description. I agree though that he's off the mark regarding Spangler. That's not Ryan's game at all. He's just a utility guy like Nick Collison - without whom the Thunder would FAIL MISERABLY!! Spangler is just as important to OU as Collison is to OKC. That's why I hope he heals up a bit during this layoff.

He explained what he meant by "basketball thug." He meant big guys who through their weight around in the paint. I actually think it was supposed to be a compliment. I'm going to be honest, it was pretty funny to hear someone call Renzi Stone a thug.

I thought DG was off the mark regarding Booker yesterday. He totally ignored Frank's recent contributions and didn't mention his early injury troubles. To hear Gottlieb tell it, you'd have thought Booker had been a total bust this season, and that's just not accurate.

yep. agreed.

Oh, I agree. Big12 was more physical back then. And I never considered OU to be dirtier than anyone else. You just had to be tough to compete in this conference.

My point was more about putting that on this current OU squad and coaching staff. It's a whole different style of play. Kruger doesn't deserve to have one of his players labeled a "thug" on national TV just because DG didn't like physical play 15 years ago. I know he was just trying to being cute, but it was too much of a stretch for me.

I think Doug meant the term "thug" as a compliment. It's a guy who blocks out, sets screens, rebounds, takes charges and generally does the "blue collar" work on the inside. That is Ryan. I don't see him as an enforcer.

I don't about the rest of you, but I held my breath when Ryan took that late charge. He got the call, but tried again with a minute or so left and got called for the block. I honestly didn't want him trying it earlier with the 3 fouls. We need his board work.
