Graham POY

It should be renamed the Jacques Vaughn Award, going to the leader of the Kansas Jayhawks, regardless of how far his stats are behind the leaders of other teams.

KU has only won the award five times in the 14-year streak, I believe, so it hardy is a rubber stamp. But I love the reference because Vaughn is probably my least favorite KU player ever, and that is saying something lol!

Not only should it be based on what they did in conference play only, but defense matters. Graham played defense and Trae didn't. Trae has had a great freshman season but he wasn't better than Graham in the 18 conference games.

Everyone plays better defense than Trae, but Devonte, statistically, is actually just as bad as Trae is on defense.

What's funny is if you look at advanced stats, Trae's Defensive rating (estimated points allowed per 100 possessions) is 111.9. Graham's is 111.8. They both have a .4 on Defensive win share. Devonte is not a good defender, and that's not why he won the award. He won because he was on a winning team.

For reference, Jevon Carter, defensive player of the year in the Big 12 has a defensive rating of 103.3 and a defensive w/s of .9, far better than either of those two (obviously)

That honor goes to Danny Manning. I still curse at the TV when he appears as WForest’s head coach.

Graham is a really good defender, top 5 in the big12 based on what I've seen. When you consistently guard the other teams' best guard you're gonna give up some points.

"It’s an honor being the Freshman of the Year," Young said after Sunday's practice. "I'm disappointed I didn’t get Player of the Year. But I know winning matters. Winning matters, and I wish we could have won more games. I'm very disappointed. But if that was the case, Kansas should have the last 14 Player of the Years. But I'm very honored for the awards I got. So I’m very ready to get it going again."

:facepalm

You might give up some points but you shouldn’t be near or even with straw Young in defensive rating. Also, Graham guarded evefyone’s PG, like everyone other PG in the league did. They didn’t send Graham on the best player like they did last year. So no, Graham isn’t a top 5 defender in the league, hence why he ranks right next to Trae.

Yes he is, watch him defend and it's obvious. Trae was the worst defensive guard in the big12, Graham was top 5. Big12 coaches believe so too obviously.

You and I must watch KU games differently. Graham got beat multiple times.

Graham wasn't top 5 either, that's why he didn't make all Big 12 defensive team. Stats don't lie, Graham isn't a good defender. He gets blown by several times on drives and struggles on switches.

You want film, see the end of the OU KU game in Norman. Graham was supposed to switch on the screen, he didn't, let Manek get wide open. Almost every game, Graham gets blown by or doesn't switch properly. The only reason people think he's a good defender is because of what he did with Buddy. Other than that, he's sucked defensively.

Couldn't agree more. Graham is bad defensively. He just happens to be the best player on the best team. He is neither the best player nor the most valuable player in the Big 12.

Well I guess all the big12 coaches are wrong then.

Individual defensive stats are pretty much garbage. Good defense is much harder to measure than good offense. JMO.
