I did not expect this:

OU out rebounded a much taller Baylor team 33-29.

Wow. I had kind of figured with the focus on transition defense and the mostly 4 guard lineup that we wouldn't out rebound too many people this year - certainly not a team with three guys going 6'10"+.

C.J. Washington is showing that his rebounding numbers in JuCo were no fluke. 11 minutes - 4 rebounds (2 defensive, 2 offensive).

If this team continues to put in that kind of effort on the boards as well as the great defense, they could be in line for a good number more Ws.

Several of these guys came here in the midst of tough circumstances and wanting to be part of the group that turned things back around. They are doing just that. In terms of effort and toughness, this team is setting a foundation to be proud of.

Great job, men.

Cade didn't show up much on offense. He got 5 points during that 24-3 run I think. But he more than made up his lack of offense with rebounds and defense. He had 7 boards to co lead the team with Cam Clark.

I would honestly like to see us play Neal and Washington play more. They seem to be pretty athletic on the defensive side of the ball.

I think Neal gets lost a bit out there which keeps him on the bench more. I really wish he'd come around a bit more.

I think you're right on that. It seems like it's just taking him a little longer to get comfortable out there and to know his role. Given some time, like Washington and to some extent Clark (though he's always gotten the minutes), I think he'll become more comfortable and start to contribute good minutes. I look for both he and C.J. to be logging a good 12-15 minutes a game as we get closer to the Big 12 tourney. At 6'7" with range, he could really exploit some matchups if he gets his feet under him.

I agree. Neal will be fine. He just needs the time to develop. OUr rotation is going good right now. Neal's light will go on soon just like Cam's did.... IMO

Rebounding is about getting someone on your backside and blocking them out, where the 4 guard line up hurts us is when other teams has 2 post players in the game. I thought CJ was huge yesterday in the 11 minutes he played with his ability to guard. I am really looking forward to us moving away from the 4 guard line up next year with the insertion of Osby and Goff into the lineup, should be interesting.

If someone would've told me before the game that OU would out board Baylor, I would've called them a liar. But, they darn sure did! They were wiping the glass babee. :vitale

CJ is wonderful. hes 2nd on the team with 12 blocks behind fitz 16. i really wish he could play 15-20 min a game. i just love him

I'm not sure he would be as effective if he played 15-20 mins per game. I think his role right now as an 8-12 min per game player is great. He provides a real spark off the bench when we need it.

CJ needs to be playing 15-20 minutes a game, no doubt in my mind about that. If he were to play that much I'm sure he would learn how to properly pace himself.

Right now he's still in "oh my gosh, I'm in the game, going to go 110 miles a hour because I don't know how long I will be in the game and thats the best way to have an impact for 5 minutes or so" mode. Some of that has to fall on the lack of a consistent rotation early in the year and he didn't know when the hook would come. I think he's starting to figure out that he is going to be getting consistent minutes so the pacing is coming.

I agree 100%. CJ needs to be playing a lot. I like him and what he brings to this team. He has that blue collar mentality that has been missing some the past few years.

I agree. Washington plays about 10 mpg. I wish he played 20 mpg. His minutes would make Cade slide to the 3 more and cut into both Clark and Cade's mins, but not much. Here is how I'd split up the minutes.

30 - Blair
10 - Newell
35 - Pledger
35 - Clark
35 - Davis
5 - Neal
30 - Fitzgerald
20 - Washington

200 - Total

Its pretty close to what Capel does except I'd use Newell, Neal and Washington a few minutes more and keep Clark from playing 40 minutes, and keep Cade from playing like Charles Oakley, and let him be more of an energy player like he used to, and keep Fitzgerald from getting so many cheap fouls from being tired. I know he's lost weight, but he still needs a break sometimes. 10 minutes into the BU game he was still on the floor and he could barely run up and down.

This brings to mind something I've been noticing (and its a BIT off topic)...has anyone noticed how many minutes Blake has been getting with the Clips??? Looks to me like they want him on the floor as much as possible...

Neal is pretty much our worst defensive player anytime he's on the court. The opposing team ALWAYS goes after him when he's on the floor. He's got a lot of work to do defensively. But I agree about Washington. The game is really slowing down for him and it's showing.

I'm probably going to get flames for this but another aspect of kelvins coaching I wish capel would use is the way Kelvin maximized the bench time for his stars by substituting just before a media timeout and halftime. For instance, with Hollis, Sampson would take him out sometime inside the final minute of the first half to give him a longer rest at the half. Or if a dead ball occured at the 12:15 mark or so, he would also sub for Hollis. Say the next dead ball was at 11:55 which is a media timeout, Hollis would get a 2 or 3 minute rest but only miss :20 seconds of game time.

I always liked the way Kelvin did that and it was usually that way with the players he needed on the floor the most. Maybe Capel has done this in the past and I either don't remember it or forgot, which is possible.

He definitely did that with Blake. In fact, I remember watching a game during which the announcers were actually pointing it out and tracking it.

You're right, it's a great coaching move and one I'm guessing the assistants are keeping track of. Can't imagine the HC keeping his eye on all of those things...

I distinctly remember tracking this one game and then the next game I saw the announcers doing it like you guys pointed out. Definitely a great move by Capel.
