Hoiberg may be interested in Bulls job

Looks like Steve Prohm from Murray state is the new isu coach

If he stays in Ames:
  • He will be a mega millionaire
  • He will have job security for as long as he wants
  • He will continue to win at the college level
  • The fans and town will adore him
  • He will only have to coach 35 games a year
  • They will erect statues of him and probably name the damn arena after him

If he goes to the NBA:
  • He will be a mega millionaire
  • He will have job security until his first losing season, then will get fired
  • He may or may not win at the NBA level
  • The fans and town will like him only if he gets Chicago into the finals, otherwise, they will boo and hate him
  • He will have to coach a minimum of 82 games a year
  • He will, in all likelihood, not have statues erected in his honor or have the arena named after him

So he has to coach more than double the amount of games, while also increase his risk exponentially.

Tom Thibodeu makes 4 million per year
Fred Hoiberg made 2.6 million in 2014

Hoiberg's salary breakdown through 2023:

2014-15: $2.2 million
2015-16: $2.3 million
2016-17: $2.4 million
2017-18: $2.5 million
2018-19: $2.6 million
2019-20: $2.7 million
2020-21: $2.8 million
2021-22: $2.9 million
2022-23: $3.0 million

This doesn't include his bonuses and incentives for winning, getting in the NCAA Tournament, etc. He makes more than 5 NBA coaches make.

Roughly half the salary, but remember he is coaching 35 games instead of 82+ and the NCAA regulates how often and how long the team can practice. His risk also goes up significantly in the NBA.

Sorry... had to bump this thread as Hoiberg is on the verge of losing his job.

Think you're missing that these guys are competitors and want to win at the highest level. Plus, he'll land on his feet and get a primo college job in no time if he wants it. Or he can get a cush 7 figure gig calling games and doing studio analysis for ESPN.

Interesting comment... I will throw this back at you and see what you think.

NBA is a "players" game, while NCAA is a "coaches" game. Meaning, players take all the credit for NBA success while coaches seem to take all the credit for NCAA success.

Do you agree with that?

There are x's and o's coaches and ego-manager coaches. Sometimes the ego managers don't get credit, despite the fact that they are doing great work.

Popovich gets a ton of credit for San Antonio's success, as does Brad Stevens in Boston. Calipari gets credit for recruiting great players, but he doesn't get nearly as much credit for coaching them.

NBA and NCAA head coaches have very different jobs. Few NBA coaches have control over personnel. While it's almost impossible to win big without elite talent in the NBA, it has to be maddening for a college coach to roll through the regular season and capture a high seed, only to have it all undone by some mid-major shooting the lights out in one game. There is less randomness in the NBA playoffs, which is either good or bad, depending upon how much talent you have.

If Hoiberg gets fired soon, Chicago still owes him around $15 mil. Not to say that Hoiberg has done a great job, but the Bulls' undoing has far more to do with their front office, as they have made some nonsensical personnel moves in the last year. Thus, given his previous NBA background, Hoiberg could possibly get another NBA job down the road, or he can go back to being the mayor of a college town in the middle of nowhere. I don't see how he'd be worse off now than when he left Iowa State, unless that's the only program he ever wanted to coach.

I understand the premise of abd's stance, but he's leaving out the major clashes between the Mayor the and the Administration in Ames. There are several articles out there, but this one is the best.

I'm sure Hoiberg will be fired soon, but I can't imagine it's been much of a joy coaching a geriatric like Wade and a headcase like Rondo.
