Hook and Robinson are very different types of players, and I'm not sure that a comparison is valid. I wonder if Morgan can make it in the pros. She is more about how to do it rather than raw talent. But, you also have to look at the teams that each had to work with.
In DRob's last year, our leading scorers weren't shooting a high percentage. As a team, it wasn't much different than it is now, largely because DRob shot 45.8% from the field, herself. But, Vegas (39.2%), Hand (38.9%), Roethlisberger (38.2%), and Morgan (39.2%) weren't even 40% shooters. DRob was a large part of the offense because the rest of it hadn't really developed. She averaged 18.3 per game because Vegas and Hand were the only two others who threatened to score much. As a team, we watched DRob a lot, and I don't know that Morgan and Vegas knew what to do all the time yet.
Now, if you look at this year's team, Hook is about the only one who isn't shooting 40%. Vegas (44.1%), Nicole (51.6%), Campbell (40.9%). and Jo (46.0) and shooting quite well, and we lost two in Hand (53.2%)and Maddie (62.5%) who were shooting even better. If we need a three-point shot, we can always toss it to Vegas (44.1%), Sharane (35.8%), or Jo (37.7%). The key is that Morgan has options as to where the ball can go and get a score that DRob really didn't have.
Incidentally, DRob averaged about four turnovers per game to Morgan's three.
I think the real advantage that Morgan has is that this team is more like what Sherri teaches than DRob's team was. This group of players seems to learn every game. The in-game adjustments seem to work out better. Yesterday, for example, OSU killed us in the first half with drives to the lane and little tosses to wide open shooters for layups. Sherri said it was due to the screens, and they would talk about OSU's screens and how to fight through them at halftime. OSU didn't do that in the second half. They listened and adjusted. This team reflects its coaching.
I think that may be partially due to Morgan. She was the one that Sherri saw as a freshman in HS as the player who controlled the floor. When I watch what Jo, Nicole, and Sharane do, it seems that they are almost extensions of the roles that Sherri envisions. Hopefully, Vegas will get there in the next year.
But, I also watched Morgan make a couple of really stupid mistakes yesterday at key times. She tried a lazy pass over a defender on the secondary break to a wide open Vegas, only to have it easily intercepted. If we had scored, we would have tied the game. I also watched her throw a length of the floor pass that was easily intercepted, and Vegas wasn't really open on the receiving end. She also had a couple of drives in which she tossed the layup at the rim from about eight feet away. She usually misses those. But, for the most part, she is the key to how steady this team plays. The team is lost without her on the floor. They may say that X or Y is the leader, but Morgan is the one who sets the pace.
Right now, I see this as the best "team" since 2002. Morgan is a key part of that. If we had Whitney and Maddie (the one that I thought was developing), we could be a threat. Right now, we are playing very, very well for a five-player team.
