Maybe I missed it being discussed on here but from the looks of twitter Jelon has some healing to do?

Here you go:

@OU_MBBall: Sophomore @Jelon_1 had surgery today to repair stress fracture in fifth metatarsal (bone in foot). Could be sidelined 6-8 weeks. #Sooners

If he's out eight weeks, that puts him on the court about 10 days before the exhibition opener.

Oh, boy! I sure hope this is not the sign of a trend with nagging injuries.

First, Hield, and now Hornbeak. Fortunately, we have more depth in our backcourt. But we still can't afford to lose key players like Je'lon and Buddy.

Is it normal to have surgery for a stress fracture or is it something they do for athletes to speed up the recovery time?

I had the same surgery, with a screw being put in my 5th metatarsal. I was walking without a boot in 2 weeks, and running in 4 weeks. Back to hooping late week 5. Granted, not at his level, but still easily 100% by 8 weeks.

Why the screw? Did your doctor explain?

What is going on here? It is kind of strange that OU has two guards that have the exact same injury. I am starting to worry about those Nike shoes.

Football QB Kendal Thompson also fractured his foot in practice, although the circumstances of the injury may have been different.

I was told by an athletic trainer that some of these stress fractures result from over-training. These kids work so hard to get better, that sometimes they do too much. There is a limit to how much pounding and stress that the bones can take, especially in the feet.

Every athlete is different. It is hard to tell a kid to NOT practice so much. It is hard to know which player is more prone to this type of issue.

Get well Buddy.

Get well Je'lon.

That all sounds right. Jelon's foot was probably in much worse shape than Buddy's before the Europe trip. He had it heavily taped and he didn't participate in 100% of the practice activities. He was on the stationary bike some of the time.

They probably knew he was going to need a little procedure and wasn't going to do much more damage by playing. Buddy was perfectly capable of playing on the trip. But, his foot wasn't going to heal until he got off of it for 2/3 weeks.

Hopefully they will be both good to go in a month or so.

Yeah. They tried to let it heal on its own, but twice I re-broke it after being cleared to play. Finally got a 2nd opinion, and my new doc said he always puts a screw in if it is in an athletic type person. Got the screw put in and was running pain free in 4 weeks. Never a problem in the 5 years since. I never had the screw removed. Figured it was keeping my foot together.

They are going to change style of shoe because of it.

Good. When two players go down with the same injury, that appears to be a sign that something is wrong somewhere. Better now than after the season gets underway, that's for sure.
