@OU_MBBall: Sophomore @Jelon_1 had surgery today to repair stress fracture in fifth metatarsal (bone in foot). Could be sidelined 6-8 weeks. #Sooners
Is it normal to have surgery for a stress fracture or is it something they do for athletes to speed up the recovery time?
I had the same surgery, with a screw being put in my 5th metatarsal. I was walking without a boot in 2 weeks, and running in 4 weeks. Back to hooping late week 5. Granted, not at his level, but still easily 100% by 8 weeks.
What is going on here? It is kind of strange that OU has two guards that have the exact same injury. I am starting to worry about those Nike shoes.
Football QB Kendal Thompson also fractured his foot in practice, although the circumstances of the injury may have been different.
I was told by an athletic trainer that some of these stress fractures result from over-training. These kids work so hard to get better, that sometimes they do too much. There is a limit to how much pounding and stress that the bones can take, especially in the feet.
Every athlete is different. It is hard to tell a kid to NOT practice so much. It is hard to know which player is more prone to this type of issue.
Get well Buddy.
Get well Je'lon.
Why the screw? Did your doctor explain?

They are going to change style of shoe because of it.
