How many Big 12 wins does Capel need to save his job?

If Capel gets this team to four wins in the Big 12 that would be a hell of an accomplishment with this group. He won't though, because that will require this team to improve over the course of this season against better competition than they've played so far this year. And they aren't any better now than they were Game 1.

What are the winnable games in conference for this team?

Colorado (home)
Nebraska (home)
Texas Tech (home and away, they're bad and should have a lame duck coach or interim)
Baylor (home, they seem to be in a slump why not?)
OSU (senior day is my main reasoning for this one)

So at the best case its 6-10.

Realistically though I think 4 is the limit for this team unless something shocking happens.

If we go 0-16 then this season would be the equivalent of OU football dropping off a 2-10 season (or worse). Do you think that would be tolerated? Hail no, the coach would be fired. It wouldn't matter how much the buyout was, the fans would burn down Boren's house if he was not fired.

what if bob was in similar circumstances? would you want to fire him or possibly give him a couple years to see if he can get back on track after hes had success? yes i understand bob has been here MUCH longer & done many many MANY wonderful things, but i believe capel has just had a string of bad luck. our team last year was NOT as bad as our record seemed. we had no defense no team no hustle no HEART. & if this team was like last years team then id probably be saying capel needed to go. but this team is NOT last years team. no they are not nearly as talented i get that but they try & they show heart. give capel another year see what he brings in.... sorry hes not john calipari & cant pay every single one of his players. but im ok with that.

What bad luck? He hired Oronde, so whatever Oronde did to put us in trouble with the NCAA is not due to bad luck because Capel hired him. He wasn't told to hire Oronde or be fired.

The players that have quit were all his signings.

TMG and Tiny quit after 1 season, but the word on the street is Tiny was coming back until the allegations of improper recruiting or whatever hit the airwaves and he was afraid he'd be ruled ineligible. So, that comes back to Capel hiring Taliaferro so you can't say that was bad luck. I guess you could say TMG leaving for the NBA (what a joke) was bad luck, so I'll give you that one.

I believe he had some serious good luck to have the brother of the best player on the planet already on the team when he accepted the job. Had Taylor been recruited by OSU, Capel is probably out of a job in year 3, or after last year.

Griffin is what got him the extension and the big salary. That's good luck. I'd like to have that kind of luck.

I don't think that's right.

I'm pretty sure somebody posted quotes from a radio interview a few months back and he stated on the radio interview he knew they were only going to be here 1 (he may have said 2) years.

I'll see if I can find it and then edit my post if not.

I believe that midway through the year he realized that TMG would be gone and at most he expected Tiny to be here two years.

I'm sure the original plan when recruiting them was for Tiny to be a 2 year player (like Blake and Willie) with TMG being like Sheron Collins and a 4 year legend given his size.

This is how I remember it, Tiny was a two year plan and TMG was no way supposed to bolt after one. However, as the season progressed, Capel pretty much figured out TMG didn't want to be in school anymore.

If someone can find a quote to the contrary, I will gladly eat my words.

I did a quick search and couldn't find the radio interview I thought was here. I found one that said he knew one of the players would leave after last year, but I would guess he was talking about WW.

I don't think he will get fired. Mainly considering the contract. OU wouldn't just have to buy out him, but a viable coach to turn things around. Add to that the upfront money you would have to give to a legit coach. I would just have to see the candidates avaable. Only guu that would turn my head is buzz williams.

Gregg Marshall would turn my head. He can coach.

Agreed with everything you are saying except for the Taylor part... Taylor wasn't afraid to hide the fact that he was ready to transfer, until Capel supplanted KS and earned Taylor's trust and confidence shortly after. Taylor's approval of Capel played an integral role in landing Blake, so I would argue that it was more than just "luck".

But you are right with your main point: The majority of Capel's struggles at this juncture are his own fault.

This story is apocryphal.

If you don't think it will happen why are you speculating over the consequences?

This exercise is a waste of time. We have some glaring weaknesses that no amount of coaching can overcome. We have a nice solid base to build around. Capel is a proven coach who at a very young age has run into some adversity. He will plug to gaps and take us on another run just like he did when he took over a decimated team 5 years ago.
"We have some glaring weaknesses that no amount of coaching can overcome."

- And those weaknesses are the result of poor recruiting and talent evaluation by our head coach.

"We have a nice solid base to build around."

- We have Cameron Clark - if he bucks history and decides to stick around for a few years.

"Capel is a proven coach who at a very young age has run into some adversity. He will plug to gaps and take us on another run just like he did when he took over a decimated team 5 years ago."

- I wish this team had the talent that Capel's first team had (Carter, Godbold, Longar, T Griffin, Johnson, Neal). This year's team is decimated - and Capel has decimated it. I think he can coach, but what good is that if he can't recruit and maintain Big 12 caliber players?

You and I will have to agree to disagree here because had Sampson not recruited Taylor at all, then no way does Blake come to OU. I don't see any way the 2 brothers would play at different colleges.

In an article cited last week, it said Blake was ready to commit to OU during his jr year but Taylor told him to hold off just yet. So, at that point, Blake was all in for OU until Taylor told him to hold up and see if he is still there. I do agree that Capel deserves some credit for getting Taylor on his side and then convincing BG to sign with OU, but I stand by my original statement that had Kelvin not recruited and signed Taylor, then Blake never comes to Norman.

This story is apocryphal.

You don't have to believe it. Had a few mutual friends of Taylor and Blake (mainly Taylor) that can attest this. A few posters have reiterated the same thing on this board many times before as well.

And more importantly, Taylor was quoted essentially saying the same thing. The story was re-posted on here not too long ago. So I think there's more substance to it than just lacking authenticity.
