I don't care what people say about Kelvin Sampson

People complain about the guys that have transfered under Capel, but not 1 is even close to the talent that has transferred under Sampson...why not talk about Lavender, Alexander, Humphrey, Mckenzie, etc...
That was one of the biggest criticisms of Sampson when he was here. So it was very much talked about.

The last few years of the Sampson era were very hard to endure. Not just because of the "phone calls." The final few years of Sampson was simply bad basketball.

However, he put together some damn good teams when he was here, and he didn't have Blake Griffin to carry those squads.

I don't care what any of you say. I want Gillespie if Capel doesn't work out. Screw it, I'll drink a few hundred beers with the guy while he leads us to the final damn four.

Really? OU was 25-8 in 2005 which was Sampson's second to last year. In 2006 they won 20 games and were 11-5 in the conference. In 2004 they won 20 games. In 2003 they won 27 games.

How were those years simply bad basketball? Caple has only won 10+ conference games one season. From 1998 to his final season, Sampson won 11 or more conference games all but one year with the sole exception being 2004. That was the year OU had a bunch of injuries. When Bookout was healthy, OU was winning that year and Sampson still managed to go .500 in conference play.

In what way, exactly?

His second-to-last season he lead OU to a Big 12 Regular Season Championship.

His team may have underachieved somewhat his last season, but they still had a good regular season and were rewarded with a 6 seed in the tournament.

Care to explain how those two seasons were considered to be "bad" basketball? Perhaps you're seeing something that I'm not.

Classic case of a kelvin basher and now he doesn't like capel. We could hire pitino or krzyzewski and still not be happy. This crowd are the ones who frustrate me the most. At least the capel lovers are firm in their support of capel and don't change with the wind.

Note... I'm talking about gooldoldsooner and not S4P

Whatever. Sampson's last few years were f'n horrible. Isolation basketball with average at best talent. It was like nails on a chalkboard.

I go by what I see. I know basketball more than you think. What I saw for KS's final few years were team's just getting by. Sloppy basketball. I'm not talking about seeds, or tourney appearances. I'm talking about the product on the court. The offense was awful. No real decent shooters other than Neal, and he was the definition of a streak shooter. It's ok to preach nothing but hard work and defense if you have talent coming in like a NC, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. He did well here when he had fire, but that fire burned out.

You say underachieved. EXACTLY! Sampson did well here, but it was time for him to go when he left. Not just because of the infractions, but because his final few teams were average at best, and OU is not an average school. Maybe he just got burned out at OU.

6 seed? Awesome. It's better than where we are now, but is that really what you want? Sampson fell off, and fell off hard and I'm glad he left, and I'll be glad when Capel is gone as well.

If we can get Gillispie, then by all means get the man in Norman. Everyone deserves a second chance, and OU hoops isn't really in a place where they can pick and choose top notch coaches. BG will turn this ship around.

I'm pulling for Capel. I don't think he'll succeed here after what I've seen, but I've supported him more than you think.

"Sampson's last few years"

You won't be happy with Gillespie either.

Not bad stats. Unfortunately, I was never confident in his final years when it came to getting out of the first or second round of the tourney.

If you're happy with that, then so be it. I just know that what I saw on the court was not so great basketball, and the conference wasn't all that great either.
