Is Kur a legitimate starter next year?

Kur is a legit starter right now ....
We’re better defensively and on the boards when he’s in right now....He’s a 6’9” or 6’10” athlete, a good rim protector, rebounder, and defender who’s offensive game is limited but improving ...teams can win with these type guys ...

He's a good athlete but he's totally lost on the basketball court. There's a reason he plays very limited minutes.

I'd like to see some clips of that. Some evidence that he is in the wrong places at the wrong times.

it's true. he is. I still say you play a zone or matchup and play him. but he is lost. you can see it in his face. he's learning.

Just watch him on defense. If he’s defending the pick and roll he invariably gets caught too far out hedging or in no-man’s-land and the other team either gets a dunk or an 8 footer or he has to foul someone to stop a layup. He needs time on the court, unfortunately probably during games, to become more instinctual about where to be or he’s just a liability because he’s not a guy you’re going to throw it to in the post and let him go get a bucket. Coolm is probably right, if they want to play him they need to go zone and just let him protect the rim.

He's still learning the game. He bungled a pair of breakaways in the second half Saturday. As the trailer, you've got to go to the center. Instead, he angled right in behind Reaves and was in no position to receive a pass on what should've been a dunk.

10-12 minutes a game. Block a shot or two. Anything more than that and I think we'll be in trouble.

It’s true, Kur is in the wrong place sometimes for one reason: Lon’s obsession with having our bigs hedge out twenty feet or more on defense. An experienced Manek can’t always recover, and a still green in some ways Kuath definitely can’t.

Kur gets lost fairly often trying to find his way to the right spot to guard the interior, but it’s not his fault. I think we all know he does his best work changing or blocking shots down low. So, why in the name of sanity is he told to hedge out so far from the basket on defense he can’t get back in time to guard anyone?

What am I missing here?

I'm usually slow to criticize the coaches; I figure (and rightfully so) they have forgotten more about the game than I'll ever know.

However, I have to agree with your assessment on the bigs hedging out so far from the basket. It just seems like it's a disaster waiting to happen, especially with Kur.

Other than switching screens incessantly, my biggest gripe with Lon's defense has always been the hedge up top. I don't like it, and I don't understand it. Now, I'm not Pete Newell, but I've been watching basketball all of my life and I've never had anyone adequately explain to me the reason for it.

Kelvin did it too, though. Maybe I should've called into his show back then and asked him.

about half the nba does it also

it is one of the about 5 ways to guard the pick and roll

Look at the back to back dunks by "Duke" from KU when he was in the game. He hedged way to far on the pick. The coaches don't want him to go that far. He will get better with time but it hasn't been fast.
