Officiating in the girls game is generally poor, but I have never felt it was all that biased. And as long as it is poor across the board for everyone, then the girls are still deciding the game. Thus, you don't hear me complain too much about officiating. HOWEVER:

The ISU game was decided by, as much as anything else, by a poor charging call. Hallie C. had both feet in the semi circle and was moving when she and Gioya made contact. So instead of an "and one", they made free throws and I believe this 5 point swing won them the game.

99 percent of bad calls are just a part of the process and officials should just learn from them. But, the Big 12 should disciple the refs for this one. it was an easy and blatant call, that went against the actions of the players, the rules, violated a bright line rule (the semi circle) and was completely inconsistent with the intent and emphasis the refs were supposed to be enforcing this year. And, it may have decided the game. Suspension or termination, depending upon their overall performance, should be meted out.

And yes I know, a lot of other things could have and did play a role in the game. For example, we could have turned the ball over less, made some free throws, not helped on dribble penetration and stayed on their 3 shooters etc. And Sherri should be harping on these things with the girls. But, the call just discussed probably changed the outcome of the game, should never have occurred, and should be addressed by the league.

While you are 100% correct, nothing is going to happen. The refs in college basketball, men or women, are not assigned to a specific conference. These officials travel all over the country and work games in all different conferences. Even if they did punish or reprimand the officials, we'd never know it.

I completely agree with the missed call changed the entire game. The would have been Hallie C's 5th foul and they would be playing the remainder of the game without her. Isn't she the one that was shooting most of their free throws at the end of the game. Not saying the others would have missed them but losing your best player sure does affect the way your team plays. Especially in your first close/tight game of the year.

That was a bad call although I have to admit when it happened I wasn't sure the defender was inside the arc until I saw it again on replay.

The block/charge rule was adjusted this year because they decided that too many charges were being called. Carter did start the play from outside "the box" and Christofferson didn't have both feet outside the arc so it certainly should have been a charge call. I think because of the adjustment to the block/charge rules, refs are going to have a more difficult time calling these fouls correctly a full speed, without the benefit of replay.

However, I don't think that call can be blamed for deciding the game. I don't think the refs favored either team in this game and there were some calls that were "iffy" on both sides. Christofferson's 4th foul was a questionable call, and it caused her to have to sit out which affected Iowa State and benefitted us. The charge on Carter was definitely the wrong call and we benefitted from the replay to prove this. However, I always find it difficult to blame one official miscall on the entire game. We had the home court advantage, and I don't think the referees favored either team in this one.

I agree that one call did not decide the game because as you pointed out there were questionable calls both ways. We also left Buckley open time and time again. Other than the football game against Oregon I don't think I've blamed the refs for costing us the game and we even had other opportunities to win that game. But, I still blame the refs. :)

Bad officiating can and does cost games. In this case, OU should have never been in the position to let the refs decide the game. As Norm said; letting Buckley have wide open 3s and letting her score 30x her average had more to do with the loss than a could of calls down the stretch.

I thought that each conference, including the Big XII had one or more officials who reviewed the accuracy of the calls and officials of each game. If so, they should be either eliminated or some EFFECTIVE grading system should be effected. In case of the women's game 50 lashes with barbed tips for stupid, obviously wrong calls. In fact not even a reprimand will be forthcoming.

I don't post much but in Defence of the Official because I am one myself.. As an Official we can not make every call or call every game perfectly. It is about being consistant on both ends of the floor. I am guilty of giving the home team a little favor. Is that right no but that is how "I" do it. Every Official will call the game differently base upon what "they" see we don't have instant replay to have a chance to get the call right if a mistake was made. I do understand that someone must be blamed. Bad coaching, missed free throws, missed lay ups, bad officials and ect. I have noticed that the winning team never say anything bad about the officials. smile The game should never have come down to a blown play call by the official because of the other missed opportunities during the game. IMO

Great post!

I have also noticed that biased fans are wrong more often than the officials. I think it's in our DNA to see what we want to see. :)

I (gasp) agree completely with Norm. It's the nature of the game (fast moving continuous action) that there will be wrong calls. However, there are a lot fewer of them than most fans think.

I don't believe Big 12 officials are worse than any other conference (they're the same officials, folks!). I also don't believe that officials for the women's game are that much worse than the men's. The poorest officiated game in recent memory was last year's men's finals.

I'll buy the every one makes mistakes position. Did you just say that you purposely make calls that favor the home team? If you are doing that, you should be run out of the business.

It doesn't matter if you are involved in pee wee or the NBA or anything in between. The kids, coaches, and fans from both teams deserve a fair shake from the officials.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. KNOWINGLY FAVORING ONE TEAM OVER ANOTHER IS AS BAD AS IT CAN GET!!!! :clap:clap:clap

As always there will be a few people that may go to the for right on what is posted. In my statement I was just useing that "favor" word just to show those that as always look for the most negitive things to comment on instead of just looking at the most important part and that is none of us are perfect Ref; Coach, Fan or otherwise.. I will never give an unfair advantage to the home team or any team.. I was just saying that in humor. But some of us take things so personnally....

Probably more incompetence than favoritism. The official on the base like should have seen it. If you can see the charge you should also be able to know that the defender was still moving and in the circle. It wasn't just he heel touching the circle.

Not a matter of taking things personally. It is a matter of saying what you mean and meaning what you say. If you were trying to be humorous speak in a humorous context rather than a serious one. Do so and there will be not misunderstanding.

To me when you declare you are "guilty of giving the home team a little favor" that to me you are speaking in a seriously vain tone. When you want reader to read between the lines without clarity you are inviting misunderstanding.
